Three Arrested For Allegedly Poisoning School Tanker Water To Get Muslim Principal Transferred
At least three people were arrested for allegedly poisoning a water tank of a school that left 11 students hospitalised. The incident took place in Belagavi district two weeks back. Sagar Patil, one of the arrested accused, is the president of the Sri Ram Sene's Savadatti taluk unit.
The incident happened at a government Kannada primary school in Hulikatti village after toxic chemicals were deliberately added to the school's drinking water, reported TOI.
Speaking about the incident, Belagavi Superintendent of Police Bhimashankar Guled told reporters that the accused had planned the act with the intention of targeting the school's headmaster, who is from the Muslim community.
The officials in the investigation found that the three accused, identified as Sagar Patil, Krishna Madar and Magangouda Patil, allegedly poisoned the tank as they believed that this would get the headmaster transferred. Meanwhile, the students who fell ill have been discharged from the hospital after being treated, reported TOI.
The accused have been sent to judicial custody. According to SP Bhimashankar Guled, Sagar Patil is believed to be the mastermind behind the plot. He reportedly pressured Krishna Madar into participating by threatening to expose his relationship with a girl from a different community.
'This act could have resulted in the massacre of innocent children. It is a terrifying reminder of how religious bigotry and communal hatred can manifest in such inhuman ways," the CM posted on X.
The CM took a swipe at the BJP and accused it of contributing to an atmosphere of religious division.
'Will Pramod Mutalik, BY Vijayendra, or R Ashok take responsibility for this? Leaders who support such anti-social elements must come forward and atone for their sins," he said.

After High Court jolt, Saif Ali Khan's family property dispute lands in top court
Seventy-five years after Independence, a six-decade-old battle over the private property of the last Nawab of Bhopal has now reached the Supreme Friday, a bench of Justices PS Narasimha and Atul S Chandurkar put on hold a recent Madhya Pradesh High Court order and issued notices to the descendants of the Nawab's two daughters. This includes actor Sharmila Tagore, her children Saif Ali Khan and Soha Ali Khan, as well as cousins from the Nawab's second daughter's dispute involves the estate of the late Nawab Haji Mohammad Hamidullah Khan, who died in 1962. The property, worth over Rs 15,000 crore, includes palaces, land, and THE DISPUTE BEGAN As far as the royal title was concerned, the Nawab's eldest daughter, Mehr Taj Sajida Sultan Begum, was declared heir to the 'throne' in 1960 under the rule of primogeniture—a law where the eldest child inherits the entire estate—and the Bhopal Accession in May this year, the Madhya Pradesh High Court ruled that this rule would not apply to the Nawab's private property. Instead, it said such property should be inherited under the personal law of the deceased. For Muslims, this means division according to Muslim personal law, which provides for distribution of property among children and High Court referred to a 2019 Supreme Court judgment that said the private property of former rulers must be inherited according to personal laws and not the rule of primogeniture. However, instead of dividing the property, it sent the case back to the trial court to DEVELOPMENTS IN TRIAL COURTIn 2000, the trial court had recognised Saif Ali Khan and his sisters—as descendants of Sajida Sultan—as legal heirs to the property. This was challenged in the High Court by other claimants, including descendants of the Nawab's brother and other family had argued that since they were heirs to the 'gaddi' (royal seat) through Sajida Sultan, they should also inherit all the private property. While the trial court accepted this view, the High Court overturned it 25 years later and ordered the trial court to hear the case BEFORE SUPREME COURT NOWThe Nawab's brother's family, represented by Omar Faruq Ali, has petitioned the Supreme Court. They say that once the High Court decided the property should be divided under Muslim personal law, it should have gone ahead and determined each heir's share instead of sending it back to the trial the brief hearing, senior advocate Devdatt Kamath and advocate Aadil Singh Boparai argued that the High Court's decision to restart the case was wrong, especially since neither side had asked for new evidence or a is a fresh civil suit involving the Nawab of Bhopal's estate. After 50 years, the appellate court remands it to the trial court, despite neither party seeking a remand or additional evidence. The court cites the SC judgment in Talat Fatima to justify a fresh trial and directs that evidence be recorded anew,' submitted also pointed out that the High Court had barred anyone from creating third-party rights—meaning Saif Ali Khan's family cannot sell, lease, or transfer the property until the partition issue is Supreme Court has given the respondents—including Sharmila Tagore, Saif, Soha, and other relatives—four weeks to reply. The case is likely to be heard in the second week of September.- EndsTrending Reel

Karnataka Education Policy Commission proposes sweeping education overhaul
Bengaluru, Aug 8 (PTI) The Karnataka State Education Policy Commission has called for a sweeping overhaul of the state's education system, proposing structural reforms from pre-primary to professional courses, tighter regulation of private institutions, and a substantial increase in government spending on education. The Commission's chairperson Prof Sukhadeo Thorat on Friday submitted his final report in three volumes to Chief Minister Siddaramaiah in the presence of his cabinet colleagues and senior government officers, sources in the office of Higher Education Minister M C Sudhakar said. The 17-member Commission, which also comprises six subject experts, advisors, and one member-secretary, was formed to formulate an education policy. According to a note issued by Sudhakar's office, the panel has proposed adoption of a 2+8+4 system in school education — two years of pre-primary, eight years of primary, and four years of secondary education — coupled with a firm emphasis on Kannada or the mother tongue as the medium of instruction up to class five in all board schools. In its report, the commission recommended that school education be complemented by a bilingual policy pairing Kannada or the mother tongue with English, ensuring children are rooted in their linguistic heritage while gaining access to global language skills. It has also called for residential schools for children from migrant families, a gradual extension of the Right to Education Act to cover those aged between four and eighteen, and the universalisation of secondary education across Karnataka. To enhance the educational quality, it proposed ending the state's dependence on National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) textbooks in favour of locally developed content, boosting government school standards to the level of Kendriya Vidyalayas, and stopping the appointment of guest or contract teachers. Privatisation, it said, must be checked through a dedicated regulator for private schools, while block education offices should be empowered to make academic decisions. Agencies working in parallel should be merged into an integrated commissionerate, the Department of State Educational Research and Training (DSERT) should be transformed into an autonomous State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT) with a focus on research and development, and the Directorate of Lifelong Learning revitalised. It also called for raising education's share in the state budget to 30 per cent, ensuring per-student spending grows by five to ten per cent each year. In higher education, the Commission wanted a comprehensive financing framework that guarantees timely and adequate funding, with expenditure on higher education gradually increased to one per cent of Karnataka's GSDP by 2034-35. Further, it recommended raising the share of higher education in the overall education budget between 25 and 30 per cent, and earmarking at least a quarter of this increased funding for infrastructure. For academic structure, it proposed a 3+2 model for undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in general education, a 4+2 model for professional courses, and the continuation of the pre-NEP 2020 re-entry policy. The report sought to keep fees in government and aided institutions within reach, regulate private institutions through a permanent mechanism, and extend full fee waivers and scholarships to girls in government, aided, and unaided private colleges. It urged reservation compliance in private unaided institutions, creation of a State Quality Assessment Board, and the filling of all sanctioned teaching posts within five years. The commission advocated for the introduction of short-term diploma and certificate programmes, government-funded internships, and region-specific skill councils led by industry leaders. Emerging technologies such as quantum computing, artificial intelligence, machine learning, data science, life sciences, and nanoscience should be embedded in engineering and polytechnic curricula. Agriculture studies, according to the panel, should begin at school-level and continue into higher education, with opportunities for dual or joint degrees, international internships, and public-private partnerships with foreign universities.
