2,000 attend 'Malaysia Bangkit Untuk Gaza' rally at Dataran Merdeka
The rally, which began at 4pm, brought together various segments of society and included participants from 20 non-governmental organisations (NGOs) from across the country.
A Harian Metro observation found that attendees started marching towards Dataran Merdeka from nearby areas, such as Masjid Jamek, Masjid Negara, and city-centre shopping malls, from 5pm. They carried Palestinian flags and banners condemning Zionist aggression.
Among those who attended were Malaysian Muslim Consumers Association (PPIM) chief activist, Datuk Nadzim Johan; politician Chua Tian Chang; and Terengganu Menteri Besar's Office special officer for non-Islamic affairs, Dr Balachandran Gopal Krishnan.
Police kept a close watch on the peaceful assembly, closing major roads leading to Dataran Merdeka to ensure the event's smooth and safe progression.
The event featured nasyid performances, poetry, and a flash mob in the opening session. Other segments included speeches and performances by young people, followed by Maghrib prayers, Solat Hajat, and special prayers (munajat), as well as a forum on Gaza.
A special screening on the suffering of the people in Gaza was also held before speeches by political figures, NGOs, and international representatives, concluding with the reading of the Malaysia For Palestine Declaration.
Yesterday, Harian Metro reported that police expected 5,000 people to attend the rally at Dataran Merdeka. The Dang Wangi District Police Chief, Assistant Commissioner Sulizmie Affendy Sulaiman, said attendees from NGOs, universities, and the public would gather at three main locations, Masjid Negara, Masjid Jamek Sultan Abdul Samad, and Sogo, before moving to Dataran Merdeka.
According to international media reports, Israel has closed all crossings into the Gaza Strip since March 2, 2025, blocking the entry of most food and medical aid and causing widespread famine.
The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) warned that malnutrition rates among children under five have doubled between March and June due to the ongoing blockade.

Investigation papers on Kepala Batas upside-down flag incident handed over to AGC, says the police
GEORGE TOWN: The investigation papers on an incident involving a man seen raising an upside-down Malaysian flag have been submitted to the Attorney General's Chambers, says Asst Comm Anuar Abd Rahman. The North Seberang Perai OCPD added that once given the directive, the police will charge the man. "There is one man who is the boss of the company. We are just waiting for the orders. "If it is given today, we will charge him tomorrow," he told the media after the hand-over ceremony of the new Penang police chief at the Senior Officers' Mess of the Royal Malaysia Police in Jalan Batu Gantung here on Monday (Aug 11). ACP Anuar said the man, who was arrested, is out on police bail. "We only arrested one person but recorded statements from around 10 people related to this case," he said. It was reported on Saturday (Aug 9) that the police were investigating an incident involving footage of a man seen raising an upside-down Malaysian flag. The footage is believed to have been recorded in Kepala Batas. It prompted an individual to lodge a report at the Kepala Batas police station at about 12.30pm on Saturday (Aug 9). ACP Anuar had said the case was being investigated under Section 5 of the Emblems and Names (Prevention of Improper Use) Act 1963, Section 14 of the Minor Offences Act 1955 and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1988. The 21-second video went viral showing two men at a hardware shop here apparently intentionally displaying and flying the Jalur Gemilang upside down, drawing condemnation from Internet users. Following that, several non-governmental organisations and political parties, as well as Bertam assemblyman Datuk Seri Reezal Merican Naina Merican lodged police reports. Reezal Merican said the country has laws to protect the dignity and symbols of the nation, and therefore, proper investigations and action must be taken to ensure such incidents do not recur.

Australia to recognise Palestinian state at UN General Assembly
CANBERRA: Australia will formally recognise a Palestinian state during the United Nations General Assembly session in September, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese confirmed. The announcement marks a significant shift in Australia's Middle East policy amid ongoing regional conflicts. Albanese emphasised that a two-state solution remains the only viable path to lasting peace in the region. He stated that temporary peace agreements would continue unless both Israeli and Palestinian statehood achieved permanent recognition. The decision aligns Australia with several Western nations advocating Palestinian statehood following Israel's military response to Hamas' 2023 attacks. France, Britain and Canada have similarly moved towards recognising Palestinian sovereignty in recent months. Albanese highlighted Australia's commitment to working with global partners to realise Palestinian self-determination. The prime minister clarified that Australia's recognition hinges on assurances excluding Hamas from any future Palestinian governance structure. Palestinian Authority leaders provided written guarantees distancing themselves from the militant group controlling Gaza since 2007. Israel's government reacted sharply to Australia's announcement, with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu condemning the move as counterproductive. Netanyahu argued that premature recognition would escalate regional tensions rather than foster reconciliation. Humanitarian concerns in Gaza influenced Australia's decision, with Albanese criticising Israel's blockade restricting aid deliveries. Over two million Palestinians face severe food shortages and collapsing infrastructure after nearly two years of conflict. New Zealand indicated it may follow Australia's lead, with Foreign Minister Winston Peters calling recognition inevitable. The Gaza health ministry reports more than 61,000 Palestinian deaths since hostilities began in October 2023. Hamas' initial attack killed 1,219 Israelis according to official figures verified by international observers. Australia's stance reflects growing global impatience with stalled peace negotiations and worsening civilian suffering. The UN General Assembly session in September will provide a platform for broader international coordination on Palestinian statehood. – AFP
