Purchase of Boeing aircraft does not affect Malaysia's finances, says Lim
Lim said the US$9.5bil purchase will not affect development expenditure in the 13th Malaysian Plan (13MP).
'It will not affect the debt or the fiscal deficit situation we are facing now. So, for now, everything is within our projection,' Lim said during Question Time in Parliament on Tuesday (Aug 19).
She was responding to Datuk Dr Nik Muhammad Zawawi Salleh (PN–Pasir Puteh), who asked if Malaysia's finances would be affected by the purchase.
Aminolhuda Hassan (PH–Sri Gading) then asked about steps to reduce Malaysia's debt so it would not affect the national economy.
Lim said the government has measures to reduce debt levels, including fiscal consolidation to ensure future loans are lower than current levels.
'Apart from widening the tax base, we want to optimise public spending, including rationalising diesel and RON95 subsidies, and reviewing government loans to fund certain 13MP projects.
'We have several measures to ensure Malaysia's debt levels will reduce,' Lim said.
She said as of the end of June this year, Malaysia's debt stood at RM1.3tril, or 63.9% of GDP, compared to RM1.247tril or 64.6% at the end of 2024.
Lim added that the increase in federal debt was due to the need to cover development expenditure.
'But the government isn't relying solely on debt to fund development expenditure. It is also funded by tax and non-tax revenue,' she said.
Lim said the government is confident of achieving its 3.8% fiscal deficit target to ensure debt does not exceed the statutory limit.
'During the tabling of 13MP, the government is also committed to reducing the fiscal deficit to less than 3% and debt levels to below 60% of GDP in the medium term,' she added.
Earlier this month, Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz said the additional aircraft purchase was part of reciprocal negotiations with the US.
The order includes 18 Boeing 737-8s and 12 Boeing 737-10s powered by CFM LEAP-1B engines, with an option for 30 more 737s.
Orders for hundreds of Boeing jets were announced in deals with Japan, the UAE, Indonesia, Cambodia, Bangladesh and others as part of negotiations to reduce US tariffs.
The US announced a reduction in tariffs on Malaysian exports to 19% from the previously announced 25%.

How can that be, when this issue involves a student's death and has unsettled parents nationwide?" he asked. Afnan Hamimi said the opposition had proposed various solutions, including making warden positions permanent but they were expecting a professional response from the minister. He said a few minutes from the 40 minutes allocated by the Speaker should have been used to explain the ministry's approach to bullying.

79% of requests to remove cyberbullying content approved from January till August this year, says Fahmi
KUALA LUMPUR: A total of 25,959 online content flagged as cyberbullying was removed by the authorities from January to Aug 15 this year, says Datuk Fahmi Fadzil ( pic ). According to the Communications Minister, the figure came from the 32,982 applications to remove cyberbullying-related content during that period, marking a 79% approval rate by the authorities. '25,929 content (79%) content was successfully removed for going against the Communications and Multimedia Act (Act 588) as well as present laws. 'The three platforms that recorded the highest applications were TikTok, Facebook and Tumblr,' said Fahmi during his winding up speech on the 13th Malaysian Plan (13MP) in Parliament on Wednesday (Aug 20). There were 23,651 cyberbullying content removed on TikTok, 1,738 on Facebook, Tumblr (450), others (120). 'The government views cyberbullying threats seriously and we will continue strengthening efforts to curb this through enforcement measures that are based on public complaints and close cooperation with social media platform providers, as well as the authorities, such as the police,' he said. Meanwhile, Fahmi said the Attorney General's Chambers (AGC) would appeal to the Federal Court a ruling that decriminalises offensive online remarks under Section 233 (1)(a) of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 (CMA). 'I was informed that the AGC will be filing an appeal to the federal court,' said Fahmi, who added that he would carefully review the appeal process. On Tuesday (Aug 19), the Court of Appeal ruled that the words 'offensive' and 'annoy' in Section 233 (1)(a) of the CMA were unconstitutional because it went against the protection for equality before the law and freedom of speech under Article 8 and 10 the Federal Constitution. A three-member bench led by Federal Court judge Datuk Lee Swee Seng, in a unanimous decision struck down part of the provision, which criminalises the online transmission of comments deemed offensive or intended to annoy.

Communications Ministry To Conduct Study On Music Industry Development, Issues And Challenges
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 20 (Bernama) -- The Ministry of Communications is implementing a Music Industry Development Study to examine issues, challenges and proposed action plans towards empowering the sustainable and dynamic development of the Malaysian music industry. Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil said the study is also refining business models, governance, staffing and specific laws that can support the development of the industry. 'For music, we currently do not have a specific act, therefore the ministry is looking into the best way to ensure that an act is drafted to ensure the welfare, sustainability and development of the music industry. 'We are looking into it and this study also takes into account the views and input of music industry players through the Music Industry Protem Committee,' he said when winding up the debate on the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP) motion for the Ministry of Communications at the Dewan Rakyat today. He said a total of 20 members of the Music Industry Protem Committee had been appointed, from various fields including composers, lyricists, recording companies or studios, singers, musicians, Collective Management Organisations (CMOs), publishing companies, association representatives, academicians and event management. Fahmi said the results of the study would be used as input in determining the availability and need for a specific body to regulate the development of the music industry or to include the music industry in the functions of existing agencies or regulatory bodies. Regarding the proposed amendments to the National Film Development Corporation of Malaysia Act (Finas) 1981 (Act 244), Fahmi said it is expected to be tabled in the upcoming Parliament meeting scheduled for this October. He said the process of improving the act includes expanding the scope of regulation, governance, functions and enforcement aspects of the act. Among the proposed amendments under Act 244 is related to the membership of Finas Corporation Members, which falls under the scope of governance which aims to improve the membership structure so that it consists of experienced local film industry players, has an excellent record of achievement in the field of local film and has credibility in fighting for the welfare of industry players.
