Two LSU baseball stars make SEC all-freshman team
A pair of LSU baseball freshmen earned recognition from the SEC following their first regular season with the Tigers.
Derek Curiel and Casan Evans were named to the conference's All-Freshman team among a group of 12 newcomers. In addition, the conference named Curiel to the second team among its best outfielders and hitters.
Multiple outlets listed Curiel as the top prospect in his class and he lived up to the hype during his rookie year in Baton Rouge as the everyday left fielder. His approach at the plate gets him on base at an impressive clip, ranking among the conference's best hitters.
Evans, a right-handed pitcher, carved out a critical role as a reliever. With a sub-two ERA, the freshman hurler pitched so well out of the bullpen that he was tabbed the Sunday starter late into SEC play for three-straight contests. Evans pitched three or more innings six times against conference opponents.
Derek Curiel
Curiel's .465 on-base percentage ranks tenth in the conference while his 72 hits and 41 walks are both tied for seventh. He finishes the regular season tied for the team lead with a .344 batting average and a team-best 15 doubles along with 53 runs and 45 RBI.
In a lineup filled with reliable hitters, Curiel relies on patience and base running to make an impact at the dish. His place among the best hitters in the conference solidifies him as a piece to build the program around for the future.
Casan Evans
Evans, alongside first-team All-SEC selection Zac Cowan, earned high leverage appearances as a reliever in his inaugural season with LSU. His 1.96 ERA ranks eighth in the conference but it was among the top five before he got innings as a starter.
The right-hander allowed just nine earned runs through 41.1 innings pitched. He has 53 strikeouts and eclipsed five or more five times this season. Evans' efforts as a reliever gave him a chance as the Sunday starter.

CBS Sports makes 'bold prediction' for Alabama football in Year 2 under Kalen DeBoer
Year 2 is always an important year for any college football coach at a Power Four program, especially one at a school as rich in tradition as the Alabama Crimson Tide. Kalen DeBoer is hoping his 2025 Alabama team, ranked No. 8 in both the preseason top 25 polls, avenges a four-loss campaign from last year and, at a minimum, returns to the College Football Playoff. Many analysts, including Fox Sports' Joel Klatt, ESPN's Mark Schlabach and others, believe they will. With kicking less than two weeks away, it's the time of year when the sport's top "insiders" lend themselves to bold predictions for the upcoming season. CBS Sports' Chip Patterson did the same with regard to Alabama in 2025: Patterson believes the Crimson Tide will win the SEC championship on December 6 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta. In CBS' annual "SEC expert picks," Patterson said: "Big bodies still matter in college football, and Alabama has plenty of them -- experienced, well-developed linemen forged in one of the country's premier NFL-talent incubators. Kalen DeBoer arrived relatively late in the cycle and inherited a significant roster exodus after Nick Saban's departure. Now, with a full year to settle in, the return of offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb, and a roster reshaped in his image, 2025 should be the first fair look at the DeBoer era. For a coach who has won at every level, it was never a matter of if but when he'd have Alabama competing for championships. The pieces are in place for that to happen this fall." After SEC media days wrapped up in July, the Texas Longhorns were named the runaway favorite to win the conference champion with 96 first-place votes. Kirby Smart's Georgia Bulldogs received the second-most first-place votes (44) by media members, while Alabama placed a distant third with 29 first-place votes. Patterson explained why he likes Alabama's chances to win the SEC this year. In short, it's the defense. "Alabama will have a top-five scoring defense nationally. The Crimson Tide have a pretty high floor when it comes to this category, annually ranking inside the top-20 and usually inside the top-15, but it's been a while since we looked to Tuscaloosa to find one of the country's truly dominant units. Alabama is old, big and experienced up front, and after the secondary had to grow up a bit, that side of the ball is looking like a real strength in 2025." It's been a while since Alabama went back-to-back years without an SEC championship. Since Nick Saban's first conference title at Alabama in 2009, the Crimson Tide have gone more than one year in between SEC crowns just once: in 2010 and '11. In 2011, Alabama played for the national championship anyway and mauled LSU in a 21-0 shutout. The Tide may not be the preseason favorite on everyone's ballots, but no one should be dismissing their chances outright. Alabama football schedule 2025 Alabama's season opener against Florida State at Doak Campbell is scheduled for a 2:30 p.m. CT kickoff on Aug. 30. The game will be televised on ABC. Former LSU football transfer quarterback Walker Howard named starter for in-state foe
Source: Louisiana has named former Ole Miss/LSU quarterback Walker Howard the school's starting quarterback, and he'll make his first college start against Rice on Aug. 30. Howard ranked as ESPN's No. 3 dual-threat QB recruit in Class of 2022 behind Cade Klubnik and Ty Simpson. Former LSU quarterback Walker Howard earned the starting role at his third school, according to a report from ESPN's Pete Thamel on Tuesday. Howard will make the first start of his collegiate career for Louisiana-Lafayette. The Ragin' Cajuns kick off their season against Rice on August 30 at 8 PM. Howard got the nod over redshirt sophomore Lunch Winfield and redshirt freshman Daniel Beale. Recruited during the 2022 cycle, Howard was the No. 3 dual-threat quarterback in the class behind Cade Klubnik and Ty Simpson as a top-50 overall recruit. He committed to LSU and spent the season backing up Heisman Trophy winner Jayden Daniels and Garrett Nussmeier before transferring. Howard stuck with LSU through a head coaching transition and was one of the top-ranked signees in Brian Kelly's first class. Howard played the past two years at Ole Miss and appeared in four games, completing three passes for 56 yards. The transfer to Louisiana marks a homecoming for the Lafayette native. He won two state titles at St. Thomas More High School.

LSU football's Brian Kelly says five-star freshman is pushing to start at right tackle
With less than two weeks to go before LSU football kicks off the 2025 season at Clemson, the Tigers are still shuffling their offensive line. Some positions are set. Tyree Adams will start at left tackle, and Virginia Tech transfer Braelin Moore will start at center. Everything else is up for grabs. At right tackle, the battle is heating up. Weston Davis was LSU's clear first-team right tackle for most of the offseason, but true freshman Carius Curne is beginning to push Davis. Curne has taken reps all over the offensive line this summer. In recent days, Curne has seen his workload at right tackle increase. Kelly said the move was about creating more competition. "I think there's still a battle for that next tackle position, which would be the right tackle. So we moved Carius over there to compete with Weston (Davis) to see who's our best," Kelly said. Kelly said LSU likes the progress of right tackle Ory Williams, but it wasn't enough to push Davis just yet. With Curne at right tackle, LSU has two SEC-ready players competing. Competition has been a theme of the offseason for LSU as Kelly finally feels the team has enough depth to create a competitive atmosphere. LSU isn't afraid to play true freshmen on the offensive line. Curne has the talent and physical tools to play right away. Per On3, he was a five-star and the No. 2-ranked interior offensive lineman in the class of 2025. LSU's offensive line has produced mixed results in training camp, but Kelly still feels good about the unit.
