Political row erupts over Mumbai local train tragedy: ‘Rail mantri has become reel mantri'

A political row erupted over the Mumbra train mishap that led to the falling of eight passengers from a crowded local trains on Monday. Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Aaditya Thackeray came down heavily on Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw amid chaos over the death of four passengers in the incident, and labelled him as "reel mantri". Aaditya Thackeray said the Mumbra railway mishap was the responsibility of the railway department and the minister. However, Thackeray added that the minister was busy making reels instead of taking responsibility. "Rail mantri has become a 'reel mantri'. There have been multiple terrible train accidents in the last two to three years, but no one is coming forward to claim any responsibility. This is solely the responsibility of the railway department and the railway minister. Sadly, he is busy making funny speeches in comic voices and reels but not coming forward to take responsibility," Thackeray said. Thackeray also said that despite people demanding his resignation on multiple occasions, he carried on with his post. "People of India have demanded his resignation multiple times, but he has no shame. He carries on," Thackeray, Shiv Sena UBT MLA from Worli, told reporters in Mumbai. Meanwhile, Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief, Raj Thackeray criticised the Mahayuti-led state government of only focusing on elections instead of real issues of the people. "The train accident that happened in Mumbai today is unfortunate. Many passengers died in this accident, but similar incidents are happening in Mumbai every day. Passengers are getting injured in Mumbai every day and yet no one is doing anything to help," the MNS chief said during a press conference on Monday. "Our entire focus is only on the elections and campaigning. Will Raj Thackeray-Uddhav Thackeray form an alliance? More important than this question are how travel is going in Mumbai today, how people are living in the cities and in the state as a whole," he added. As many as 13 people were injured after they fell from an excessively crowded train at Mumbra railway station in Thane district, Maharashtra, on Monday. Four people died in the incident, a Railways official said on Monday. According to officials, the incident happened when passengers travelling on the footboard on a local train from Kasara and similarly those on a train going towards CSMT, collided with each other and fell. Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde said on Monday that he had spoken to Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw about the Mumbra train accident. He said that steps would be taken to prevent such accidents in the future. "I am confident that the injured will recover... I have spoken to our Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw... Work is being done to ensure that such an accident does not happen again... Certainly, the Railways is taking this accident very seriously," Shinde said.

Last Updated: The ad, styled in Amul's trademark witty tone, features an illustration of the engineering marvel with the caption: 'A Dream Railized." Dairy giant Amul released a special print advertisement on Sunday celebrating the recently inaugurated Chenab Bridge in Jammu and Kashmir — the world's highest railway arch bridge. The ad, styled in Amul's trademark witty tone, features an illustration of the engineering marvel with the caption: 'A Dream Railized." Union Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw reshared the advertisement on social media platform X, thanking the dairy giant for recognising the landmark development in Valley. Amul's secondary tagline in the ad reads: 'Amul A Ticket To Great Taste". The advertisement was widely seen as a nod to the bridge's role in improving access to remote regions and its significance in national integration. Thank you Amul. — Ashwini Vaishnaw (@AshwiniVaishnaw) June 8, 2025 Engineering Marvel The Chenab Bridge, inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on June 6, stands at a staggering height of 359 metres above the Chenab River — taller than the Eiffel Tower. It is part of the Udhampur–Srinagar–Baramulla Railway Link (USBRL), aimed at connecting the Kashmir Valley to the rest of India via an all-weather rail network. Construction of the 1.3-kilometre-long bridge began in 2017 after years of planning and overcoming complex challenges including difficult Himalayan terrain, seismic activity, and extreme weather conditions. The project used over 30,000 tonnes of steel and was designed to withstand winds up to 260 km/h and even explosions, according to officials. The bridge is expected to drastically cut travel time between key regions in Jammu and Kashmir, with the Vande Bharat Express now set to operate through the corridor. The Chenab Bridge is also being hailed as a strategic asset, enhancing logistics and connectivity in a sensitive border region. Amul's tribute comes at a moment of national pride, blending its legacy of social commentary with a celebration of Indian infrastructure. First Published: June 08, 2025, 16:12 IST

This fulfilled a long-cherished dream of Kashmir's integration with the nation. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said the railway line bridge will be a 'huge blessing' for Kashmir. 'The decades-old dream of Kashmir has been fulfilled today. PM Modi inaugurated the Katra-Srinagar railway line and two bridges today. This is a huge achievement, and it will prove to be a huge blessing for Kashmir,' he told reporters on Friday. Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia told reporters invoked Prime Minister Narendra Modi and said, ''The Prime Minister has always said that India will emerge as a shining star on the world stage of development and progress, and the forces that will try to stop development will be given a befitting reply, and India will continue to develop...' Earlier in the day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the world's highest railway arch bridge, Chenab Railway Bridge, and India's first cable-stayed bridge, Anji Bridge, in Jammu and Kashmir's Reasi district. In a remarkable gesture, Prime Minister Modi waved the Tiranga, the Indian national flag and carried it forward on the deck of the bridge on the Chenab River. Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw were present during the inauguration. Before the inauguration of the bridge on the Chenab, the Prime Minister inspected the railway arch bridge. These bridges are part of the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Railway Link (USBRL) project in Jammu and Kashmir. The iconic Chenab Railway Bridge, the world's highest railway arch bridge, is part of the Katra-to-Sangaldan stretch, connecting New Delhi directly with Kashmir via Katra. Situated in the Reasi district of Jammu and Kashmir, the Chenab Bridge is an engineering marvel standing at 359 meters above the riverbed. It will officially connect the Kashmir Valley with the rest of India via rail for the first time. The project faced numerous engineering and logistical challenges due to the region's difficult terrain and seismic sensitivity. Yet, after years of meticulous work, the bridge now stands as a testament to India's technological prowess and commitment to inclusive development. It marks a transformative chapter in India's infrastructural landscape, promising greater connectivity, economic growth, and regional social integration. (ANI)
