Porsche battery unit to cut most staff amid Europe's EV slowdown
About 200 people would be let go at the Cellforce Group subsidiary, IG Metall spokesman Kai Lamparter said, out of 286 employees in total.
'The authorities have been officially notified,' Lamparter said. 'It can be assumed that people will be given their notices on Monday.'
Cellforce did not respond to AFP's request for comment and a Porsche spokeswoman said that she would not comment on reports of layoffs.
Batteries, usually the single most expensive part of an electric car, have become a key battleground for carmakers and the wider automotive sector.
But European firms have struggled to gain a foothold in the face of Chinese battery behemoths like CATL and BYD, fuelling fears for the long-term future of the continent's car industry.
Sweden's Northvolt, Europe's highest-profile battery maker, filed for bankruptcy in March and most of its assets are now being acquired by US rival Lyten.
Porsche said in April that it would abandon plans to ramp up battery-production at Cellforce, citing slower than expected demand for electric vehicles.
The Stuttgart-based sports car maker itself announced 1,900 job cuts in February before warning employees in July that its business model 'no longer works in its current form' amid fierce competition in key market China. — AFP

Bournemouth snap up Morocco winger Amine Adli from Leverkusen on £25m deal
LONDON, Aug 21 — Bournemouth have signed Morocco winger Amine Adli on a five-year contract from German side Bayer Leverkusen, the Premier League club said on Thursday as they continue their recruitment drive after losing several key players. Financial details were not disclosed, but British media reported that the 25-year-old France-born Morocco international was signed for a fee of around £25 million (RM142 million). Adli joins Ben Gannon-Doak, Adrien Truffert, Dorde Petrovic and Bafode Diakite as new additions at Bournemouth. The club lost Dean Huijsen to Real Madrid, Milos Kerkez to Liverpool and Illia Zabarnyi to Paris St Germain in the close season. Adli started his senior career at French side Toulouse before moving to Leverkusen in 2021. He registered 23 goals and 25 assists in 143 appearances for the German club, helping them to an undefeated domestic league and Cup double in the 2023-24 season. 'Amine is a proven winner and someone that will be a real asset to our squad,' Bournemouth's President of Football Operations Tiago Pinto said in a statement. 'He's someone that has competed at the highest level and his ambition is very much aligned with ours.' Adli will link up with Bournemouth ahead of Saturday's Premier League home game against Wolverhampton Wanderers. Bournemouth, who finished ninth last season, lost their opener against reigning Premier League champions Liverpool 4-2 last week. — Reuters

Doak joins Bournemouth as Liverpool exodus grows
Ben Doak, signed from Celtic for just £600,000 in 2022, made only 10 first-team appearances for Liverpool. (Bournemouth pic) LONDON : Scotland international winger Ben Doak has joined Bournemouth in a deal worth up to £25 million (US$34 million), taking Liverpool's tally from player sales beyond £200 million during this transfer window. The 19-year-old, who joined from Celtic for just £600,000 in 2022, made only 10 appearances for the Liverpool first team. Doak impressed during a loan spell at second tier Middlesbrough and picked up six caps at international level last season. The BBC reported that Bournemouth will pay an initial £20 million with a further £5 million in add-ons. 'I feel like it's the right time for me and it's a great opportunity to play regular football at the highest level. It feels like the perfect fit,' said Doak. 'The team play very nice football. It's fast and it really suits my game, so I felt like I couldn't say no to the chance to play here.' Doak follows Luis Diaz, Darwin Nunez, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Caoimhin Kelleher, Jarell Quansah and Tyler Morton in leaving the Premier League champions in recent months. That has allowed the Reds to spend around £300 million on strengthening Arne Slot's squad with the signings of Florian Wirtz, Hugo Ekitike, Jeremie Frimpong, Milos Kerkez and Giovanni Leoni. More arrivals are expected at Anfield before the close of the window in two weeks. A £110 million bid for Newcastle's Alexander Isak has been reportedly rejected, while Crystal Palace captain Marc Guehi is also closing in on a shift to the champions.
