PUNTERS cried 'cheat' as Kieran Shoemark was denied a fairytale win after a controversial stewards' enquiry - that saw bookies pay out on the runner-up.
It looked like Shoemark, who earlier in the week lost his job as John & Thady Gosden's No1 rider, had won the French 1000 Guineas on syndicate horse Shes Perfect.

The Charlie Fellowes-trained filly, sent off 18-1, rallied strongly in the final furlong-and-a-half after being headed when it got to crunch time.
She was first past the post and appeared to have nabbed the £250,000 first-place prize by a nose at Longchamp racecourse in Paris.
Photos were even taken of overjoyed connections celebrating their big win.
Until a stewards' enquiry was launched soon after the finish following an objection from former Derby-winning rider Mickael Barzalona, jockey of runner-up Zarigana.
It was tricky to see with the naked eye in real time, but, despite Shoemark doing all he could to keep Shes Perfect on a true line, she edged to her left.
That sparked a domino effect that saw Ryan Moore on Exactly short of room, bumping into the path of 4-5 fav Zarigana, who ran in the famous Aga Khan silks forever associated with Shergar.
Incredibly, Barzalona also dropped his whip, meaning he resorted to smacking his filly with his hand for the final, crucial few yards.
Zarigana was forced off her true line ever so slightly - whether it was enough to make a difference to the result is a topic of hot debate.
But stewards clearly thought it was, ultimately deciding to demote Shes Perfect to second and a cheque of 'only' £100,000.
Punters were up in arms over the decision, with a report from the course saying the owners were left 'visibly shaken'.
To his credit, Zarigana's trainer Francis-Henri Graffard said it was not the way he wanted to win.
But the result ultimately stood, robbing Fellowes of his first Group 1, the British syndicate a dream win and Shoemark redemption after the week from hell.
Fellowes said: "We came so close. It's heartbreaking because I really needed a big win. Winning a Classic - that's the dream of my life."
While Graffard said: "We don't like winning races this way, and I feel sorry for the Shes Perfect team.
"But this is racing. To be honest, my filly was unbalanced at the worst possible moment, and at the end, we're only talking about a nose.
"I'm really happy for Zarigana.
"But it's hard to feel joy, I feel more relief."
A report in the Racing Post said cries of 'cheat' and 'disgrace' rang around the winner's enclosure afterwards.
While a load of punters were up in arms at the result afterwards - although others thought the reversal of places was justified.
Those punters who bet on the race with Paddy Power and BoyleSports were winners either way, as they paid out as winners both Zarigana and Shes Perfect.

Alan Roberts reflects on 'eventful' start after opening leg crash

When Alan Roberts dreamed about the start of The Ocean Race Europe, a crash to kick off leg one that left a huge hole in his boat would have been pretty much the nightmare scenario. But that is exactly what the 35-year-old Southampton sailor had to deal with in Kiel at the start of the 4,500-nautical-mile multi-stage offshore race. A collision with a competitor knocked Team Holcim – PRB out of the opening leg of the race, but despite suffering serious damage, they have been able to recover and will re-join the race in Portsmouth for the second leg. Roberts explained: 'It's been eventful so far. We had the incident at the start of leg one, we had a collision with another boat, which was pretty devastating. 'We had a pretty big hole in the hull, about two metres high and one metre wide, so it was pretty significant. We were taking water on board, but it could have been a lot worse, it probably could have sunk the boat. 'Luckily, we reacted pretty quickly. We have managed to fix it, we are in good shape now and back up to 100 per cent, but if the collision had been half a metre further forward, we would have lost the mast, if it had been 20 centimetres further down on the hull, we'd have lost the boat. It hit right in the spot where it had the least impact. 'It hasn't been the most restful time, but we're glad to be back in the race because it could have been a lot worse.' After suffering the collision, it was all systems go for the team, with each member settling into their role to try to ensure the race was not over almost as soon as it had begun. For Roberts, whose background is in naval architecture and boat building, that meant finding the solution to getting the boat back in the water as soon as possible. While he focused on repairing the boat, others looked ahead to the weather conditions for leg two, and a further group was tasked with mounting a protest over the incident. That will be heard in Spain by an international jury, but in the meantime, Team Holcim – PRB are looking to achieve their ambitious goals for the race. Roberts said: 'We're back at 100 per cent, so we are good to go. We should be a bit fresher than the other teams. It allows us a bit of extra energy, but it's going to be full on because the fleet is pretty close. 'There will be quite a bit of breeze for the first 24 hours or so as we sail across the English Channel towards France. We're back to our original goal which is not just to take part but to win. We're going to see what we can do in this leg.' Seven international teams, seven stopovers, 4,500 nautical miles, racing for the ocean. The Ocean Race Europe takes place 10 - 21 September 2025 and features seven British sailors across the fleet.

Q&A: What next for rising star Moses Itauma after blowing away Dillian Whyte?

Whyte was expected to provide a stern test for the 20-year-old, but instead became the latest boxer to be steamrolled by one of the most exciting names in the blue-riband division. Here, the PA news agency takes a look at what lies ahead for Itauma and if he really is a world heavyweight champion in waiting. Is Moses the real deal? 'Moses would beat Usyk now' 👀@Tyson_Fury believes Moses Itauma is the real deal 🤝 — Queensberry Promotions (@Queensberry) August 17, 2025 Well, this was a statement result for the Chatham southpaw – no matter the level of Whyte, who was fighting on the biggest stage for the first time since 2022. Itauma was predicted to win in Riyadh but not as convincingly as he managed against a former world title contender. Even though the challenge in the ring only last 119 seconds, Itauma was tested during fight week. Whyte attempted to get under his skin during a prickly face-off and they also traded verbal blows at a press conference. But Itauma stayed cool, calm and collected on his first time headlining before letting his fists do the talking, just like in notable victories over Demsey McKean and Mariusz Wach. Can he handle Usyk? Itauma's triumph on Saturday certainly caught the eye of Tyson Fury, who immediately insisted the Briton would beat Oleksandr Usyk – and the name of undisputed world heavyweight champion Usyk continues to be linked with Itauma. Straight after Usyk demolished Daniel Dubois last month, Saudi boxing chief Turki Alalshikh called for the Ukrainian great to fight Itauma next. A recent 40-minute media session for Itauma with British press also saw him thrown a number of questions on Usyk. Itauma claimed that he would lose nothing from fighting Usyk now, but will Queensberry promoter Frank Warren put his young prospect in with a seasoned veteran after only 13 professional fights? Even if the answer is yes, Usyk has other contenders in the queue ahead of Itauma. 'I don't want to call out Usyk because I don't believe I deserve the opportunity – but guys that do deserve the opportunity, I want to fight those lot,' Itauma said. So, who next for Itauma? Itauma, right, has won 13 professional fights Itauma will wait with bated breath to discover Usyk's next move. Usyk has been ordered to fight WBO interim champion Joseph Parker next but has asked for an extension to negotiations. There is a very feasible scenario where Usyk vacates his WBO belt – and therefore loses undisputed status – to fight Fury or someone else, and opens the door for Itauma to get a world title shot in 2026. With Itauma the current number one with WBO, he would be first in line to profit if Usyk relinquishes that belt as a bout with Parker would be quickly arranged. Agit Kabayel, currently WBC interim champion, is a candidate for Itauma. There is also the prospect of another domestic affair, with Derek Chisora and Lawrence Okolie ringside in Riyadh, but after this latest devastating display, Itauma may have his sights set on bigger and better opponents on the grandest of stages.
