Trent Alexander-Arnold tells Liverpool fans how long he's been learning Spanish

Metro5 hours ago

Trent Alexander-Arnold insists he has only been learning Spanish for 'a couple of months', despite producing a near-fluent speech at his Real Madrid unveiling last week.
The 26-year-old ex-Liverpool right-back was named in Xabi Alonso's starting XI for the side's Club World Cup opener against Al-Hilal on Wednesday to become the seventh Englishman to represent Madrid.
Madrid were forced to settle for a 1-1 draw and it was a mixed debut from Alexander-Arnold in Miami, which perhaps should be expected given the full-back had only signed on the dotted line at the Bernabeu just six days earlier.
Alonso's men looked to be heading for victory after Gonzalo Garcia broke the deadlock with a scuffed finish towards the end of the first half, only for Al-Hilal to equalise from the spot through Ruben Neves just seven minutes later.
Los Blancos pushed for a winner after the break, but a combination of the woodwork and some goalkeeping heroics from Al-Hilal's Yassine Bounou prevented Los Blancos from sealing all three points.

The La Liga giants will hope to make amends when they take on Mexican outfit Pachuca at North Carolina's Bank of America Stadium on Sunday evening.
'Incredible day. To have made my debut for Real Madrid, it's something that I think almost every player dreams of.To be able to achieve that is huge for me,' Alexander-Arnold told DAZN shortly after the final whistle.
'Of course, there's some disappointment in there to have not won the game.
'That's the mentality you need to have as a Real Madrid player, to want and expect to win every game we play in.
'We're disappointed not to have done that, but there were a lot of positives, especially in the second half.'
Alexander-Arnold, who was taken off for Lucas Vazquez in the second period, passed on his thanks to Madrid's 'truly amazing' fans who 'dominated the stands' at Hard Rock Stadium.
'Incredible. I felt the support from the moment I signed with the club, to be honest,' the England international added.
'Absolutely sensation. A fanbase that is global, truly global, all over the world. You feel it every single day.
'The fans are at the training ground, the hotel, all over social media. The support is incredible. A huge thank you for that.
'We dominated the stands today which is incredible. The support is truly amazing.'
Liverpool supporters were left stunned by the speech Alexander-Arnold gave at his Madrid presentation, leading many to speculate that a move had been in the works for much longer than the defender had been letting on.
But asked how long he had been learning the language, Alexander-Arnold replied: 'Not too long! A couple of months.
'It was something that I found was very important for me to do.

'I want to adapt and give myself the best start possible, going to a new city, a new country and a new team.
'It's important to show the intent and show that I want to embrace the culture, immerse myself in it and adapt as best as possible.
'That was very important for me to do that.'
Former Chelsea midfielder John Obi Mikel joked that Alexander-Arnold must have been learning Spanish for at least a year while reacting to the defender's post-match interview in the DAZN studio.
'He's been a fantastic player for Liverpool, he spent 20 years there and won everything for Liverpool,' Obi Mikel said.
'But one thing I disagree with him now is that he spent a couple of months learning Spanish. I don't agree with that!
'I think it's a bit longer… about a year.' More Trending
On Alexander-Arnold's debut display, Obi Mikel continued: 'You know when you play for Real Madrid that the scrutiny is going to get bigger.
'But, obviously, this is his first game. I don't think we need to judge him.
'Listen, what Trent gives you going forward is fantastic. Yes, sometimes we do criticise him about his defending, but I think now at Real Madrid, he's going to have time with Alonso to work on his defending.
'That's something he needs to tighten up. But going forward, what he gives you is absolutely fantastic.'

Rangers transfer target Conor Coady would 'no doubt' be a good signing for the Ibrox giants this summer but Leicester City should not sell him to the Ibrox club this summer, according to one Sky Sports pundit. The 10-cap England international faces an uncertain future at the King Power Stadium following Leicester's relegation from the English Premier League, with the future of manager Ruud van Nistelrooy still uncertain heading into the new season. However, with Leicester under the threat of a potential points deduction due to alleged breaches of the English Football League's (EFL) Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSR), the club must keep hold of Coady and reject any approaches from Rangers by Sky Sports pundit and former England midfielder Lee Hendrie, with his extensive experience likely to be invaluable as the club target an immediate return to the top flight. "I could see him at Ibrox, for sure,' Hendrie FootballLeagueWorld. 'I think that he could certainly step in and do a job at Rangers. There's no doubt about that. Andy Robertson has 'tailor made' transfer after Celtic pitch as £8m Taylor successor blocked and Inamura addressed

The Scotland captain looks to be nearing a Liverpool exit after eight years at Anfield Andy Robertson should head for Atletico Madrid if he leaves Liverpool this summer despite the prospect of a dream move to Celtic. The chase by the Premier League champions to sign Bournemouth left-back Milos Kerkez this summer has plunged the long-term Anfield future of Robertson into doubt. ‌ The 31-year-old has entered the final year of his deal - with Atleti said to have made Robertson their top target this summer. ‌ But the prospect of bringing Robertson to his boyhood club has been pitched by Pat Nevin - if an "affordable" package is agreed - despite the addition of Kieran Tierney potentially hampering a deal. However, McAvennie reckons playing under Diego Simeone should be the Scotland captain's top option this summer. He told his Let Me Be Frank podcast: 'If he is going to Simeone and Atlético Madrid. Andy Robertson is a tailor-made player for him. 'He is the kind of player he likes. A bit like Kieran Tierney. Full body goes in. He doesn't hold back from a tackle. "He's up and down. But he's a good defender – he will be a superstar in Spain if he goes. 'Andy has done brilliantly. He got knocked back from Celtic. He was told that, 'he wasn't good enough.' Went to Queen's Park. He's gone on to be a superstar. Fair play to the boy. He has dug in. ‌ 'It's a good example, don't listen to people. It's only one man's opinion.' However, Robertson has made no secret of the fact he would like to play for Celtic before the end of his career. He said back in 2020: 'If you asked me now what I would want to do, I would love to retire at Liverpool of course, but you know how hard it is to play at the highest of levels until you're 35, 36. I'd love to pull on the Celtic top and walk out at Parkhead. ‌ 'Do I want to go back at one point to even just live? Yeah, maybe.' The search for a left-back to rival Kieran Tierney is ramping up with Greg Taylor appearing to be heading for the exit door at the end of his contract. The 27-year-old has yet to decide his future with his Celtic contract rapidly approaching an end and both PAOK and FC Copenhagen chasing his signature. ‌ However, Sport Dog reports that talks with the Greek side have now been "frozen" and appear to have stalled. Former Hoops star Tosh McKinlay has admitted he hopes to see the defender stick it out and battle with returning Tierney for a starting spot. Speaking at the Taxi To Troon charity event in Glasgow, he said: "Special mention to Greg, I think he's been fantastic over the years and obviously it's still to be confirmed if he will be staying or going, but it would be great if he stayed and give Kieran some competition for that left back spot. ‌ 'He has been fantastic over this period of five or six years, and I'm sure he'll be wanting to stay as well.' Djurgarden wonderkid Keita Kosugi has been tipped as a potential successor should Taylor depart - and appears to have made his decision on a preferred next move. ‌ The 19-year-old left-back has reportedly had an £8million price tag placed on him by the Swedish side. Foot 7 Champions League winners sports advisor Luis Campos "accelerating" the process of a move. One player who looks set to make the switch to Celtic this summer is defender Hayato Inamura. The 23-year-old, currently at Albirex Niigata, is left-sided and can play both at centre-back and left-back. And amid heavy speculation that the Hoops could dip into the Japanese market again, an Albirex spokesman told Nikkan Sports an official offer had been received from a European club. He said: "We are leaving the negotiations to the clubs themselves, so we are not at the stage where we can talk about whether we will go or not."
