Gut health, nootropics, adaptogens…these are buzzy words we've come to see in headlines and our social feeds but but if a product's benefits aren't clear in the data, skepticism follows.

You can barely open a browser without seeing an ad for probiotics. Most claim to 'rebalance your microbiome' or 'boost immunity,' often with zero transparency. But rigorous science tells a messier story. For example, a recent meta-analysis in Nutrients found that while certain probiotic strains (Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG, for example) can improve symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), results are highly variable, and benefits don't extend to everyone equally.
People Science's trials demand more than vague 'feeling better' metrics: 'Gut health may involve bowel tracking and GSRS scores,' Oliver says, referring to the Gastrointestinal Symptom Rating Scale, a validated clinical measure. Brain supplements (nootropics) have officially left the biohacker basement and are now a $10 billion industry. But which ingredients actually work? The answer, again, is nuanced. Magnesium L-threonate, unique for its ability to cross the blood-brain barrier, is backed by preclinical data showing enhanced memory and learning. NAD+ precursors such as NMN and NR are gaining traction for cellular repair and energy, though human data is still evolving.
'Some products with strong online followings show little measurable benefit, while others perform better than expected with consistent use,' Oliver notes. 'These insights help brands improve products and ground their marketing in evidence.' Which is to say: sometimes, the internet is wrong. Sometimes, your new favorite powder is actually worth the hype.
The adaptogen boom is powered by the promise of 'stress adaptation,' but most people are still asking: how does this stuff actually work? 'Each category requires specialized tools,' Oliver notes. For adaptogens, that means combining subjective stress scores with hard biomarkers, such as salivary cortisol or dried blood spots for aging markers.
The science on stress, aging, and beauty is catching up. Chronic stress can tank your skin barrier and increase inflammation, as confirmed in National Institutes of Health studies and clinical psychodermatology research. Real-world studies show adaptogen-infused skincare and ingestibles may support resilience during stress-induced flare-ups, but most require regular use and realistic expectations. As Oliver says, 'AI helps us accelerate aspects like protocol optimization, participant targeting, and real-time monitoring, but it doesn't replace the context, clinical judgment, or methodological expertise our research team brings.'
No supplement, probiotic, or digital brain game will overhaul your biology overnight. And despite what social media says, the data is rarely black and white. Even AI-powered trials are only as good as their controls and data inputs; most 'significant' results are modest, variable, and dependent on consistent use, not miracles.
As Oliver puts it, 'Our approach is to combine speed with substance, using AI to enhance, not substitute, scientific rigor.' Safety is another watchpoint: combining supplements, especially with prescription meds, can be risky. And even the best AI can't fix a fundamentally poor study design or force honesty from brands not interested in real science.
Cryotherapy, for example, is trending for recovery and mood, but large-scale trials show mixed results. As one longevity specialist explains, 'One needs to discern whether they're snake oil, or whether there's actually some utility.' The same logic applies to adaptogens and nootropics: 'Ask for published data and demand proof, not just PR'.

Given the diverse applications of cannabis for both recreational and medicinal purposes, it's unsurprising that significant emphasis is placed on cultivating high-quality strains. On the other hand, cannabis plants' leaves are often seen as unhelpful and are believed to drain nutrients from the buds. Consequently, growers frequently remove the leaves to prevent the transfer of energy away from the flowers. A groundbreaking discovery: Flavoalkaloids However, researchers from Stellenbosch University (SU) discovered that these leaves may be more valuable than previously thought. For the first time, they identified a rare class of phenolics, flavoalkaloids, in cannabis leaves. Phenolic compounds, like flavonoids, are natural chemicals found in fruits and plants. They are known for their health-boosting antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects and are highly sought after in the pharmaceutical industry due to their antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-carcinogenic properties. The researchers studied three strains of cannabis grown in South Africa and identified 79 phenolic compounds, 25 of which were discovered for the first time in cannabis. Among these were 16 flavoalkaloids, primarily found in the leaves of one specific strain. Challenges in analysing plant phenolics Wiida Fourie-Basson Dr Magriet Muller, an analytical chemist at SU's LC-MS laboratory, and the study's lead author, highlighted the challenges of analysing plant phenolics due to their low concentrations and structural diversity. 'Most plants contain highly complex mixtures of phenolic compounds, and while flavonoids are commonly found across the plant kingdom, flavoalkaloids are exceptionally rare in nature,' she explained. 'We know that cannabis is extremely complex – it contains more than 750 metabolites – but we did not expect such high variation in phenolic profiles between only three strains, nor to detect so many compounds for the first time in the species. Especially the first evidence of flavoalkaloids in cannabis was very exciting.' A bright future for pharmaceuticals While people have long used cannabis leaves for eating, making concentrates, and crafting homemade salves, the discovery of these flavonoids marks a breakthrough. This discovery has the potential to revolutionise pharmaceutical treatments, holding the potential for things like plant-based alternatives to synthetic medicines for combating inflammation, preventing cancer, or improving overall well-being.

This Unexpected Type Of Treatment May Be A Surefire Way To Improve Your IBS Symptoms

When I hear the word hypnosis, I picture an auditorium of people lulled into a zombie-like state with a snap of fingers from a commanding figure on stage. Of course, that's just one (theatrical) type of hypnosis—but it turns out that you can actually use hypnosis to treat medical conditions, like irritable bowel syndrome. IBS, a functional gut disorder with symptoms including stomach pain, changes in stool, constipation or diarrhea, can be treated through gut-directed hypnotherapy (GDH), says Meredith R. Craven, PhD, director of GI behavioral medicine and clinical assistant professor at Stanford University School of Medicine. GDH can treat IBS—as well as other digestive tract conditions—by improving the communication between the gut and the brain. Meet the experts: Meredith R. Riehl, PsyD, is a GI psychologist and the clinical program director of GI Behavioral Health at the University of Michigan Medicine. There are other ways to treat IBS first, like through diet and medication, so GDH is usually not the first line of defense. It comes in when initial treatment options fail or fall short, and is part of a multi-pronged treatment plan that also includes diet and medication. 'Hypnotherapy is especially effective for IBS when symptoms are persistent despite dietary changes or medications, or when stress and anxiety are significant contributors to symptom flares,' says Megan E. Riehl, PsyD, GI psychologist and clinical program director of GI Behavioral Health at the University of Michigan Medicine. If you're struggling with IBS, gut-directed hypnotherapy might offer relief. Ahead, find out exactly how GDH works, and whether it might be the right treatment plan for you. IBS And The Gut-Brain Axis While IBS involves many physical symptoms, it's a gut-brain interaction disorder. 'Your brain and your gut are constantly talking to each other through a network of nerves (especially the vagus nerve), hormones, and immune signals,' says Riehl. For people living with IBS, this communication system becomes overactive. When that occurs, the gut becomes more sensitive and the brain more reactive, amplifying symptoms like pain, bloating, or urgency in the digestive system. Treatments like GDH work by retraining this system, calming the nervous system, and reducing gut hypersensitivity. A good way to understand the gut-brain axis is to think of a conductor leading an orchestra, says Craven. You need them to be communicating back and forth consistently in order to create beautiful music. 'The brain and the gut are constantly influencing each other, keeping each other up to date on what's going on,' says Craven. When the chatter is off and messages aren't going through, the music isn't going to sound good. Or in the case of the gut and brain, when they don't work together properly, those common IBS symptoms can appear. How Gut-Directed Hypnotherapy Works 'GDH is a highly specialized form of hypnosis that focuses on calming the communication between the brain and the gut,' which sets it apart from dietary changes or medications, says Riehl. 'It addresses the brain-gut axis directly, helping to modulate how the brain perceives and responds to gut sensations.' So, instead of just treating the symptoms, it focuses on the underlying issues, like nervous system dysregulation, which can cause IBS. Even though IBS is a gut/brain communication issue, GDH isn't usually used first for treatment because medication and dietary changes are effective and easier to prescribe, plus, there are fewer gastrointestinal psychologists than general gastrointestinal doctors, says Craven. So, many patients will see a general gastroenterologist for diet and medication treatments, and then if they aren't working, they'll later go to gastrointestinal psychologist for additional treatment. The goal of a GDH session is to retrain communication between the brain and the gut by putting you in a trance-like mental state 'when the mind is very focused, yet also open to suggestion,' says Craven. Hypnotizing gets a patient in this calm, receptive state that allows the nervous system and gut to get communication going properly. (It's a similar feeling to when you're in a dark movie theater and you're so immersed in the screen that you don't notice anything going on in the seats around you.) Here's how sessions work: Craven usually guides patients into a deeply relaxed state. Patients will find a spot on the ceiling to look at, then she'll count to three, then by three, they (voluntarily) close their eyes. After that, the patient will focus on relaxing their body to enter the trance state. Then, Craven uses science-based scripts tailored to GI symptoms, like calming visualizations and metaphors that help promote better gut functioning. The scripts target the hypervigilance of the brain and the hypersensitivity of the gut. Say you struggle with going to events, like dinners with friends, because you're worried your IBS might flare up—and then it leads to those tummy troubles. In a session, your provider might say phrases like: 'You're drinking a cooling liquid that is flowing through your entire digestive system and providing a healing coating. This coating will allow you to pay less and less attention to symptoms, and you'll focus more on things that are enjoyable to you,' says Craven. You're in control of your big misconception of hypnosis is that it's a form of mind control. In reality, as the patient, you are always fully in control of your actions and sensations, says Craven. The state of being hypnotized is that trance-like, meditative state, so you can choose to leave that trance at any moment—like if you open your eyes. GDH is very effective in terms of relieving symptoms, according to a 2024 review of studies on the topic in Frontiers in Psychology. When used with cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), hypnotherapy can also improve one's psychological well-being and quality of life, even in virtual sessions, per a 2020 review of studies on the effects of CBT and GDH in Current Gastroenterology Reports. 'Many patients report a reduction in abdominal pain, bloating, and bowel irregularities, along with a greater sense of control, confidence and improved quality of life,' says Riehl. 'What I find most rewarding is seeing patients regain trust in their bodies and return to activities they once avoided.' How To Start Gut-Directed Hypnotherapy If you decide to try it, treatment generally includes a series of weekly virtual or in-person 45-minute visits with a gastrointestinal psychology provider. (Craven recommends searching on which can show you vetted providers in your area according to your zip code.) When it comes to cost, each session may run about $125 to $250, though insurance may help lower how much you owe, says Riehl. You can also try GDH in a more affordable way through apps (including Nerva by Mindset Health and The Calm Gut App), which are also recommended as an accessible GDH option by Craven. It offers the same GDH protocol you'd experience in a doctor's office, but in a self-guided format. In order to experience effective symptom relief, you need to be self-motivated and disciplined to complete the full course solo, advises Craven. The app is even research-backed: In a 2025 study in the American Journal of Gastroenterology, 240 adults with IBS did a 42-session daily program with the app or they didn't use it, and logged their symptoms over six months. Overall, there were improvements in reducing pain, quality of life, and psychological status. Similarly, in a 2023 study in Neurogastroenterology & Motility, 190 participants completed 42 Nerva sessions between June 2019 and April 2020, and experienced reduced abdominal pain. Learning more about GDH is also a good reminder to take care of your mental health. 'The fact that hypnotherapy is effective for IBS tells us a great deal about the brain-gut connection and how deeply interconnected our mental and physical health truly are,' says Riehl. So, when you're feeling better mentally, your body will also hopefully follow suit. Targeting a Single Hormone Could Help Treat 40% of IBS-D Cases

Irritable bowel syndrome with diarrhea (IBS-D) is an unpleasant condition to live with, affecting millions of people worldwide. Now a new study has identified what could be a key trigger for the condition – a trigger which could be targeted by future treatments. An investigation on 108 people with and without IBS-D and related conditions has revealed a hormone called insulin-like peptide 5 (INSL5) is released when bile acids that aid digestion find themselves further along the digestive tract than usual, in the large intestine. This shouldn't happen, but when it does – due to certain conditions and gut malfunctions – more INSL5 gets produced, which causes diarrhea-like symptoms. This is potentially responsible for around two out of every five cases of IBS-D, the researchers say, and may explain why a lot of existing drugs and strategies to combat IBS-D are ineffective. Related: "When you go to the doctor with chronic diarrhea, they'll likely test for food intolerances, rule out an infection or look for signs of inflammation," says Chris Bannon, an endocrinologist at the University of Cambridge in the UK. "There has been significant research interest in the microbiome, but gut hormones have been neglected." "It's becoming increasingly clear that gut hormones play an important role in things like gut health and weight management." The study included participants with bile acid diarrhea (BAD) as well as IBS-D, helping the researchers identify a link between these conditions, the differences between them, and the triggers responsible for them. At the moment, BAD is difficult to diagnose and is often classed as IBS, and the researchers hope that being better able to spot it will lead to treatments that can more effectively target the underlying causes. It's also important to note that INSL5 is naturally produced by the body. Although it brings on diarrhea, it's actually a sign of the body trying to protect itself: it detects that bile acids shouldn't be in the colon, and flushes them out. "It makes sense that you would have something that detects toxins and helps the body rid itself of them," says Bannon. "But a problem develops if it's always being triggered by bile acid, causing very dramatic symptoms." Studies using mouse models had found that INSL5 could cause diarrhea, but this is the first time researchers have been able to show the same processes in people, and in ways that are connected to two recognized conditions. The next steps are to look at potential treatments targeting INSL5. Some IBS-D patients in previous studies showed improved symptoms when given the anti-sickness medicine ondansetron – a known INSL5 blocker – which may indicate one route forward, although it's not yet clear why ondansetron works so well. "This was a very exciting finding because it showed us that this hormone could be playing a big part in symptoms of this misunderstood condition," says Bannon. "It also meant it might allow us to develop a blood test to help diagnose bile acid diarrhea if INSL5 levels are only high in these individuals." The research has been published in Gut.
