Indiana Fever update Caitlin Clark injury status, availability vs New York Liberty

Yahoo3 days ago
With the 2025 WNBA All-Star break concluded, the Indiana Fever provided an injury status update to star Caitlin Clark ahead of their Tuesday night game against the New York Liberty from the Barclays Center in Brooklyn.
Clark, who suffered a right groin injury late in the Fever's July 15 victory over the Connecticut Sun, missed Indiana's blowout loss against the Liberty last Wednesday and opted out of All-Star weekend to focus on her recovery.
According to coach Stephanie White, the Fever do not anticipate Clark being available when they take the floor in Brooklyn on Tuesday.
"I haven't seen C (Clark) since the game last night, but I think she's progressing. I think that we're continuing to address everything that needs to be addressed. She's going to see some doctors and get some more tests done early in the week.
"I don't expect her to be available on Tuesday, so we're just going to continue to take it one day at a time and let her get her evaluation early this week. Once we've done that, hopefully we'll have more of a clear mind of what it looks like," White said of Clark's status.
With Clark most likely unavailable for Indiana, the team will need to rely heavily on Kelsey Mitchell and Aliyah Boston to bear the load on offense and get contributions off the bench.
Indiana's Tuesday night clash with New York will tip off at 7 p.m. CT and will be carried on ESPN.

Eugenio Suárez says X-rays were negative after he was hit on index finger by pitch against Tigers

DETROIT (AP) — Arizona Diamondbacks All-Star third baseman Eugenio Suárez hopes he avoided major injury when he was hit in the right index finger by a pitch late in Monday night's 5-1 loss to the Detroit Tigers. Suárez, who is a candidate to be traded to a contender, was hit by a 95.6 mph sinker from Will Vest in the ninth inning. He immediately doubled over in pain and quickly left the field. 'The good news is that the X-rays were negative, but it still obviously hurt,' said Suárez, who was not bending the finger. 'There are more tests scheduled for (Tuesday) and we will go from there. I'll come back as quickly as I can.' The 34-year-old is hitting .247 with 36 homers and 87 RBIs in 104 games this season — the seventh time he has hit at least 30 homers in the last eight full seasons. 'He's very tough and he never even winces,' Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo said. 'When he reacts like that, you know it isn't good.' Lovullo said he didn't blame Vest. 'I don't think there was any intent there,' Lovullo said. 'He's one of the most impressive hitters in MLB and you don't want to take those type of players off the field.' The Diamondbacks are 51-56 and have already signaled they will be sellers at the deadline. One of the teams believed to be interested in Suárez is the Tigers. The Venezuelan was signed by Detroit at age 17 and made his debut for the club in 2014 before being traded to Cincinnati after that season. ___ AP MLB: Dave Hogg, The Associated Press

Blue Jays' George Springer struck in head by 96 mph pitch, leaves Orioles game

BALTIMORE - Toronto Blue Jays outfielder George Springer was struck in the head by a 96 mph sinker in the ninth inning and was knocked out for about a minute before regaining his faculties and exiting the Camden Yards field on Monday, July 28. Springer, 35, was struck by a pitch thrown by Baltimore Orioles rookie right-hander Kade Strowd. The pitch came up and in on Springer and struck him in the left ear flap of his batting helmet, which was knocked several feet away as Springer crumpled to the ground. Springer lay motionless for a minute, rose to his knees and after about two minutes was on his feet. Diamondbacks: Eugenio Suarez drilled by pitch, exits game vs. Tigers Blue Jays manager John Schneider said Springer was fortunate that the pitch struck his shoulder and then his helmet, lessening the blow to the head. He said Springer was communicative with him and a trainer as he lay face down in the batter's box. Springer was being evaluated by a Blue Jays doctor after the game. The outfielder is enjoying a renaissance season, batting .291 with 18 homers and an .889 OPS. Strowd completed the ninth inning to finish the Orioles' 11-4 victory.
