It's always difficult to know what to expect when a new manufacturer joins the headphones game. Which part of the package is going to stand out, which is going to need work for the next model? With Nothing and its new Headphone (1), things were slightly easier to foretell.
Like the Oracle of Delphi, I could have told you that the headphones were going to look excellent. And they do — point one for the Oracle. I also could have told you they'd undercut the competition in price — and they do that too. Another point for the Oracle. What I couldn't have told you is how they were going to sound.
Now that I've got them in my hands, I can tell you how they sound, and while the story is no Greek tragedy, it's not a shining tale of godly heroism, either: The Nothing Headphone (1) are treacherously close to being some of the best headphones, but they're going to require some work from you to adjust the EQ to your liking. And that's far easier said than done.
The Nothing Headphone (1) have launched at a surprisingly compelling price for something that comes with so many flagship features. Here in the U.S. they undercut the Sony and Bose alternatives by a healthy $100 at $299, making them cheaper than both the Sony WH-1000XM5 and the Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones.
And that's important in the grand scheme of things. They're aimed directly at the flagship models with comparable build, styling and features. That's an impressive package for such a saving — but things do get trickier for Nothing's new headphones when you start to consider some of the similarly priced competition.
They've got to fight off Cambridge Audio's less expensive and sonically superior Melomania P100, for one. That's a tall order with the gaping void between the two in core sound.
Then there's the Marshall Monitor III, which take the battery life claims of the Headphone (1) to school. So yes, they are a similarly specced but cheaper alternative to the flagship models, but there's still plenty of competition for the Nothing Headphone (1) in an arguably more well-stocked price bracket.
Nothing has become well-known for its standout, transparent design. The Nothing Headphone (1) were never going to be an exception to the rule, and from the moment you pull them from their cardboard prison, you're treated to one of the most unique-looking and feeling pairs of headphones you can buy today.
They're square, a bit like the AirPods Max, but flatter thanks to Nothing's cassette motif. The initial plane of the earcups is metal and feels great under the finger, and then the transparent panel that brings the Nothing house style sits on top.
Under that clear panel is what looks like a cassette on each ear. Remember those? It looks like the designer at Nothing does, because there are constant references to audio gear of the past all over the place. They've got a retro futuristic style, and it's one that I really appreciate. Headphones should be fun, and that's something that Nothing has got very, very right.
I imagine the design will be quite divisive, however. Not everyone will be interested in a pair of headphones that look quite so 'out-there', instead preferring the classic look of the competition. And that's ok — it's nice to have variety. The spice of life, as it were, is different-looking headphones.
The design and its thick cushioning make for a fairly comfortable fit, although there are a couple of foibles to dampen the experience. The headband foam isn't the thickest in the world, and I found that after a couple of hours of wear, I could feel the plastic headband beneath.
The earcups are overall comfortable too, but a word of warning for earring and stud wearers (like me): If you've got a cartilage piercing, I found that the headphones press down in just the wrong place. It's not initially uncomfortable or painful, but it is annoying. They also have a habit of pressing down on my lobes in such a way that my piercings there were disturbed. Again, more annoying than uncomfortable.
So that they can battle better against the established options from Bose and Sony, Nothing has packed the Headphone (1) full of features. That means you can expect a form of head-tracked spatial audio on board, a solid app to change a range of settings, and even different wired listening modes that rely on both the headphone jack and USB-C ports.
We'll start with the spatial audio implementation — and, as with so many other uses of the term, it's another custom thing that Nothing has used. In this case, it's not going to use Dolby Atmos Mixes brought from Amazon Music Unlimited or Apple Music, instead doing its own job to try and widen the soundstage.
If you absolutely need your music to sound like it's coming from all around you it's fine. But in the long run, it serves more to thin out the already anemic mid-range, and completely obliterate any form of body that the sound once had. Head tracking is fine, but overall, a mode worth leaving in the 'off' position.
You'll find that 'off' switch in the Nothing X app, the same one you'll have used for Nothing and CMF's earbuds. It's a simple application to use, with large buttons and well-labelled functions and features. Here, you'll be able to control the ANC level, change the way that the on-device physical controls work, and play with the settings.
There's also a very strong EQ menu which you're going to have to become extremely intimate with should you choose to pick up a pair of the Headphone (1)s. I'll talk more about it later on, but for now I'll just say this — I'm glad that there's so much adjustment here, because the core sound is so imminently disappointing that it needs a lot of work from you, the person who bought them, to sound better.
There's also a bass slider. It makes the headphones sound boomy, even at the lowest level. Don't touch it. No, don't you touch that dial.
There's also a very strong EQ menu which you're going to have to become extremely intimate with.
There are three different listening modes. The Bluetooth connection is 5.3, with support for LDAC and other hi-res codecs. It's good, and about what you'd expect from Bluetooth headphones. Then there are the two wired listening modes.
The first is the 3.5mm headphone jack. That means you can listen from older devices, like an iPod. It's fine, although it still requires the headphones to be turned on and filled with battery juice for it to work. That's a shame. Once the headphones are dead, they're dead. Boo.
Secondly, there's the USB-C listening mode, which lets you listen to hi-res tracks from Apple Music, Qobuz and Tidal. It's great! I'm not entirely sure that many people are going to notice a groundbreaking sonic difference given the internals aren't capable of such nuance, but it's a welcome addition to the cans.
There are few things I hate in this world. Wasps. Mashed potato. Square pizza. Touch controls. So you can imagine how excited I was when I discovered that Nothing would be bringing physical controls to the Nothing Headphone (1). I was even more excited when I discovered how intuitive they are.
Starting with the simple ones, there's a power switch on the bottom of the right earcup and a customizable button on the outer surface. Both are clicky and responsive, although the switch is perhaps a little small.
It's the playback controls that are truly lovely, however. There's a volume roller thing which spins under the finger. It's an alternative to Apple's digital crown from the AirPods Max, and I love it. It clicks down to change ANC mode and play/pause the music as well.
Underneath the volume roller there's what Nothing calls a paddle. It clicks forward and backward to skip tracks, and you can hold it to scroll through a track. Both controls are easily accessible and intuitive to use. There was no adjustment period here, just pure, rolly, clicky goodness...apart from one annoying issue.
The sound that's piped into the headphones when you use the controls. The volume control clicks at an uncomfortable timbre, and the audio cues that tell you ANC is on and off are grating. It's a bit like nails on a chalkboard or someone rubbing some packing polystyrene. I'm not a fan and you can't turn them off.
This is about as close to Sony and Bose as you're going to get if you're looking for solid noise canceling. I've been super impressed with the ANC of the Nothing Headphone (1) during my testing. It's got all the bells and whistles, including different ANC levels and even an adaptive mode that changes depending on the noise level of your environment.
Play music and the outside world is all but completely silenced. In my small office space, I couldn't hear my fan at max level (it's really, really hot), the humming of my laptop, the sound of the fan outside or even the clacking of my keyboard — something that other ANC models often struggle with.
If I tried really hard, I could defeat it — but what's the point of that?
Taking the ANC outside gave me similar results. The bus was instantly calmer and more comfortable thanks to the headphones, with tire and engine noise silenced.
There is one problem, however, and that's wind noise. The headphones struggle with blowy breezes more than some, as I found when I could hear the air from my fan and then the wind outside while I was on a walk. It's not massively distracting, but it is noticeable. And disappointing.
I've found that the Headphone (1)'s call quality is almost the same amongst options at this price, but not quite up there in mic quality. The mic is uncommonly bad when compared to other options out there. My call partner complained that I sound like I was talking down a metal tube; not good.
Things on my end were fine, thankfully — although you'll want to use the mic in your laptop for conference and work calls.
The Nothing Headphone (1) are, apparently, tuned by one of my favorite audio brands: KEF. I love KEF. My speakers are KEF, my TV speakers want to be KEF, and my endgame HiFi contains a set of the brand's completely out-of-reach blade speakers.
So you can imagine how I felt when I discovered that KEF would be behind the sound of the Nothing Headphone (1).
Imagine my disappointment when I put the Headphone (1) on my head and discovered a sound signature that seemed counter to everything that I love about the brand. KEF is known for sonic analysis: High frequencies that are able to extract precise detail from a track and show you all the little bits you've been missing. The Nothing Headphone (1)s are…not that.
My first listen showed me a pair of headphones that were mid-focused. With more listening, however, I noticed that there's a significant darkness thanks to an over-reliance on mid-bass, which swallows the highs and the mids completely.
It's a restrictive soundstage, and it leaves music feeling distant and one-note. It's not horrible by any stretch of the imagination, but there are similarly priced headphones that sound much better out of the box.
Thankfully, the EQ in the app is very strong, and lets you dial in the sound to your preferred listening curve. For better sound quality, I boosted the upper mids so that I can get more guitar and musical body, then lowered some of the mid-bass to get rid of some of the tonal darkness. The highs have been increased so that I can get more detail as well.
It's worked well enough, although I suspect I will spend more time tinkering to get the sound I really want. As it stands, they now sound good, although there are still options out there that sound better, like the Cambridge Audio Melomania P100.
The chainsaw guitars of Witchery in Legion require some of the upper-mid edge to sound as scary as they should, and after my adjustments, we're pretty much there. The dual guitars are fairly easy to separate throughout the brutal assault on your eardrums, but even after some adjustment to the lowest bass frequencies, the kick drum lacks a certain amount of 'oomph' that I look for. The vocals are well defined though, and after my high-range changes, the cymbals sound good and airy. It's cold and unforgiving, just as intended.
TWICE's Strategy brings some decent low-end to the table, but some of the impact is lost at the very bottom. The vocals really shine, though, as the girls talk you through their titular strategy. The synths wobble smoothly, and every bell 'ting' is clear and concise. There's perhaps some control lacking in the very low stuff, but it's otherwise a good performance.
Finally, Limp Bizkit bring the '90s with My Way. The mid-bass comes into its own, filling the soundscape with distorted bass guitar; Durst's slurred pseudo-singing is clear and well-defined, and the drums sound very good indeed. We're lacking some impact, again, but it's about as sludgy and filled with attitude as you'd hope.
Nothing, where does that extra 45 hours worth of battery go when I turn the ANC on? The ANC is very good, but that's a gaping inconsistency that feels strange when the Sony and Bose options have far less difference between ANC on and off.
The 80 hours of ANC off battery is very good, to be clear, but 35 hours with ANC on is about what you'd expect from the competition. Given how long they last with noise canceling off, it does feel like a shame that the battery isn't quite up there when it's on. Still, they've got decent battery life.
My testing showed the battery life claims to be pretty much on the mark. After 8 hours of use I was down to about 70% battery, which is about what you'd expect. That's with volume at medium and with the ANC turned on. Just keep in mind that the overall battery life will vary depending on the set volume level, ANC level, and even the genre of music you're listening to.
I'm torn. On the one hand, I really like the Nothing Headphone (1). They look excellent, and I'm genuinely excited to see something different in terms of design. I like how the price undercuts the likes of Sony and Bose while bringing comparable specs to the table, and I think it's important for upstarts to upset the established headphone norm.
But there's a big sound-shaped issue that keeps me from whooping and hollering about the Headphone (1). EQ should be a nice extra to help you dial in your headphones to your preferred sound, not a fix for middling sound out of the box.
It goes to show just how good a job Cambridge Audio did with the Melomania P100, mind you. In fact, I'd say you should probably look at those instead, if you don't mind leaving spatial audio behind.
The Nothing Headphone (1) are a good pair of headphones, but their sonic downfall makes it tricky to recommend them over the competition. Instead, I can suggest you wait for the Nothing Headphone (2) to come out further down the line. If the sound is fixed, we're onto a surefire winner.

Social media forums indicate that a lot of people don't like that camera layout, price, or have polarizing views on the Glyph Matrix. I might be on the less popular end for both. I liked the Nothing Phone 3's odd design choices when I first saw it in person at the London launch event. I was taken aback by the price, sure. But I wanted to give it a try nonetheless. I've now used the Nothing Phone 3 for a few days, and I like how it feels in my hand. I don't mind the weird camera setup and quite love the rest of the design. I haven't noticed its processor, for better or worse, and every time I flip it around, I pause for a second to look at that strange back layout. The Glyph Interface has been more fun than before, and the blinking red dot is a nice addition. It's all part of the quirky design. But you don't buy a phone for its quirks. Most people look for the best value proposition in their new phone, and the Nothing Phone 3 isn't for most people. It doesn't have the 'flagship' chipset, and I wouldn't rate its cameras the best in the segment. But the Nothing Phone 3 has grown on me. And it is now more important than ever with the Phone 3's polarizing design. I love the ability to add Quick Settings as one-tap widgets. For example, I have a QR code scanner for payments and a Wi-Fi toggle, which turns a three-step task into a single tap. Nothing Phone 3 is ergonomic and comfortable to hold for a big phone. I've grown used to the Nothing Phone 3 because there's not much to complain about in the software or the in-hand feel. I don't play mobile games, so I'm not concerned about the processor. And more so because I haven't had any stutters or lags in day-to-day usage that might trigger me to look for a more capable phone. Add to it, the Essential Key (with Essential Space) is a nice way to quickly save story ideas when I'm reading something on Chrome. (The Essential Search's speed needs improvement, though.) In my usage, the Nothing Phone 3 has lasted me a full day with ease. Notably, I have the 5,500mAh battery variant, as opposed to the 5,150mAh cell you'd find on US or UK units. I got up to eight and a half hours of SoT with social media hopping, intensive Reel-watching, WhatsApp messaging, using Slack for work, and snapping a few photos. The problem is that the Nothing Phone 3a Pro offers a similar experience at a more affordable price. Essential Space, all-day battery, big screen, no-lag performance – it's all up for grabs under $500. For $799, you get the fun of the Glyph Matrix, the best cameras Nothing has put on a phone, and longer software support. More Functional Glyph LEDs and better cameras Prakhar Khanna / Android Authority The Nothing Phone 3 features some strange design choices that play around the edges of uniformity. The periscope telephoto camera sits close to the edge, away from the rest of the layout; the Glyph Matrix screen looks oddly placed when it's not in use. And yet, there is a sense of uniformity in the rest of the phone's design. The Nothing Phone 3 has a certain whimsical vibe to it that I love. I've said in the past how Glyph Lights were in-your-face and caught me off guard in certain instances in public. The Glyph Matrix, on the other hand, has been more functional and fun for me. It's like the notification light from Android phones of the past, only charged up to put the 'fun' in 'function.' I love the customizability it offers with the combination of 489 LEDs and a physical button to control it. Glyph Matrix is way more fun than I expected it to be, but I'll probably forget about it. For instance, I've set it up to notify me of calls from three contacts (with three separate icons) I never want to miss a call from. So, when I'm in the middle of typing a story, I can glance over at the small screen and decide whether to attend the call or not. Is it possible to do so with the phone placed on a table and the screen facing you? Absolutely. Always-on display can do that. But I tend to keep my phone upside down because I don't want to be bothered by every notification. With the Glyph Matrix, I can choose what gets my attention more selectively and add a personalized touch to it. Apart from the notifications, the Glyph Matrix can show a digital clock, help you take a selfie by mirroring your face in black-and-white pixels, offer a stopwatch, battery indicator, camera countdown timer, and indicate volume levels. There are also fun games like Spin the Bottle, Magic 8 Ball, and Rock-Paper-Scissors, which are party tricks for the most part. I'm looking forward to what third-party developers and the community build for Glyph Matrix. It's at a nascent stage right now, like the Dynamic Island was when it first launched with the iPhone 14 Pro series. I'd love for food delivery apps to show me the ETA of my order. As for the optics, I wasn't expecting much from the Phone 3's cameras because my review unit had very bad shutter lag. Nothing fixed it with an update, and the 50MP triple camera array now delivers impressive results. It isn't the best in the segment and struggles in low light, but at the same time, it shoots photos with nice colors, plenty of detail, and good exposure. I traveled with it to London, and the 3x optical zoom came in handy. The ultrawide and selfie cameras, alongside Nothing's camera filters round up the experience pretty well. I didn't expect the Nothing Phone 3 to grow on me. I still consider it expensive at $799, but I've enjoyed using it and see potential in the Glyph Matrix. It isn't a value-for-money contender but the new Nothing phone delivers top-notch software, fun design quirks, five years of OS upgrades alongside seven years of security updates, all-day battery life, and a satisfactory camera performance. You can get a more capable flagship phone with longer software support but it won't be this fun to use. The Nothing Phone 3 is now available in the US without the need for a beta program and should work with all the major carriers.

The Nothing Phone 3 has one of the most outlandish designs of any device out there, and it's ruffled more than a few feathers. Frankly, it's shaken the whole henhouse. Every Nothing device, from Phone 1 through Phone 3a, all featured transparent glass backs and a 'Glyph Interface' full of winding LED strips that would light up with custom alerts or visual cues. That's gone with the Phone 3, replaced with a field of square boxes called the 'Glyph Matrix' that displays simple pixelated images and a trifecta of asymmetrical, misaligned camera bumps. To sum it up, fans hated it, and one word showed up in critiques over and over: 'ugly.' In an interview with Design Milk, Nothing's lead designer, Adam Bates, extolled the Glyph Matrix with its small field of micro-LEDs as more 'expressive,' but he failed to articulate just what the hell was going on with the rest of the device. We're still planning to share our full thoughts on the Phone 3, where we'll compare Nothing's first $800 'flagship' mobile device to other expensive phones, but I'm not here to talk about its supposed less-than-flagship chip or the quality of the cameras compared to other heavy hitters. I'm not even here to talk about how repairable it is compared to other devices. I just want to talk about how the thing looks. Guess what? It looks good. We sit here every day hearing from consumers just how bored they are with the same slab phone design. Every iPhone is practically indistinguishable from the latest Samsung Galaxy or Google Pixel phone—from the flat sides and rounded corners down to the camera bump. We want a design that tells a story, that examines the tech housed inside that chassis of glass and metal. So why is the internet so universally antagonistic to something that tells a story through its aesthetic? The manufacturers of phone cameras often combine all lenses into a single array. That's how most of the larger phone makers procure them—prefabricated. Your regular iPhone 16 Pro places each Sony-made lens in a triangular pattern, but the actual apparatus is connected to the phone's motherboard as one unit. In a teardown of the phone shared exclusively with Gizmodo, the repair gurus at iFixit showed how each camera is an individual unit on the Nothing Phone 3. The repair team said there are four press connectors that attach to the top of the motherboard, and you can remove all three cameras without needing to take out the motherboard. The Phone 3 has a 50-megapixel wide, a 50-megapixel periscope, and a 50-megapixel ultrawide lens. We don't know if Nothing procured its cameras like this because it was cheaper or for some other reason related to supply chains or its mobile design. iFixit told us the cameras are arranged so it may be possible to shift the top telephoto sensor, aligning top to bottom. It's unclear if this would cause some other issue with the device or if the parts sourced for the phone wouldn't allow for cameras to sit in a row. Either way, it comes across as eye-catching, an asymmetry that I would describe as evocative in a way that speaks to the niche online circles who love modding and pseudo-analog tech. It harkens to my growing appreciation for ad hoc-stylized science fiction, specifically all that gets laid under the umbrella of 'cyberpunk.' I've been a little too obsessed with CD Projekt Red's Cyberpunk 2077 lately, partially because I had to play the game ported to both Switch 2 and Mac in quick succession. The game holds a beauty far beyond the number of pixels it's pushing. It's all down to the inherent design ethos, which you can find in its digital art book. The game's designers took inspiration from classic high-tech, low-society genre sci-fi. Other great examples of this kind of asymmetrical tech can be seen in the many examples inspired by the anime film Ghost in the Shell, down to the Brazilian cover art of William Gibson's seminal 1984 novel Neuromancer designed by artist Josan Gonzalez (we'll have to see if the upcoming Apple TV show can match our collective imaginations). In this art, we see the tech exposed, wires exploding out of devices like exposed veins connected to an LED heart—what would be nonsense and excessive by most standards of engineering. The Phone 3 isn't that explicit, but its glass back and near-nonsensical panels are obviously drawing from this style of tech. The developers of Cyberpunk 2077 managed to encapsulate this style in their game. They crafted four separate archetypes that can help us understand where the Phone 3 fits in. One of those that stands out is 'Entropism'—the idea that crude necessity and slapdash tech can itself be a kind of 'style.' This is the opposite of what the designers called 'Kitsch,' which could be best boiled down to style over substance—or gaudy extremes and neon caked into every crevice, serving no purpose. Then there's 'Neokitsch,' a combination of the former two, extolling excess while working within the confines of practicality. The Phone 3 fits neatly into that category, though its off-white plastic almost has a kind of 'NASA Punk' appearance akin to Bethesda's Starfield. Naysayers lambaste its odd misplacement of the three camera bumps. That asymmetry is not a flaw but a necessity born out of how Nothing decided to source its three cameras. Other teardowns by YouTuber JerryRigEverything show us how the makers of the Phone 3 created a wireless charging coil that's shaped like an apple with a bite taken out of it. This odd shape means it could support the special glyph button used to operate the new Glyph Matrix. Whether or not that button is usable or even useful is another question. Instead, we can take in the design and understand more of why it was built the way it was. There's a beauty in that. It's expression through design and engineering, something that's so rarely seen in today's world of Apple-like, all-too-clean tech. The Phone 3 design isn't what anyone would call 'lo-fi,' but in ways it reminds me of how special effects designers imagine technology. Star Wars is one of the best examples of a high-tech setting with a low-tech aesthetic—born out of director George Lucas and the first film's prop crafters' need to make futuristic devices with whatever was on hand. That history of design extends to today's best Star Wars content. Andor's first season is a perfect example of this. In episode 5, the young idealist Karis Nemik extols the benefits of tech not made by the Empire, that it can be remodeled and remade by its owner. His device is blocky, asymmetrical, and dirty. That's because it was likely an old Polaroid camera, specifically an SX-70, with other bits and bobs stapled to its front and sides. We don't know what all those doohickeys are for, but it drives the imagination. Similarly, the Phone 3 wants me to wonder what each random button does, why the cameras are located where they are, or why it has a red camera light. Even if the answer isn't as engaging as the question, I'm glad it made me wonder all the same. Despite the appearance of modularity, there's nothing to say the Nothing Phone 3 is any more repairable than the company's previous devices. iFixit told Gizmodo the phone is annoying to open since it requires users to remove several adhesive components, including the back cover. If Nothing worked to make its phones the most customizable, the most repairable, and combined that with a look that emphasizes all those, it would be a winner. What if Nothing started to sell parts to its phones while maintaining its 'Neokitsch' style? That would be enough to truly set the brand apart from all the others, and maybe it would be enough to calm the haters… maybe.

With its new QM8K QLED, TCL has removed them entirely. Innovations in panel design mean that this blindingly bright screen looks like it's floating in space on its pedestal mount. It's a classy party trick that makes it easy to hide on the wall with images or artwork on it, and it improves the viewing angle to boot. This flagship model costs a pretty penny more than TCL's other value-first options, but that's for good reason: It competes directly with more expensive mini LED models from Samsung and Sony, and the great viewing angle and brightness even give high-end OLED models a run for their money. If you want a good picture and great apps for less, you can get it with a more affordable Hisense or TCL model, but if you want a great picture, this is the most affordable way to get it this year. Out of the Box Photograph: Parker Hall The experience of setting up the QM8K is basically the same as with any other TV. The QM8K comes in a large cardboard box surrounded by foam, and you'll want two people to pull it out, put it on a soft surface like a bed or table with a blanket, and install the included pedestal mount. It comes with a power cable and backlit (!) remote, but you'll need to supply your own HDMI cables if you want to connect anything to any of its four ports (two HDMI 2.1, two HDMI 2.0). I always love a TV with a pedestal mount, and this mount is sturdy and easy to attach. It also allows you to tilt the TV. Likewise, the included Google TV interface is extremely easy to use, with QR-based logins for essentially every modern streaming app, and speedy swaps between apps (something I had an issue with on last year's TCL models). The TV supports Chromecast and Airplay 2, which makes casting music and YouTube clips super easy for folks who are visiting and on your Wi-Fi. The TV has Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.3 support, and it was more than capable of keeping up with 4K streaming on my mesh network at home. It has Ethernet as well, should you want to hard-wire in for the fastest speeds. No Bezels Photograph: Parker Hall The lack of bezels isn't immediately noticeable if you're not looking for it, but once you see that the brushed gunmetal frame of the TV now immediately transitions to screen after just 3.2 millimeters—rather than having a 10 mm-ish black rim—every comparable model seems old and tired. The gorgeous crystal WHVA panel is capable of up to 3,040 local dimming zones (depending on the size of TV you buy), which makes for a stunning image, and the lack of frame makes it look like the picture is hovering in space.
