Wan Junaidi called Dominic a highly-respected leader who had rendered outstanding service to his people, the state of Sarawak, and Malaysia as a whole.
KUCHING (May 16): Governor of Sarawak Tun Pehin Sri Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar and his wife Toh Puan Datuk Patinggi Fauziah Mohd Sanusi have extended their heartfelt condolences and deepest sympathies to the family of the late Datuk Amar Dominic Andrew Dago Randan.
The former Serian MP passed away yesterday at the age of 90.
In a statement, Wan Junaidi called Dominic a highly-respected leader within the Bidayuh community, who had rendered outstanding service to his people, the state of Sarawak, and Malaysia as a whole.
He expressed sorrow over the loss and offered prayers for Dominic's widow Datin Amar Mary Margaret Lenuh and the entire family.
Wan Junaidi wished them strength and resilience during this difficult time.
'He was not only a close acquaintance, but also a long-time comrade during our tenure in Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB).
'He was recognised as an active politician, a patriot, and a tireless advocate for the development of the Bidayuh community, particularly noted for his involvement in the formation of Malaysia in 1963,' Wan Junaidi said.
He called Dominic's passing a significant loss to Sarawak, his family, the Bidayuh community, and the state at large, adding that the profound impact of Dominic's contributions will not be forgotten.
'Losing a beloved family member is never easy. We hope the grief felt by the family of the late Dominic will ease with time,' he added.
Dominic was the first Bidayuh elected to the Dewan Rakyat.
Born on Aug 4, 1934, he was a member of the Inter-Governmental Committee (IGC) and played a direct role in negotiating the terms of Sarawak and Sabah's forming the Federation of Malaysia, alongside representatives from Malaya and Singapore.
From March 15, 1971 until December 1973, he served as chairman of the Sarawak State Public Service Commission.
In recognition of his service, Dominic was conferred the title 'Datuk Amar' and received the Sarawak Independence Commemorative Award during the state's 50th anniversary of independence within Malaysia. Dominic Andrew Dago Randan lead Wan Junaidi

Make sure you've done your research before pointing fingers, Wee tells Armizan

KUALA LUMPUR: MCA president Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong has called on Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Minister Datuk Armizan Mohd Ali to provide evidence supporting his claim that Wee was involved in approving the Control of Supplies (Amendment) Regulations 2021. In a video posted on Facebook today, Wee strongly refuted Armizan's statement and demanded proof for the allegation. "I have reviewed the parliamentary Hansard and the relevant bill to confirm which section mentions that a permit is required for using more than three cylinders of subsidised gas. "Furthermore, are food and beverage businesses actually prohibited from using subsidised liquefied petroleum gas (LPG)?" he asked. Previously, the media reported that Armizan had reminded Wee to review the regulations that were enacted when the former transport minister was in the cabinet. Armizan was quoted as saying that the Control of Supplies (Amendment) Regulations 2021 — which stipulate that any party using more than 42kg of LPG is required to apply for a Scheduled Controlled Goods Permit — had already been enforced since Oct 15, 2021, under the previous administration when Wee was a member of the cabinet. Wee demanded that Armizan issue an apology for alleging his involvement in approving regulations related to supply control while he was in the cabinet in 2021. The Ayer Hitam member of parliament said that based on a review of the 2021 parliamentary Hansard, the amendment at the time was solely aimed at granting broader enforcement powers to officers of the then Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Ministry. He said the amendment to the Control of Supplies Act (Amendment) 2021 was never intended to regulate the use of subsidised LPG. "I reviewed every line in the Hansard of the Dewan Rakyat during the debate, where MPs from constituencies such as Jempol, Bayan Baru, Pasir Gudang, Jelutong, Kota Melaka, Bukit Bendera, Pokok Sena, and Sepang presented their arguments. "However, not a single MP at the time raised the issue of requiring a permit for three cylinders of subsidised LPG, nor did anyone discuss the commercial use of LPG by food outlets," he said. He said then Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi, in his reply in parliament in March 2022, also made no mention of any regulation concerning subsidised gas cylinders. "Datuk Armizan, why fabricate stories and make baseless accusations against me? "You weren't even in the Dewan Rakyat at the time, but you can always check the Hansard. "Do your homework before accusing me. "You're being unfair to me, you know? Or at the very least, just call Nanta to get confirmation. "Surely you have his phone number? If not, I can give it to you," he said. Wee said Armizan should not have accused him of being involved in the amendment related to the requirement for storing more than three cylinders of subsidised LPG and questioned the accuracy of the minister's source of information. He said the regulation concerning the use of subsidised LPG cylinders not exceeding 42kg might merely be an internal directive or administrative instruction from the ministry, and not part of the 2021 amendment. Wee said the law was never enforced until it was first implemented under the Pakatan Harapan 1.0 administration in 2019, before being revived again through Op Gasak this year. He said Armizan should issue an apology for the confusion and the allegations made against him. "You (Armizan) owe me an apology for your mistake.

PAS eyes support of ‘critical' non-Malays disgruntled with govt

PAS vice-president Amar Abdullah said that although some PH supporters may have become disappointed with the party, they still disliked PAS over its perceived hardline Malay-Muslim stance. (Facebook pic) PETALING JAYA : Non-Malay voters disgruntled with the Pakatan Harapan-led government are the target of PAS, the largest opposition party in the Dewan Rakyat, as it prepares for the next general election. PAS vice-president Amar Abdullah acknowledged that Malay-Muslim parties have struggled to gain the support of non-Malays. However, it was apparent that voters who make up PH's core support have become increasingly critical of the government led by PH chairman Anwar Ibrahim, Amar said in an interview with Malaysiakini. 'The question now is how PAS can attract them to our side,' Amar was quoted as saying. The challenge was to find more convincing ways to win over the non-Malays ahead of the general election, which is due by February 2028. While some PH supporters may have become disappointed with the coalition's inability to execute various reforms it had promised, he admitted that they still disliked PAS due to its perceived hardline Malay-Muslim stance. 'This is what we're currently thinking about: how to win their support,' he said, adding that the Islamic party must preserve its clean image to retain young voters. Amar also took a swipe at its Perikatan Nasional partner Gerakan for making statements that have 'harmed and undermined' PAS. He urged Gerakan, the only multiracial party in the opposition coalition, to exercise control in making public statements, adding that PAS keeps an eye on such matters. 'I have to be honest here, because occasionally their remarks have backfired. They need to be careful and exercise control, because we're part of the same coalition. There must be give and take,' he said. Gerakan has 'much to improve' in attracting Chinese voters, who have been largely supporting DAP, and Gerakan's machinery and groundwork needed improvement, while the party's image itself needed to be rebuilt, he said. In November last year, Gerakan president Dominic Lau urged PAS to declare that it will not interfere with the rights of other communities, in order to ease the concerns of non-Malays and boost their support for PN. However, PAS deputy president Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man shot down the proposal, saying Gerakan should not blame the Islamic party for its failure to muster support from the Chinese community.
