Martial Arts Training and Research Centre inaugurated in Nagercoil

The Hindu05-05-2025
Tamil Nadu Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin on Monday inaugurated the Traditional Martial Arts Training and Research Centre at Anna Stadium in Nagercoil through video conferencing.
Following the inauguration, Minister of Milk and Dairy Development Mano Thangaraj and Kanniyakumari Collector R. Alagumeena visited the centre.
Speaking on the occasion, Ms. Alagumeena said that martial arts played a vital role in developing mental strength and self-confidence among individuals. Also, martial arts contributed in naturally enhancing immunity and protecting the human body from various illnesses.
Highlighting the district's strength in the field of martial arts, she said Kanniyakumari was home to some of the best martial arts trainers and players. The centre would play a key role in promoting traditional martial arts, which had significant value in Tamil literature and history, by passing them on to the next generation.
A total of 40 students comprising 20 boys and 20 girls had been selected for training at the centre. Two trainers had been appointed, each receiving a monthly honorarium of ₹25,000.
The Collector also expressed hope that the initiative would help sustain the martial arts culture and future generations to embrace it.

Sanju Samson's Options For Next IPL Team: CSK, KKR Or A Wildcard Choice?

The IPL season is quite far away still and we haven't even heard about the next dates for the auction. However, the tournament is already a hot topic because of the trade window and what it might mean for the future of one of the best players in the league, Sanju Samson. (X/IPL) What is the trade window? Between a month after the IPL season ends and the week before the next one starts, the 10 franchises are allowed to exchange their retained players for either a) money or b) other players. (Picture Credit: Sportzpics) Samson is the hot topic of the summer because he has reportedly told the Rajasthan Royals, his long-term franchise, that he wants to leave before the auction. It's being reported that the two parties have some differences. (Picture Credit: AP) The biggest option available to Samson seems to be Chennai Super Kings. According to some reports, it is also his preference. (Picture Credit: AP) CSK would be a great opportunity for him because MS Dhoni is close to retiring and they'll need a frontline wicketkeeper, someone who knows Tamil, is from the neighboring state, brings captaincy experience and is in the prime of his career. (BCCI Photo) Another choice being cited in the media are Kolkata Knight Riders. KKR have been in need of a dependable wicketkeeper batter for ages and their team would likely go under a shuffle after a big failure under Ajinkya Rahane's captaincy. At KKR, he'll likely call the shots as the captain and as someone who had a brief stint at the team in his early years, he'll get as much love as Shreyas Iyer did. (Picture Credit: Sportzpics) But there are also a couple of wildcard choices: Mumbai Indians are also staring at the retirement of Rohit Sharma in the next few years and will need an opener. A wicketkeeper with a lot of fan-following will fit the bill. (BCCI Photo) Another possible choice could be Sunrisers Hyderabad. The franchise like shuffling players around everywhere and their top-order 'keeper option Ishan Kishan, signed for Rs. 11.25 crore, didn't perform per expectations in 2025. Releasing him could get them the money needed and Samson will fit their style like a glove. (AP Photo)

Not Only Rishabh Pant! Another India Batter Batted With Finger Fracture Vs England

Last Updated: Karun Nair, it has been revealed, was dealing with a finger fracture in the final Test of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy but continued batting. As is always the case with famous Test series away from home, India's 2-2 against England was sprinkled with many brilliant stories of individual valor and team brilliance. One such story has emerged about Karun Nair, the middle-order batter who made a comeback after eight years for the country. According to a report in The Times of India, Nair fractured his finger while batting in the second innings of the fifth Test at the Oval. He still continued batting for the team and though his returns weren't game-defining, he survived a total of 32 balls to score 17 runs with three boundaries. From next season onwards, he'd be up for selection in the South Zone as he has moved allegiances from Vidarbha to Karnataka, his home state, which he left a few years ago. Karun Nair's career hangs in balance It was a Bollywood-esque story of a comeback for Nair, who admitted to being completely broken after getting dropped in 2017. However, he scored only 205 runs, including one half-century in the first innings at the Oval. Questions were raised about his ability to be India's long-term number three. 'His feet don't move enough to be successful at No. 3. In that case, the options become limited and when it's a choice for Nos. 6 or 7, there are too many options. It's not just Shreyas (Iyer) and Sarfaraz (Khan). Even Axar Patel or Nitish Reddy can come into the picture depending on the nature of the pitches India are playing on," Deep Dasgupta told TOI. Sai Sudharsan is breathing down Nair's throat at number three. The Tamil batter didn't put up huge scores either, but looked better technically. Nair would hope that the team decides to give him another chance at home to showcase his potential. The next Test series is a two-match one against the West Indies from October 2. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
