China's Xi, Pakistan's Dar pledge unity as SCO faces regional strains
The interaction took place on the sidelines of the SCO Council of Foreign Ministers (CFM) meeting, a key diplomatic gathering aimed at preparing the groundwork for the upcoming SCO Leaders' Summit later this year. The CFM convened to review progress on multilateral cooperation and set the agenda for endorsement by heads of state.
'Delighted to meet earlier today with President Xi Jinping at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing,' Dar said in a post on social media platform X. 'Conveyed the warm greetings of the leadership, government and people of Pakistan. As iron-clad brothers and All-Weather Strategic Cooperative Partners, we remain committed to deepening Pak-China enduring friendship and advancing shared regional goals.'
Islamabad and Beijing are long-time allies and have been jointly working on multibillion-dollar infrastructure, energy and connectivity initiatives under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), a flagship project of China's Belt and Road Initiative. The corridor provides China direct access to the Arabian Sea through Pakistan's Gwadar port, while enabling Pakistan to modernize its infrastructure and strengthen regional trade links.
The foreign office of Pakistan said in a statement released earlier today that President Xi emphasized the importance of regional cooperation under the SCO framework, an organization spanning the Eurasian landmass and representing a significant portion of the global population.
Also present at the conference was India's External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar.
The CFM conference comes nearly two months after a tense four-day military standoff between Pakistan and India, during which both sides exchanged missiles, drones and artillery fire before agreeing to a US-brokered ceasefire.

PM announces Rs4 billion for mapping, rebuilding flood-hit infrastructure in Gilgit-Baltistan
ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Monday announced Rs4 billion ($14 million) funds for mapping and rebuilding flood-hit infrastructure in the northern Gilgit-Baltistan (GB) region. At least 10 people have died and five others have sustained injuries in the region in rain- and flood-related incidents in GB, according to the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA). Several people, including tourists, remain missing after deadly flash floods. The region, home to thousands of glaciers and five out of 14 world peaks above the height of 8,000 meters, has suffered the highest infrastructure losses, with 347 houses destroyed and 196 partially damaged, and several roads and bridges damaged and blocked by raging floodwaters over the last few weeks. Sharif arrived in Gilgit city on Monday to review the flood situation in the region and presided over a meeting, attended by senior officials and ministers of the regional and central governments, to take stock of the damages during the monsoon season. 'Today, I stand before you, alongside members of my cabinet, to express our heartfelt solidarity with the people of Gilgit-Baltistan. I assure you, God willing, that I will remain present with you until you are fully settled in your homes once again,' he told affected people at a ceremony to distribute compensation cheques, urging regional and federal authorities to work relentlessly to prepare against climate disasters. 'I will return at the end of August, God willing, during which [NDMA chief] Inam Haider is tasked to conduct full mapping of the losses, estimate damages, and report back. I expect contributions from both federal and Gilgit-Baltistan governments. Today, I announce a fund of 4 billion rupees for this purpose.' Pakistan ranks among the most climate-vulnerable countries despite contributing less than one percent of global greenhouse gas emissions. The country has witnessed increasingly erratic weather events in recent years, including record-breaking rains, floods, heatwaves, droughts and severe storms. Sharif said his government was responsible for installing advanced warning systems across the region, acknowledging that though development programs had been ongoing in the region on paper for seven years, 'little real work has been done, whether by the federal or provincial governments.' 'Over these seven years, negligible progress occurred,' he said. 'I emphasize that the timeline set must be adhered to strictly — not even an hour of delay is acceptable.' The prime minister announced Rs1 million for the deceased individuals, Rs400,000 for severely injured persons, Rs300,000 for the injured, Rs600,000 for those whose houses were destroyed and Rs400,000 for the one with partial damages to their homes. 'Those with business losses, shops, or small enterprises will receive tiered compensation accordingly,' he announced, tasking members of his cabinet with overseeing road repairs, water and power projects. 'I previously announced a 100 MW solar power project through the national solar energy program. I expect that by next summer, especially in the harsh winter months when you face acute power shortages, this project will significantly alleviate them,' Sharif told the attendees. The PM's visit came hours after the Pakistan Meteorological Department warned of more rains in the country, saying monsoon currents penetrating Pakistan were expected to intensify from Aug. 4. It said heavy rains may generate flash floods in local nullahs/streams of Chitral, Dir, Swat, Shangla, Mansehra, Kohistan, Abbottabad, Buner, Charsadda, Nowshera, Swabi, Mardan, Murree, Galliyat, Islamabad, Rawalpindi, northeast Punjab and Azad Kashmir from Aug. 5 to Aug. 7. 'Landslides/mudslides may cause roads' closure in the vulnerable hilly areas of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan, Murree, Galliyat and Kashmir during the forecast period,' the PMD said. In May, at least 32 people were killed in severe storms, while a third of Pakistan was submerged by devastating floods in 2022 that killed more than 1,700 people, affected over 30 million and caused an estimated $35 billion in damages.

Pakistan condemns ‘storming' of Al-Aqsa Mosque by Ben Gvir
ISLAMABAD: Pakistan's Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif condemned the recent 'storming' of Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem by Israel's far-right National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir on Monday, saying that such actions were a violation of international law and imperil the prospects for peace in the Middle East. Ben Gvir visited the mosque compound on Sunday, flanked by police officials, and said he prayed there, challenging rules covering one of the most sacred sites in Islam. The compound has been managed by a Jordanian Islamic trust called the Waqf since 1967, following the Six-Day War. Under this long-standing and sensitive arrangement, Jews are allowed to visit the site but are not permitted to pray there. The move drew condemnations from Arab countries such as Saudi Arabia and Jordan, who both opposed Ben Gvir's visit by saying that it was a violation of international law and could lead to a surge in tensions. 'Pakistan unequivocally condemns the recent act of storming of ... Pakistan's National Disaster Management Authority said it would dispatch 100 tons of humanitarian aid supplies for Gaza on Monday. The authority said a dedicated relief flight carrying 65 tons of canned food, 20 tons of dry and infant milk, 5 tons of biscuits and 10 tons of medicines will depart from Islamabad as part of Pakistan's continued support for the Palestinian people in their time of dire need. 'The consignment, organized under the patronage of the Government of Pakistan and led by NDMA, is part of a broader 200-ton humanitarian relief operation being executed through two chartered flights,' the authority said on Sunday. Speaking to media on Sunday, Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar said Pakistan's total humanitarian aid dispatched to Gaza has now reached 17 consignments, amounting to 1,715 tons. Israel has killed more than 60,400 Palestinians since the war on Gaza began Oct. 7, 2023, according to Gaza's Health Ministry.

US President Donald Trump said on Monday he will substantially raise tariffs on India over its purchases of Russian oil. 'India is not only buying massive amounts of Russian Oil, they are then, for much of the Oil purchased, selling it on the Open Market for big profits. They don't care how many people in Ukraine are being killed by the Russian War Machine,' Trump said in a post on Truth Social. 'Because of this, I will be substantially raising the Tariff paid by India to the USA.'
