Preseason Game Between Lions and Falcons Ends Early After Serious Injury

Detroit safety Morice Norris was attended to for about 20 minutes and taken off the field in an ambulance during the Lions' preseason game Friday night against Atlanta, with the game ending with 6:31 to go after the players let the clock run.
Norris was hurt with 14:50 to go trying to tackle Nathan Carter. There was no immediate report on the injury.
When play resumed, Falcons quarterback Emory Jones took a snap and then held the ball as players from both teams stood at the line of scrimmage and the clock continued to run. Finally, with 6:31 left, an official announced the game had been suspended "per New York."
The Lions led 17-10 when played was stopped.
Earlier, Hendon Hooker lost two fumbles in a start that did not last as long as expected, hurting his hopes to win Detroit's backup quarterback job as Kyle Allen threw two touchdown passes to lead the Lions.
Hooker started and was expected to play the full first half. Instead, he lost a fumble on Detroit's opening drive and then lost another fumble in the second quarter. Detroit coach Dan Campbell immediately turned to Allen.

Allen responded by completing a 68-yard pass to Jackson Meeks before throwing an 11-yard touchdown pass to Isaac TeSlaa, a rookie from Arkansas who took advantage of his 6-foot-4 frame to make the leaping catch over Atlanta nickel back Dee Alford.
Looking to Stick
The Falcons held out starting quarterback Michael Penix Jr. and backup Kirk Cousins. Easton Stick made a strong bid to win the No. 3 job by completing 15 of 18 passes for 159 yards, including a 13-yard scoring pass to Chris Blair late in the first half.
Emory Jones played the second half for Atlanta.
Top draft picks get in the game
Falcons rookie edge rusher Jalon Walker, who returned to practice on Monday after missing much of the opening week of training camp with a minor hamstring injury, started. Atlanta's other first-round pick, edge rusher James Pearce Jr., also started.
Walker, Pearce and veteran Leonard Floyd are expected to boost a pass rush that finished 31st in sacks last season.
Detroit's top two draft picks, defensive lineman Tyleik Williams and right guard Tate Rutledge, also played.
The Lions' defense is adjusting after second-year cornerback Ennis Rakestraw Jr. was placed on injured reserve on Thursday with a season-ending shoulder injury.

Falcons: Play another home game next Friday against Tennessee following joint practices with the Titans at the Falcons' complex next week.

But I think he has a chance to be a big-time talent in the league. So, we're going to hold him to a high standard. I'm really happy with him, the way he's played. But we're going to hold him to a standard of excellence that I think he's capable of reaching." After reeling in each of his two targets for 24 yards in Pittsburgh's Week 1 preseason matchup against the Jacksonville Jaguars, Wilson tallied two receptions once more in its Week 2 preseason matchup against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, with them going for a combined 72 yards, those being 42- and 30-yard pickups. Wilson only appeared in one game in his 2024 rookie campaign due to ankle and hamstring injuries. Pittsburgh selected the receiver with the No. 84 pick in the 2024 NFL Draft out of Michigan, whom he helped win the National Championship in his 2023 senior season. ADVERTISEMENT In said championship season (2023), Wilson totaled 48 receptions for 789 yards (16.4 yards per reception) and 12 touchdowns, leading the Wolverines in all four categories. Wilson is part of a Steelers wide receiver room that now includes two-time Pro Bowler DK Metcalf and veteran Robert Woods; Pittsburgh traded previous No. 1 receiver George Pickens to the Dallas Cowboys in May. Wilson is also joined by wide receiver Calvin Austin III, among others. The 41-year-old Rodgers, a four-time NFL MVP, signed a one-year deal with the Steelers in June after spending the previous two seasons with the New York Jets (2023-24). Last season, Rodgers totaled 3,897 passing yards, 28 passing touchdowns, 11 interceptions and a 90.5 passer rating, while completing 63.0% of his passes. Florida Memorial to lean on savvy starting QB as it seeks another winning season
Albert Einstein once said: 'The only source of knowledge is experience.' If that's true, Florida Memorial University quarterback and Kissimmee native David Buggs, 20, has already accumulated a lot of information. He was a five-year starting quarterback at two different high schools, and he became a college starter last year by the fourth game of his true-sophomore season. The Lions went 6-3-1 last year, including 5-2 with Buggs as the starter. 'He is a dual-threat QB,' said Mike Jones, who was promoted to head coach in February. 'He's very cerebral.' Indeed, Buggs has a 3.7 grade-point average while majoring in Finance. Last month, Buggs was nominated for the Dr. Leroy Walker Champions of Character Award. Buggs is a busy guy. Aside from football and school, he also competes in track and field (shot put, discus, javelin, hammer); and he works on campus as a sound engineer for the Lou Rawls Performing Arts Center. In addition, Buggs serves in campus ministry, which includes Bible service on weeknights and chapel service on Sundays. Buggs was also part of a group of about 20 FMU football players who donated their time to paint Carol City Elementary in the summer of 2024. 'As a Christian, I feel like I have been called to serve,' Buggs said. 'If I'm not serving others, I'm not doing the right thing.' On the field, Buggs – a 6-0, 205-pounder – completed 54.8 percent of his passes last season. He threw 15 touchdown passes and was intercepted eight times while averaging 213.3 passing yards per game. Buggs pointed out that he threw five of his eight interceptions in his first two games last season. After that, he threw just three picks in six games. Then again, Buggs admits he likes to take risks. 'Leadership is my biggest quality – that and playmaking,' Buggs said. 'I've been compared to a gunslinger. 'I like fitting a football into a tight window. Sometimes it gets me into trouble, but I also get big rewards.' Jones, who has been at FMU since he arrived in 2020 as an assistant quarterback coach, hopes Buggs has more rewards than risk this year as the Lions continue to improve as a football program. FMU brought football back in 2020 after the program had been dormant for 58 years. The first three years were rough as the Lions went 0-3; 2-9 and 3-7. However, the Lions went 6-4 in 2023 and had their second straight winning year last season. 'Our identity,' said Jones, 40, 'is that we play a tough brand of football -- fast and disciplined.' The Lions play in the Sun Conference, which includes Keiser and St. Thomas. Keiser has made it to the NAIA national championship game three straight years, winning the title in 2024. St. Thomas, Florida Memorial's neighbor in Miami Gardens, has won nine games in four straight years. FMU has yet to defeat St. Thomas. 'The Sun Conference is the SEC of the NAIA,' Jones said. Jones, a Miami Gardens native, played football at Norland High, helping the Vikings win a state title in 2002 under coach Nigel Dunn. That Norland team included star wide receiver Dwayne Bowe and linebacker Antwan Barnes, who both played in the NFL. FMU returns eight starters on offense this year, including Buggs, and five on defense. Among FMU's top players are running backs Jerodd Sims and Nygel Osborne; wide receivers Jamal Browder and Jalen Holly; right tackle Jeffrey Bonica; middle linebacker Kareem Roberts; and safety Darius Stokes. The Lions will again play their home games at Betty T. Ferguson Complex as they await the potential of one day having an on-campus facility. Buggs, though, is grateful the Lions can play at Ferguson. 'Any blade of grass where we can play football,' Buggs said, 'we're happy.'
