Matthew Perry's Friends co-star reveals signs addiction was going 'downhill' on set
Friends star Morgan Fairchild has opened up about working with the late Matthew Perry as he fought addiction, revealing the signs she could tell that he was going "downhill". Morgan, 75, played the role of Matthew's on-screen mother Nora Bing on the hit sitcom Friends, which catapulted Matthew to fame as Chandler Bing.
After battling addiction to alcohol and drugs for many years, Matthew died last October aged 54. He drowned in the spa bath at his Los Angeles after taking ketamine.
Speaking on ITV's Loose Women today, Morgan spoke about working with Matthew on Friends - and the signs that she could tell he had succumbed to addiction. "He was such a joyful, happy person. He was like a fun kid on the set," she said.
"I remember him being a bouncy, fun guy, I was not aware of that early on," she said of his addiction. "Later as things went downhill, I read that he crashed his car into a home or something and I thought, 'Uh oh, this is not going in a good direction.' But because I wasn't there all the time, I didn't really see it."
Morgan added that she noticed certain signs when Matthew was battling with addiction on set. "As it slowly went downhill, I heard about it and then was seeing it a bit on the set. Not in his work - he was always on time for me, always knew his lines, he was always great to work with.
"But he became a bit more reclusive, you wouldn't see him between scenes as much, he would be in his dressing room. Things like that."
Morgan went on to add that she reached out to Matthew in the midst of his addiction as she had experience with friends and family who were addicts. "It's awkward on a set, you're working with people you don't want to be intrusive and people going through those problems, you want to be a support and not irritating them," she said. "You don't want to be a downer for them.
"I wanted to let him know that I was there for him anytime - anytime you want to call, if you want to go to a meeting and you're afraid to go to a meeting, I'll go with you.
"He never called unfortunately but I tried to let him know that he had support and somebody who cared aside from his family and the other friends."
Morgan Fairchild contributes to ITV's upcoming documentary Matthew Perry: A Hollywood Tragedy, sharing her experiences with the Friends star.

Final straw that drove Peter Andre to post bombshell statement about Katie Price – and heartbreaking reason behind it
Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) PETER Andre has finally defended himself after being under fire from Katie Price for 16 years. They've been devoted parents to kids Junior, 20, and Princess, 18, since their split in 2009 but Katie has taken every opportunity to slam her ex. 5 Katie wanted to hash things out once and for all with Peter Credit: Splash 5 Katie held out an olive branch but it was rebuffed Credit: Getty 5 Princess stars in a new reality show The Princess Diaries - but it has been overshadowed by her parents' war Credit: ITV 5 Katie said she's feeling left out of certain parts of her children's life Credit: princess_andre/Instagram Peter finally snapped in a blistering statement on Thursday, following Katie's latest claims that their kids live with both Pete and her. In the same podcast, she said she had been frozen out of her daughter Princess's blossoming career, which includes glam photoshoots, brand deals, and a new ITV reality show titled The Princess Diaries. Last night, Pete directly addressed her claims and sources tell The Sun he was pushed to the brink. One said: "Pete had to speak out now because things had just become unbearable. "Katie lies and lies about Pete, she talks about him and tells lies about the kids all the time and he was sick of it. "The fact is, she went on her podcast and said that Princess lived with her and that's just not true. "It's been a really difficult and upsetting time for the family - she's goading him and constantly speaking about him and none of it is true." Sources also noted how Katie booked herself into more face surgery in Turkey on the weekend that Princess's ITV show launched. Previously, Katie flew to Ibiza and partied with celebs like Wayne Lineker, Dean Gaffney and Jamie O'Hara, at the same time Princess was making her debut on the Spanish island in a catwalk show. The source said: "It's almost like Katie wanted to overshadow Princess's show and insert herself into the narrative - normally, you'd think a parent would step back and let their child enjoy their moment in the spotlight but Katie couldn't do that. Princess Andre breaks silence on Peter and Katie's bitter feud after his blistering statement "One minute she's admitting she wanted to film with Princess in Ibiza, then this week she's saying on her podcast she doesn't need to be in the show." Peter and Katie are doubtless proud of their children's impressive achievements. They have been thrust into the spotlight, thanks to their mum and dad being two of the UK's most well known celebrities. They've capitalised on that schooling, rightly so, with Junior releasing a No1 single and Princess signing a huge beauty deal and launching her own brand. The source continued: "This should have been a really exciting time for the family, instead it's overshadowed by Katie's rants. "It really affects everyone - it's hard for Princess as she loves her mum, but it's just drama and negativity at every turn." Over the past year Peter has also been accused by Katie's fans of being "cruel" and "emotional manipulation" during his marriage to Katie. TikToks have been doing the rounds showing carefully edited clips from Katie and Peter's reality shows. Moments show them snapping at each other, but with Pete coming off worse. It hasn't gone unnoticed by Pete who has found that the clips hatefully exclude any context. Peter Andre's statement in full Peter hit back after Katie's claims on her recent podcast that she was being frozen out of Princess's career - despite Princess living with her. Peter wrote on Instagram: "For sixteen years I have stayed silent in the face of repeated lies from my ex-wife and her family, out of respect for my children and loved ones, but staying silence has been incredibly frustrating. "That ends today. "The latest comments about my children's welfare and living arrangements compel me to set the record straight. "For well-documented reasons, and for their safety, Junior and Princess came into my care in 2018 and remained with me until they reached adulthood. "In 2019, the family courts issued a legally binding order to enforce this arrangement. I have never made this public before out of respect for my children." "In 2011 and 2015, publicly documented court cases found my ex wife had made false claims. She was ordered to pay substantial damages and legal costs, and to apologise, to me and my management. "The same falsehoods are being repeated today." "Unfortunately, there are many more lies and baseless accusations that I have yet to address. Those will be dealt with in the coming months." His statement came just hours after Katie claimed that Princess was living with her on her latest podcast. She said: "I've missed out so much with Princess. I haven't watched the show, but, people have told me how proud I should be of the kids and how they Princess does talk highly of me all the way through it so although I'm not in the show she speaks about me all the time which is really sweet. "But why wouldn't she, because she lives with me. And this is another thing I need to clear up, the kids have never lived just with Pete, we've shared the kids." A source continued: "People online are making heavily edited TikToks using clips from the old reality shows where they take out Katie's audio so it looks like Pete is being cruel to her. "If you watch the original show, certain lines have been taken out. "Things like that where Pete is made to look bad really upset him." They continued: "Pete would like nothing more than for Katie to never ever speak about him in public ever again but she won't stop. "He's kept a dignified silence for so long, but I wouldn't be surprised if it turns legal as she's gone too far now. He just wants a harmonious life for his family." A rep for Peter tells The Sun: "Peter has issued his statement as he is not prepared for this to go on any longer and it's affecting his family." Have YOU got a story or an amazing picture or video? My man said his ex's name during our wedding vows in ‘Ross from Friends' moment…he was mortified but I still said ‘I do'
Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) A MORTIFIED groom left his wedding guests covering their faces in embarrassment during his vows when he accidentally said his ex's name to his now wife. Andrew Fildes, 51, and Rebecca Fildes, 46, got married in a registry office in Bedfordshire in October 2023 after being together for six years. A 'surprised' Rebecca, who shares a middle name with his former partner, quickly corrected him because he didn't even realise his mistake. Luckily the mum-of-three 'just laughed it off' and didn't let it ruin the big day. Taking to TikTok, Rebecca shared video footage of the blunder captioned 'when your new husband calls you his ex-girlfriend's name', which has now gone viral with more than 37,800 views. The clip shows the couple holding hands as the groom says 'I take you, Sarah' - before the bride erupts into laughter. Amused users found the clip hilarious and took to the comments with many comparing the situation to a 'Ross and Rachel moment' from the US sitcom, Friends. In the infamous episode, Ross accidentally says 'Rachel' instead of 'Emily' during his vows leading his new wife to flee. However, other users branded the groom's mistake a 'big red flag'. Despite the awkward mistake, the pair still say it was the 'best day of their lives'. Andrew, a property manager who lives in Harlington, Bedfordshire, said: "It's the worst nightmare saying my ex's name but to be fair it's Rebecca's second name so I got her name all jumbled up when I was talking. I'm horrified by what an Etsy seller did to my beautiful wedding bouquet - people agree it looks 'awful & tacky' "I was bricking it and I was standing in front of friends and family trying not to say the wrong words. I was just shaking and sweating so I was just trying to get through the ceremony really as I don't like standing up in front of people. "I wasn't even aware of it when I said it. Rebecca just looked at me and I thought 'what have I said wrong' and she corrected me. It wasn't ideal for him to say his ex's name. Thankfully I saw the funny side in it and we're still married Rebecca Fildes "My brother put his hand on his face and my son shook his head and I thought 'I've clearly got something wrong'. "It's just one of those things but it's quite a common name. Although it's my ex, we've been separated for 10 years.' He then added: "I was glad she saw the funny side. She loves to take the p*** out of me for it and it comes up quite regularly. I don't take it too seriously but it's still embarrassing. Average cost of a wedding in 2025 Recent research by Hodge reveals the dream of getting married can come with a hefty price tag, reaching more than £20,000. Food - £6,000 Honeymoon - £4,329 Wedding outfits - £3,500 Entertainment - £2,000 Engagement ring - £1,948 Flowers - £1,110 Wedding ring - £1,000 Wedding transport - £700 Total = £20,587 "It's a real-life Ross and Rachel moment. It's a bit frustrating because we talked about that beforehand as a joke because we're both Friends fans. It was still the best day of my life." Rebecca, a dog walker who lives in Harlington, Bedfordshire, explained: "I was surprised he said it. It wasn't ideal for him to say his ex's name. Thankfully I saw the funny side in it and we're still married. "I just think because he was so nervous he picked up on the Sarah bit [of my name]. My brother put his hand on his face and my son shook his head and I thought 'I've clearly got something wrong' Andrew Fildes "It was a stand-out memory but I'm not sure it's a stand-out memory you particularly want. "We've got the kind of relationship where I don't think he did that for any reason other than just making a mistake. "I just laughed it off and we still laugh about it. I keep saying he owes me a proper wedding now where he gets my name right." Big divide Social media users eagerly shared their amusement at the awkward blunder, as one user said: "Ross and Rachel moment." Another asked: "Ross Geller is that you?" Whilst a third user commented: "I'd be bringing this up for the next 50 years." I would cancel the wedding, that's a big red flag TikTok user But at the same time, other users harshly criticised the groom for his mistake. One user said: "That's awful. I would have been so upset." A second chimed in: "I would have walked out." Whilst someone else penned: "I would cancel the wedding, that's a big red flag."
