After 36 years, ESPN's ‘Sunday Night Baseball' enters its final season (for now)

New York Times28-03-2025
Ellis Boyd Redding, the wise man from 'The Shawshank Redemption' (played by Morgan Freeman), famously proclaimed that hope is a dangerous thing and can drive a man insane. But Karl Ravech, the play-by-play voice of ESPN's 'Sunday Night Baseball' and a broadcaster who has been connected to ESPN's baseball coverage since 1995, the year after 'Shawshank' came out, has not lost hope that a partnership between ESPN and Major League Baseball can continue.
Here is the situation today: Earlier this month, ESPN informed MLB it was opting out of the final three years (2026-28) of its $550 million per season contract with baseball after this year. As part of the dissolution, MLB commissioner Rob Manfred wrote in a memo obtained by The Athletic's Evan Drellich that the league has 'not been pleased with the minimal coverage that MLB has received on ESPN's platforms over the past several years outside of the actual live game coverage.'
Under this backdrop, ESPN begins its 36th and final (for now) season of 'Sunday Night Baseball.' Ravech, analysts David Cone and Eduardo Pérez and reporter Buster Olney will be in San Diego on Sunday to call Braves-Padres at 7 p.m. ET. (The pregame 'Baseball Tonight: Sunday Night Countdown' airs an hour earlier, featuring Kevin Connors, Tim Kurkjian and senior MLB insider Jeff Passan.)
Where does Ravech's optimism come from, given ESPN's opt-out and Manfred's memo, which referred to ESPN as a 'shrinking platform'? Ravech says the source is ESPN's upcoming debut of Flagship, the working name of the direct-to-consumer product expected to be launched around late August. ESPN Flagship will give consumers access to all of the network's programming without needing other subscriptions.
'When you think about the entities that are on that Flagship, I don't want to say it is required, but my goodness if you're a sports fan, you're gonna want to have it,' Ravech said. 'If the sports fan in general wants the Super Bowl, the NFL, the NBA, tennis, golf, college championships, the NHL, Stanley Cup, basically every single color in the crayon box, it would behoove any other sport to want to be on that platform.'
History suggests that once the dam breaks between media partners, it breaks. The Athletic's Andrew Marchand reported there is a growing expectation that MLB could sell the ESPN package in three parts, with Fox Sports emerging as a potential favorite for the Home Run Derby and NBC a contender for Sunday nights.
The NBC part is interesting because, as I wrote last July, NBC/Peacock has big plans for an NBA 'Sunday Night Basketball' telecast to resemble its NFL 'Sunday Night Football' franchise, and executives there really want to own that night in the minds of sports fans. ESPN chairman Jimmy Pitaro continues to say he remains interested in re-engaging in a conversation with baseball if the price is right.
'I've been there for 30-some odd years and clearly the evolution and the popularity of the NFL, I think certain things dictate coverage,' Ravech said. 'It's a ratings-driven business. I just look at it as a consumer of sports on television and elsewhere. Who else provides any more coverage of baseball, with the exception of the MLB Network, than ESPN does? I'm not certain that there's another place that does it as frequently, certainly as well on Sundays with Baseball Tonight and the Sunday Night Baseball game, as ESPN.
'People do watch us. Our ratings have gone up on Sunday night consistently over the years, which is a really hard thing to do. Which to me means that we're doing something right to attract a baseball fan. And I think to the credit of baseball, the game is better. The sport is in a better place than it's been with the rule changes.'
One thing the Sunday Night Baseball crew made clear this week is that this season will not be a nostalgia tour, which is what viewers saw with TNT and the NBA.
'We're not going in thinking like this is it,' lead Sunday Night Baseball producer Andy Jacobson said. 'We're looking to be great every week. I think our biggest challenge is being a national broadcast on such a regionalized sport. Who is our fan base? Who's coming in to watch every Sunday? What we strive to do is be different than every other telecast that's out there, whether it is the mic'd up stuff or David Cone watching Justin Verlander warm up for a start from a perch right above the bullpen. We're constantly looking for ways to bring the viewer places that they never get a chance to go.'
'As far as the long-term future, we try to bring value,' Cone said. 'I don't assess value — that's above my pay grade. But if we keep bringing value, we feel like we're gonna continue to sell ourselves as a group, and there'll be a place for that kind of value, a place for us in the future.'
Brian Lawlor, the president of Scripps Sports, told me this week that Scripps has had productive conversations with the WNBA about a long-term deal for ION to remain as the national carrier for the WNBA on Friday nights. The current deal expires at the end of the 2025 season. Lawlor said he hopes a new deal happens during this WNBA season. Last year, WNBA games on ION averaged 670,000 (a 133 percent increase from 2023), and they had seven telecasts that exceeded an average of 1 million viewers.
'When (the NBA/WNBA) went to market with their rights, they did bundle up some of their rights with all the other networks, but what they did not bundle in was the Friday night rights,' Lawlor said. 'They protected that because of the success we had and what we built. We are still in our original contract with them for the rights to Friday nights, but our long-term expectation is we are going to be the home for the WNBA across the entire country for every game on Fridays.'
An interesting stat: ION says it delivered the largest percentage of female audience of any network airing WNBA games this season — 50 percent of its WNBA audience was female.
Through the first two rounds of the men's tournament, games on CBS, TBS, TNT and truTV averaged 9.4 million viewers. That's the highest number for the opening round of the tournament in 32 years. As always, the historical comparisons are not apples to apples these days, given Nielsen measuring out-of-home viewership with better accuracy. And as Austin Karp of Sports Business Journal noted, the 9.4 million viewers is an average combined across four networks. The average for each game so far on CBS/TNT/TBS/truTV is 3.1 million viewers. But a great start for the chalky men's tournament.
Through two rounds, the 2025 women's Division I basketball tournament is averaging 602,000 viewers across ABC, ESPN, ESPN2 and ESPNU, the second-highest audience through this point since 2009. The second round of the women's tournament averaged 982,000 viewers, the second most-watched second round on record behind the Caitlin Clark-infused 1.4 million viewer average last year.
Second round viewership was up 60 percent from 2023. The first round of the women's tournament averaged 367,000 viewers. That's down 22 percent from 471,000 last year (as expected without Clark) but up 43 percent from 2023.
As baseball fans know, MLB honors Jackie Robinson each year on April 15 to celebrate the day in 1947 that he broke baseball's color barrier. The league's website states: 'Every year on April 15, Baseball honors Jackie's legacy by celebrating his life, values and accomplishments. The extensive and unified League-wide show of support has included retiring Jackie's number throughout the Majors in 1997; dedicating April 15 as Jackie Robinson Day each year since 2004; and requesting that every player and all on-field personnel wear his No. 42 during games scheduled on Jackie Robinson Day since 2009.'
Given how much MLB features Robinson in external PR, the league's choice to not write anything after a webpage about Robinson's time serving in the U.S. Army was removed from the Department of Defense's website last week really stands out. The story was taken down during a purge of government web content spotlighting historical contributions by women and minority groups following President Donald Trump's executive order to end federal support for diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) programs. It was eventually restored following a public outcry.
Few would expect a fire-and-brimstone opinion column on a league-owned site, especially given the politics at play, but MLB.com readers deserved a straight news story on the day it occurred, considering Robinson's importance to professional baseball. I'll be thinking about that on April 15.
There is a lot of troubling news in the world today, so it's important to highlight pieces that can lift you to a better place. If you missed it, I highly encourage you to read this remarkable piece from Jon Krawczynski on the Minnesota Timberwolves' decision to start Joe Ingles so his autistic son could see him play.

NFL preseason live updates: Aaron Rodgers won't play a snap for Steelers this preseason

[NFL top storylines | NFL team feeds | NFL camp/preseason live blog] We won't get our first in-game glimpse of Aaron Rodgers as the Pittsburgh Steelers' starting quarterback until Week 1. Head coach Mike Tomlin told media Tuesday that Rodgers will sit out the preseason finale Thursday against the Carolina Panthers, along with wide receiver DK Metcalf, who also hasn't played this preseason. Tomlin also said Steelers veterans T.J. Watt and Cam Heyward, who participated in team drills Tuesday amid his contract dispute, won't play Thursday. [Join or create a Yahoo Fantasy Football league for the 2025 NFL season] Rodgers not playing in the preseason is nothing new for him, or veteran quarterbacks really. He's only played one preseason game since 2018, for the New York Jets in 2023 as he was acclimating to a new team. It might have made sense for Rodgers to play at least a series for Pittsburgh this month, given questions over the schematic fit with offensive coordinator Arthur Smith. Yahoo Sports' Nate Tice broke down the partnership on Football 301's AFC North preview, and noted Rodgers isn't mobile anymore, doesn't like to throw over the middle of the field where more of the big-play opportunities are, and likes to take his time at the line of scrimmage with very little pre-snap motion, all of which conflicts on some level with what Smith has traditionally wanted his offenses to do. That said, Rodgers has spoken fondly of the relationship thus far between himself and Smith, and Smith has said he's constructing the offense around Rodgers' skill set. And Tomlin gave a straight answer for why he was comfortable with Rodgers not playing in preseason. "I'm comfortable with what I've seen out here," he said, via NFL Network. There you have it. We'll see Rodgers play for the Steelers in Week 1 — at the Jets, as it happens. NFL top storylines Colts name Daniel Jones starting QB over Anthony Richardson: Indianapolis Colts head coach Shane Steichen told reporters Tuesday that his decision to go with Daniel Jones isn't just a Week 1 arrangement. "He's the starting quarterback for the season,' Steichen said. "I don't want to have a short leash on that." So where does that leave Anthony Richardson Sr.? Well, the Colts made a huge gamble on him in the draft, and it could still pay off down the road. It's not like Jones is a lock to keep the job all season. But the Colts' brain trust of Steichen and GM Chris Ballard need to win now to keep their jobs, and Richardson has struggled to do that. Trey Hendrickson, Bengals still at odds over guaranteed money: Trey Hendrickson spoke to ESPN about his contract situation during Monday night's preseason game vs. the Commanders, and while he offered some hope about a future deal, he made it clear there's still one major issue preventing him from agreeing to a deal. The star pass rusher said he and the Bengals are close on annual salary and length of his next contract, but the team's unwillingness to give him guaranteed money remains the sticking point. The Bengals are reportedly willing to guarantee money for one year of Hendrickson's next contract, but won't extend the guarantees beyond that. Until they are willing to grant that, it sounds like Hendrickson is willing to remain on the sideline. Commanders RB Brian Robinson Jr. appears to be on his way out: With Brian Robinson Jr. sidelined amid trade rumors, Washington ran roughshod over a porous Bengals defense as both teams played their starters early. The Commanders exploded for a four-play, 73-yard touchdown drive on their opening possession without throwing a pass. Running back Chris Rodriguez broke free for a 40-yard run to set up quarterback Jayden Daniels for a 14-yard touchdown scramble through and past multiple hapless Bengals defenders. Then came Jacory Croskey-Merritt's time to shine. The seventh-round rookie out of Arizona took the starring role on Washington's second drive with 32 rushing yards as the Commanders needed just three plays to score their second touchdown of the game. Croskey-Merritt capped the drive with a 27-yard touchdown run. You've been digesting plenty of Yahoo rankings and checking in on our draft kit to get the latest analysis. But you're still itching to get more of an advantage over your opponents. Not to worry, we've got a full recap of Harmon's AMA, where he answered fantasy football questions from Yahoo Fantasy Plus subscribers who are preparing for the season. Fantasy Football AMA Recap Question: My half-PPR league is always taking RBs early and I have the first pick in the draft. I like Ja'Marr Chase more than Bijan Robinson but I'm scared about losing out on positional value since I feel like it's easier to find WRs later in the draft. What should I do? Answer: Total personal preference there. Both great options that I have ranked first and second overall. If you wanna take Bijan, I won't talk you out of it. Question: My long-time, 10-team friends and family league is finally interested in going Superflex. Is there really a difference between SF and 2 QB since everyone will likely play a QB at the Superflex spot anyway? Also, what is the optimal positional setup for a Superflex league, in your opinion? Answer: You are almost certainly going to end up playing the QB there for sure. However, I like it more bc then if there are injuries or bye week chaos, you can at least drop someone in the flex spot if you're out of QBs and not take the 0. I like to grab one elite QB and then try to play a couple options in the Superflex spot. Question: I'm in a full-PPR, 12-team league (1QB), drafting seventh. I think that I can exploit this spot to gain an edge at a non-WR/RB position, so what strategy has the most upside this year: drafting Brock Bowers/Trey McBride in Round 2 and waiting on QB or drafting a top-four QB in Round 3 and waiting on TE? Or is it to grab both and fill in the gaps at WR/RB later? Answer: I've personally been opting to take the elite QB in Round 3, don't love the other options in that round, over elite TE in Round 2. Question: Should Bengals QB Joe Burrow be going top five in Superflex drafts? Answer: Yes, I think all of the top-five QBs should be taken top five in SF but then there's a dropoff and that's where the RB/WR picks should come in. Question: How does it look for Jets RB Breece Hall and Commanders RB Brian Robinson Jr.? I have them in my 10-team Half-PPR Superflex league. Answer: It looks pretty bad for B-Rob. Maybe he gets bailed out with a good landing spot via trade but the floor is strikingly low now. I'd probably not draft him at this moment. Question: With the news about Daniel Jones being named the Colts' starting QB, what do you think the fantasy football outlook is for QB Anthony Richardson moving forward? Answer: He will be useful if/when he plays. And there's next to no shot Jones holds that job all season. Richardson should probably be rostered in Superflex and 2QB but not in other formats. QB is so deep and he's not a good enough passer for me to be that sold on the top-10 ceiling others imagine. Question: Do you think QB Jaxson Dart takes over the starting job for the Giants this season and what does he look like scoring-wise if so? Answer: He will get starts this year. I've been looking at Week 7 after a TNF game against the Eagles so they have that "mini-bye" to get him ready. Their schedule is brutal this year, but they have to get him ready at some point. I don't see him being anything more than a QB2 candidate in Superflex but is a better runner than credited. Question: I'm drafting at pick No. 5 in a 12-team, Half-PPR league. Thinking of taking Justin Jefferson or one of the top RBs if they fall to me. What's a good general draft strategy from where I'm picking? Answer: If all of the top three backs are gone, then yes, I'm looking at JJ in that spot. Next highest ranked RB for me is Christian McCaffrey, so gotta be open to risk there of course. I think that middle of each round will provide good options to make sure you get two RBs in the first four rounds. Question: Who are your top sleeper RBs and WRs in deep leagues? Answer: Panthers WR Jalen Coker is my favorite true deep sleeper at WR. Good player in a potentially ascending offense. For RB, Jets RB Braelon Allen still goes well outside the top-120 picks, same with Commanders rookie RB Jacory "Bill" Croskey-Merritt, too. Bills RB Ray Davis if anything ever happens to James Cook. Question: In most mock drafts that I've done this year I've had a decent amount of RBs fall to me in Round 3. Should I avoid drafting RBs in the first two rounds? Answer: Depends who is on the board at each of your picks. I don't love my teams that don't have at least one RB through those two rounds and I think there is a dropoff after Round 4 or 5 at the position. Question: I plan on taking Bijan Robinson with the 1.01 in a 14-team league. Who do I target at the 2/3 turn? Half-PPR, by the way. Answer: I'd look at Ladd McConkey or A.J. Brown at WR if they're there. Chase Brown is a smash as your RB2 if available. If I don't love the RB or WR options I'm very happy taking one of the top-three QBs. Question: Are you concerned about Bijan potentially not catching a lot of passes due to Falcons QB Michael Penix's tendencies? Answer: Actually, I think that because Penix isn't a scrambler (just four in three games last year) he'll get to those checkdowns to Bijan pretty often. Question: Do you think Brandon Aiyuk's injury, since it was so bad, will hamper his ability to do what makes him special? Short-term for this season and long-term for his career? Answer: I don't expect to see Aiyuk at his best until the very end of this season, if not even into 2026. Multi-ligament tear midseason like that is brutal Question: Interesting, I usually wait to go after a QB. When you go for a QB early who do you usually target for TE? Answer: TUCKER KRAFT BABY. 🎯 Ready to unlock your full fantasy potential? Remember, spots in the Discord channel are limited to Yahoo Fantasy Plus subscribers.
