New EU delegation to meet Haftar after previous one expelled
The decision was made during a meeting between Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, and Maltese Prime Minister Robert Abela, on the sidelines of the 'Ukraine Recovery Conference' hosted in the Italian capital, Rome, on Thursday, according to Euronews.
According to Euronews, the leaders emphasized the importance of 're-engaging with Libya' as a key partner on issues of migration, energy, and regional security. They also stressed the need to revive the 'Team Europe' initiative by sending a new diplomatic delegation, including representatives from the European Commission, as well as ministers from Mediterranean EU countries — Greece, Italy, and Malta.
This European move comes after rising tensions between the EU mission and the parallel government and Haftar's forces, following their refusal on July 8 to receive EU Commissioner for Migration Magnus Brunner and the interior ministers of Italy, Greece, and Malta. Their aircraft had landed at Benghazi International Airport that evening, but Haftar had conditioned the meeting on the presence of ministers from the parallel government — a demand the delegation refused. Dbeibah summons EU and allied envoys over plans to visit eastern Libya
Prime Minister Abdulhamid Dbeibah summoned four European ambassadors on Wednesday to seek clarification over the EU's stance on the rival administration in eastern Libya, amid reports of a possible diplomatic visit to the region. According to Italy's Nova news agency, the envoys summoned included EU Ambassador Nicola Orlando, Italian Ambassador Gianluca Alberini, Greek Ambassador Nikolaos Garilidis, and Maltese Ambassador Charles Saliba. The move comes as speculation grows that the diplomats are planning a visit to Benghazi, the stronghold of eastern commander Khalifa Haftar and seat of the parallel government. Separately, UK Minister for the Middle East, Hamish Falconer, cancelled a scheduled visit to Benghazi after reportedly rejecting a condition set by Haftar — that members of the eastern-based government be present at the meeting. The same demand is believed to have derailed a joint visit by the foreign ministers of Malta, Italy, and Greece on 8 July. Tags: PM Dbeibah
