CSK's struggles in IPL 2025: Batting or bowling woes? What's holding them back?
People change, strategies evolve, and CSK's tried-and-tested formula isn't yielding the desired results this time.
CSK's chances of making it to the playoffs are extremely slim, and a defeat to Punjab Kings in Chennai will officially result in their early elimination from the tournament.
The big question: What's going wrong for CSK? Is it the batting or the bowling? Let's analyse.
CSK's run rate of 8.1 is by far the worst among the 10 teams this season. KKR are the second-worst, with a run rate of 9.0. While KKR are still averaging 180 runs per innings, CSK are managing only 162.
Despite poor overall numbers, there are instances of teams performing well in one of the three phases—powerplay, middle overs, or death overs. But CSK's case is entirely different. They are the worst batting side overall and have the lowest run rate in each of the three phases.
Phase Run rate Rank Powerplay: Overs 1 to 6 7.9 10th Middle overs: Overs 7 to 16 7.4 10th Death overs: Overs 17 to 20 10.1 10th
CSK's powerplay run rate in IPL 2010 was 7.9, the same rate they are maintaining in IPL 2025. However, while they were ranked 4th in IPL 2010, they currently sit at 10th out of 10 teams in 2025. What's more alarming is that Rajasthan Royals' teenage sensation, Vaibhav Suryavanshi, has hit more sixes in the powerplay in just three matches than the entire CSK batting lineup has managed in ten.
In IPL 2025, 70 batters have faced more than 50 balls, and five of the bottom 15 players with the worst batting strike rates belong to CSK. No other team has more than two players in the worst 15 list.
Batter Balls Runs Strike Rate Rahul Tripathi 57 55 96.49 Ravindra Jadeja 132 166 125.75 Devon Conway 74 94 127.02 Rachin Ravindra 149 191 128.18 Vijay Shankar 91 118 129.67
Except for Ravindra Jadeja, no other CSK players featured in the previous match. In their opening game against the Mumbai Indians, CSK were at 96/3 at the end of the 10th over, chasing 156. The batters then took 55 balls to score the remaining 60 runs, a warning sign that went unnoticed by the management. This was followed by a series of damaging defeats. Biggest defeat while chasing in Chennai - Lost by 50 runs to RCB Lowest total in Chennai - 103/9 vs KKR Losing all 10 wickets for the first time in 6 years in Chennai - 154 vs SRH The only team without a 200+ total while batting first in IPL 2025
CSK have bowled first on six occasions, conceding above 200 only once. They have allowed scores of 155/9, 196/7, 182/9, 183/6, 219/6, and 166/7, winning just two of those matches, 156 vs MI and 167 vs LSG. In the three games where they batted first, CSK set targets of 104, 177 (in Mumbai), and 155, but their bowlers struggled to defend these totals. Noor Ahmad and Khaleel Ahmed have been the standout performers, while the rest of the bowlers haven't made much impact.
Player Matches Wickets Economy Noor Ahmad 9 14 8.0 Khaleel Ahmed 9 12 9.0 Matheesha Pathirana 7 7 10.3 Ravindra Jadeja 9 6 8.2 Ravichandran Ashwin 7 5 9.3 Anshul Kamboj e 3 6.9
Pathirana's dip in accuracy, coupled with the lack of wickets from the famed spin twins Jadeja and Ashwin, has resulted in CSK conceding above-par totals on several occasions.
Chennai Super Kings have used 21 players in IPL 2025, the highest among all teams, and have fielded the same lineup in consecutive matches only once.
CSK is attempting a course correction midway through the season. The five-time champions fielded five players under the age of 23 against Sunrisers Hyderabad, marking the first-ever occurrence in their history. The first four players bought in the mega auction, Devon Conway, Rahul Tripathi, Ravichandran Ashwin, and Rachin Ravindra, did not start against Sunrisers Hyderabad.

Ex-India Star Joins R Ashwin, Gives 'Big' Take On Shreyas Iyer's Asia Cup Snub
Former India captain Mohammad Azharuddin has expressed his disbelief over the 'surprise' exclusion of batter Shreyas Iyer from the Asia Cup 2025 squad. Iyer's omission from the 15-member contingent, as well as the five-man reserves, has sparked a huge debate in the fraternity. Former India all-rounder Ravichandran Ashwin was one of the first ex-cricketers to have called out BCCI on Iyer's exclusion, calling the decision "sad" and "unfair". Similarly, Azharuddin, too, was surprised not to see Iyer's name on the list. Taking to social media platform X, Azharudding wrote: "Shreyas Iyer left out of the squad. Big surprise" Shreyas Iyer left out of the squad. Big surprise. #AsiaCup2025 @ShreyasIyer15 — Mohammed Azharuddin (@azharflicks) August 19, 2025 Speaking on his omission, chief selector Ajit Agarkar said, "With regards to Shreyas, you'll have to tell who he can replace. It is again, no fault of his, nor is it ours. It's just that at the moment, you can just pick 15. He's got to wait for his chance." Shreyas was India's highest run-getter and overall second-highest run-getter in CT 2025, with 243 runs in five matches at an average of 48.60, with two fifties and a best score of 79. He concluded his run in IPL 2025 as the sixth-highest run-getter, after garnering 604 runs in 17 matches and innings at an average of 50.33, at a strike rate of 175.07 and six fifties. His best score was 97*. Despite being overlooked for the shortest format, Iyer is set to be handed a major responsibility by the BCCI. According to sources, Iyer is leading the race to become India's next ODI captain. The selectors see Iyer as a long-term replacement for Rohit Sharma, as far as captaincy in concerned. The decision on India's ODI team could come as soon as after the Asia Cup, which is scheduled to be played from September 9-28 in the UAE. In addition, Test skipper Shubman Gill might also replace Suryakumar Yadav as full-time captain of the T20I team.

Ex-India Star Accuses Agarkar-Gambhir Of Bias Against Shreyas Iyer: 'Not Even...'
Last Updated: Subramaniam Badrinath alleges Ajit Agarkar's selection committee snubbed Shreyas Iyer for the 2025 Asia Cup due to a 'likeability factor'. Former Indian cricketer Subramaniam Badrinath has alleged that there was a 'likeability factor' in the Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee's decision to exclude Shreyas Iyer from the 2025 Asia Cup squad. Badrinath said Agarkar's calling Shreyas 'unlucky' was taking a 'convenient route' to explain the big change. Shreyas took Punjab Kings to the final of IPL 2025 earlier this year, while also scoring 604 runs with a 175-plus strike rate. However, Agarkar said, they couldn't find anyone in the first 15 to make way for the Mumbaikar, and it was neither the selector's fault nor the batter's. 'He definitely deserved to get selected. Ajit Agarkar said he was unlucky but that's just a convenient route. Iyer has produced excellent numbers over the last two years and done brilliantly as a captain as well. Instead, they picked Shivam Dube and Rinku Singh for the No. 5 position. In the last one year, both have done virtually nothing, with poor numbers," Badrinath said in a video on his YouTube channel. 'This is not even a 50-50 decision. Shreyas Iyer should have definitely got a look-in. One can say he has batted at No. 3 for his IPL side. But he can easily play at No. 5 for India being an excellent player of spin and a great finisher," he said. 'Especially now, without Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, his (Shreyas) experience and leadership is much needed in the team. More than unlucky, this feels like a likeability factor playing a role in selection," he added. Badrinath is not the first to suggest some ulterior motive behind Shreyas's snub. Former India assistant coach and part of the backroom staff when Shreyas led Kolkata Knight Riders to the IPL 2024 title, Abhishek Nayar, also said that it seemed to him that the batter wasn't as liked as others in the squad. Neither has indicated who the favored one is that took Shreyas' place. The only other major change in the team from the last time it played was Shubman Gill coming in as a third opener (instead of Yashasvi Jaiswal) and being appointed the vice-captain. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Shreyas Iyer should get clear communication: Ajinkya Rahane after Asia Cup snub
Veteran India batter Ajinkya Rahane has weighed in on the exclusion of his state teammate Shreyas Iyer from India's squad for the 2025 Asia Cup. Rahane, who has shared the Mumbai dressing room with Iyer for years, acknowledged that the batter has every right to feel disappointed but also understands the management's dilemma in picking only 15 T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav and chief selector Ajit Agarkar announced the squad for the Asia Cup starting September 9. Despite scoring 604 runs in IPL 2025 at an average of 50.33 and a strike rate of 175.07, Iyer missed out on both the main squad and the standby list. Rahane admitted it was a tough call but stressed the need for better communication with sure he (Shreyas Iyer) must be really disappointed considering the kind of IPL he had. It was a fantastic season. Even in domestic cricket, especially in the 50-over format, he has performed really well whenever given opportunities. I can completely understand the team management's point of view, since they can only pick 15 players and need to see the balance of the team,' Rahane said on his YouTube channel. Chief selector Agarkar also addressed the exclusion when asked about it at the press conference. 'In terms of Shreyas, it's again unfortunate. You tell me who he can replace in this squad. It's not his fault, nor ours, it's just that only 15 can be picked, and at the moment, he has to wait for his chances,' Agarkar however, emphasized the importance of transparency between selectors and Iyer regarding his future in the T20 setup.'The only thing I want to see and I want to know is that a proper communication from selectors and team management with Shreyas. He's an important member of the team and I'm sure in the coming years or in the future he's going to be part of the T20 format as well. So communication is the key from the selectors to Shreyas Iyer,' he add context, the selectors included Dhruv Jurel as a reserve wicketkeeper despite having Sanju Samson in the main squad. Some feel Iyer could have taken that reserve slot instead, highlighting the fine margins in selection decisions.- Ends
