Mick Maynard's Shoes: What's next for Robert Whittaker after UFC on ABC 9 loss?

USA Today27-07-2025
Robert Whittaker suffered a critical loss at an important time in his career Saturday against Reinier de Ridder in the UFC on ABC 9 headliner.
Just as he voiced his intention to make a final title push before retirement, the former middleweight champion Whittaker (26-9 MMA, 17-7 UFC) dropped a split decision to de Ridder (20-2 MMA, 4-0 UFC) at Etihad Arena on Yas Island, Abu Dhabi, and he's now dropped consecutive fights for the first time in more than a decade.
Whittaker was hoping to rebound strong from a 2024 Submission of the Year loss to Khamzat Chimaev in October, but instead he's in uncharted territory after falling on the wrong side of the scorecards against an opponent who was ranked No. 12.
What does the future hold for Whittaker? Watch the video above for thoughts and analysis after the UFC on ABC 9 main event.

Yoel Romero gets date, opponent for BKFC debut

Yoel Romero has inked his bareknuckle boxing debut. The former UFC title challenger is set to make his first appearance for BKFC against Theo Doukas at BKFC 80 on Sept. 12 at Hard Rock Casino in Hollywood, Fla. The bout will be contested at heavyweight. The news of Romero's debut was announced by the promotion on Tuesday. Romero, 48, signed with BKFC in July. He was coming off two KO finishes competing in Mike Perry's Dirty Boxing Championship – which is a striking competition with small gloves but doesn't involve any grappling or groundwork. "The Soldier of God" is mainly known for his 10-year run in the UFC where he fought for the middleweight title multiple times and cemented himself as one of the world's best. After his UFC departure, Romero had a short stint with Bellator and PFL, going 3-2. Although now competing in bareknuckle boxing, Romero told MMA Junkie last month that he's still looking to continue his MMA career. Romero's opponent, Doukas, will also be making his BKFC debut. Doukas has competed four times in MMA, going 2-2. His two victories have come by way of stoppage. He last competed in MMA in April 2024 and was submitted in the second round. He's also 1-0 in boxing.

Anthony Hernandez not stressing over UFC title shot: 'It will all work out soon'

Anthony Hernandez hasn't lost a fight in half a decade, but he's yet to fight for a UFC championship. Hernandez (14-2 MMA, 8-2 UFC) is on quite the streak, picking up seven consecutive wins at 185 pounds with three Performance of the Night bonuses. "Fluffy" returns this Saturday as he headlines UFC on ESPN 72 (ESPN, ESPN+) against fellow contender Roman Dolidze (15-3 MMA, 9-3 UFC). Many wonder how many more wins Hernandez will need to earn his shot at the title, but Hernandez is not sweating it. "I've been getting tagged in stuff like, 'You're the dark horse,'" Hernandez told MMA Junkie on Monday. "A lot of people have been pissed that I'm at the Apex like, 'No, f*ck that. I wanted to go see him,' which is a f*cking blessing because now the fans are starting to get behind me. The true people that know martial arts, they know that I know my sh*t, so whatever, it will all work out soon." Should he get past Dolidze, Hernandez believes a title shot could come at any moment. "I'm ready for whatever," Hernandez said. "This game is crazy, and you never know what to expect in this f*cking world. Someone can get hurt, and you can get called tomorrow. F*ck, who knows?" Hernandez expects an exciting fight this Saturday. He believes Dolidze is the right dance partner to put on a show. "I watched his tape, and I've watched him fight a few times, too," Hernandez said. "Like I said, he's a big f*cking brute, he moves forward, and he throws everything to knock you out. I think it's going to make for a great f*cking fight."
