The toxic cousin of a gourmet delicacy could put foodies at risk of a devastating and irreversible neurological disorder.
A true morel is one of the most luxurious and sought-after wild mushrooms, often featured in high-end cuisine from risotto to a cream sauce over steak due to its earthy, nutty flavor and exclusive seasonal availability.
Morels are coveted in the culinary world, but they have deceptive, poisonous lookalikes.
False morels have tricked amateur foragers and garnered true fans in a town called Montchavin, a village in the French Alps, for their 'rejuvenating' properties. Despite their name, though, they belong to an entirely different family of fungi, the Gyromitra.
False morels contain compounds called hydrazines that are toxic to the nervous system. While eating one may cause abdominal pain and diarrhea, in severe cases, a false morel can cause seizures and multi-organ failure. Gyromitrin, the main toxin in the mushroom, is also a carcinogen.
Recently, scientists believe they've found a link between false morels and Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) in Montchavin, as a mysterious cluster of cases has developed over the last decade.
Also known as Lou Gehrig's disease, ALS is a fatal neurological disorder that progressively paralyzes patients.
Montchavin has a permanent population of about 200 people, and the average global diagnosis rate of ALS is two to three diagnoses per 100,000 people annually. Yet in the last decade, there have been 16 cases reported in Montchavin, far more than what would be expected.
If made comparable to a rate in 100,000 people per year, Montchavin's rate would be 800 cases per 100,000 residents per year.
The search for answers was led by Dr Emmeline Lagrange, a neurologist practicing at Grenoble University Hospital, 84 miles southwest of the village. A resident of Montchavin who had been experiencing neurological issues had been referred to Lagrange, who diagnosed them with ALS.
She would later learn on a call with the patient's referring physician in Montchavin that this was one of several ALS cases in the small mountain village.
None of the patients had a gene mutation making them more susceptible to ALS or a family history of the disease, which causes continuously worsening paralysis over time, leading to death after two to five years.
Scientists are still investigating the cause of ALS, which affects roughly 33,000 Americans.
Genetics are behind between 10 and 15 percent of cases, while the rest could be tied to environmental exposures, including toxic pollution, smoking, exposure to heavy metals like lead and mercury, and a history of head injuries.
Lagrange published an abstract summarizing her investigation into the unusual ALS cluster, which caught the eye of environmental neuroscientist Dr Peter Spencer of the Oregon Health & Science University in Portland.
Spencer is the leading proponent of a separate theory linking food to the degenerative disease.
His theory was that toxins in cycad seeds, once a staple of Guam's Chamorro people, triggered an epidemic of Western Pacific ALS-Parkinsonism dementia (ALS-PDC).
At its peak, ALS-PDC was 50 to 100 times more common in Guam than ALS rates worldwide. In the 1950s, incidence rates reached about 200 per 100,000 among Chamorro adults.
He has investigated the link for over four decades, arguing that a compound in cycad seeds called cycasin metabolizes into a neurotoxic DNA-damaging byproduct called methylazoxymethanol (MAM).
MAM is also formed when the body metabolizes hydrazine, a volatile chemical used in rocket fuels and also found in false morels.
When Spencer saw a presentation of Lagrange's abstract, his mind lingered on one line.
He told Knowable Magazine: 'I noted that among the foodstuffs they reported were mushrooms.
'And I asked them what type of mushrooms, because one particular type contains poisons associated with the Guam problem.'
They began collaborating on a study. Lagrange had learned that the ALS patients in Montchavin had been purposely seeking out false morels, believing they had rejuvenating properties, despite their illegal status.
A villager told Lagrange: 'They are always in a group, a secret group, a social network, and they eat the mushrooms. And they all knew that it's forbidden.'
The researchers included those patients in their study, as well as 48 villagers without the disease who ate wild mushrooms, but not false morels.
Some ALS patients had a history of collecting up to six pounds of the poisonous fungi during the spring and summer and eating them throughout the year. People who had been diagnosed with ALS had been eating the mushrooms for as long as 20 years before ALS symptoms arose.
'All ALS cases but none of the controls had a history of consuming acutely poisonous False Morels, notably the Snow Morel Gyromitra gigas,' Lagrange concluded.
'Since no other significant chemical or physical exposure was found, the primary risk factor for ALS in this community appears to be repeated ingestion of these neurotoxic fungi.'
Despite the false morel's toxicity, it is a delicacy in parts of Scandinavia, where Michelin-starred restaurants incorporate it on seasonal menus for its tang and nuttiness.
The Finns are such big fans that the species was featured on a 1974 postage stamp.
False morels are also endorsed by the Finnish Food Authority, which advises people to repeatedly boil and rinse fresh or dried specimens before eating.
Despite their differences in appearance, amateur foragers often confuse true morels with false ones, which resemble a reddish brain.
A June 2024 Toxicon study identified 118 false morel poisonings in Michigan between 2002 and 2020.
Most of the patients suffered from vomiting, diarrhea, and abdominal pain, while over a dozen developed liver damage. One sustained a kidney injury, and others reported neurological effects such as headaches and dizziness.

Walking to work saves you money and gets your step count up – but scientists say it also cuts the risk of certain cancers. Commuting on foot almost halves the risk of liver tumours and slashes the odds of getting kidney cancer by a third. By contrast, driving every day increases the likelihood of suffering from bladder cancer by almost 40 per cent. Scientists from Oxford University and the University of Auckland in New Zealand analysed how daily travel affected the risk of getting certain tumours, looking at the commuting habits of more than 250,000 Britons aged 40 to 69. They found that 14 per cent of volunteers walked to work, 8 per cent cycled, 15 per cent used public transport and 63 per cent drove. Previous research by the team had shown walking or cycling to work daily cuts the danger of breast and bowel cancer. The latest research, published in the International Journal of Epidemiology, looked at commuting's links with 16 other cancers. Apart from liver and kidney tumours, the team found that travel habits had no obvious impact on the rest. They said: 'Active commuting, such as walking, integrates exercise into daily routines, while driving increases sedentary behaviour.' The scientifically proven way to stay cool The mercury is climbing again and Britain is basking in yet another heatwave. But if you're wondering how best to stay cool in the sweltering conditions, fear not – scientists have come up with the perfect formula. The trick is to use an electric fan to cool the body's exterior, while drinking the right amount of cold water for your weight – to ensure you don't overheat inside. Researchers from Heibei Vocational University of Technology and Engineering in Xingtai, China, found that the body cools best when someone sits near a fan and downs 6ml of cold water an hour for every kilogram they weigh. For someone weighing 90kg – or around 14st – this equates to 540ml of cold water, or just under a pint, every hour. A person weighing 60kg, or just under 10st, would need to drink around 360ml an hour – or two-thirds of a pint. This researchers found that this method was the best way to lower body temperature, minimise sweat loss and reduce blood pressure and heart rate. Drinking smaller quantities of water while using a fan – or just using a fan on its own – was much less effective, according to results published in the Journal of Thermal Biology. The Chinese researchers recruited 14 young men and subjected them to eight hours of extreme heat exposure – with temperatures averaging 36.5C (97.7F). At different times they either had no cooling aids at all, just used a fan, or had a fan and access to different quantities of cold water. Fans helped but without drinking water simultaneously they increased the risk of dehydration, the study found. And too little cold water failed to stem the negative effects of heat on the body. In a report the researchers said heatwaves will become a bigger threat to health – especially as many homes are not equipped with air conditioning. Each year the NHS carries out about 1.3 million such operations in England, including appendix removal and hernia repair, which usually leave patients needing painkillers afterwards. Laughter is already known to promote the release of endorphins – the body's natural painkillers – and ease the tension in muscles which can contribute to pain. In a bid to test how far it worked in practice, researchers recruited 176 patients who were due to have abdominal surgery. Half of the group were asked to watch 25 minutes of clips from a popular TV comedy, while the rest were not given anything to watch. The results, published in the journal Nursing And Health Sciences, showed that those who had enjoyed a good belly laugh reported reduced levels of anxiety before the operation and lower levels of pain afterwards. On average, their anxiety and pain levels were found to be almost half of those in the group who did not watch the show. The Turkish scientists concluded that watching comedy could be a useful drug-free way to prepare for surgery. 'Whether it is minor or major surgery, pre-operative anxiety is seen in many patients,' they said. 'But humour and laughter can increase tolerance to pain and have positive effects on mood.'

With more than 100 million cuppas drunk every day, tea has long been Britain's favourite beverage. But a brew-up may just have become rather less palatable after scientists found an unpleasant hidden ingredient lurking alongside the milk, hot water and tea leaves. A study has found that a hot cup of tea made with a teabag contains traces of microplastics – tiny particles of plastic invisible to the human eye, whose effect on our health is still being investigated. They are thought to come from the bags rather than the tea leaves, because the plastic polypropylene is used to seal them and prevent them falling apart when wet. Researchers believe that when boiling water is poured on the bags they release microscopic particles of these plastics into the drink – and the bad news for tea snobs is that the most expensive brands are the worst culprits because they sometimes coat their teabags with plastics to make them feel 'silkier' and luxurious. The study is the latest to find microplastics in the food chain, including in tap and bottled water. The concern is that they can enter the body and cause harm, although the World Health Organisation says there is no convincing evidence of health effects in humans. But research has suggested that an accumulation in the body could be linked to hormone issues, weight gain and some cancers. The University of Birmingham researchers said: 'Our findings highlight the potential health risk associated with microplastic contamination in tea. 'The most expensive teabag brand showed the highest concentrations, significantly exceeding those in low-priced teabags. 'Continued exposure to microplastics through drinks may contribute to daily intakes, leading to potential adverse implications for health.' The study is thought to be the first to look at microplastic contamination of different cold and hot drinks from the same country. Experts tested 31 drinks from UK brands. None was named. Hot tea had the highest average content, with 60 microplastics per litre – 12 to 15 in a cup or a mug. This was three times as much as soft drinks, according to the study, which was published in the journal Science of the Total Environment. Tea in paper cups had among the highest levels, possibly because such cups have a plastic polyethylene coating that may degrade in hot water. Preparing tea in a glass cup decreased the risk. Hot coffee contained an average of 43 microplastics per litre, with more in a paper cup. Iced tea and coffee contained fewer microplastics. Fruit juices had an average of 30 per litre, energy drinks contained 25 and other soft drinks averaged 17. But Dr Tim Bond, of the Tea Advisory Panel, which promotes the health benefits of tea, said: 'The jury is still out on the impact of microplastics. They are everywhere – even in the air we breathe – so they can't be fully avoided.'

Studies have long linked air pollution to cardiovascular disease, with those most at risk tending to live near busy roads. Particles emitted from car exhaust fumes and tyre rubber can drift into nearby homes. Once inhaled, they enter the bloodstream and have been associated with an increased risk of high blood pressure, inflammation, abnormal heart rhythms and the build-up of plaque in the arteries. In the UK, the problem is said to be the number one environmental risk factor for heart and circulatory diseases – contributing to an estimated 14,000 deaths each year. But scientists at the University of Connecticut say portable air purifiers could be the solution. Researchers divided 154 adults living near highways in the US into two groups, giving one a high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) purifier to use in their homes. The other group was given the same unit with the filter removed, leaving it unable to properly purify the air. After a month, the groups swapped purifiers. Blood pressure measurements and questionnaires were carried out at the start and end of each period. Participants who started the study with elevated blood pressure saw it reduce during the time using the HEPA filter, while those given the sham unit saw their blood pressure increase in the same period. 'This research adds to growing evidence that simple interventions, like in-home air filtration, may help improve heart health for people at risk,' said Dr Douglas Brugge, chair of the Department of Public Health Sciences at the University of Connecticut and lead author of the study. According to the British Heart Foundation, 96 per cent of people in England are exposed to air pollution levels that exceed the limits set out by the World Health Organisation, while those living in deprived areas are at a significantly greater risk.
