SME South Africa hosts inaugural funding summit to empower local entrepreneurs

SME South Africa's first annual Funding Summit took place on 12 June 2025 at The Empire Conference and Events Venue in Parktown. The full-day event brought together more than 400 delegates, including small business owners, funders, and thought leaders from across South Africa - even as far as the Eastern and Western Cape - to engage on one of the most critical success factors for SMEs: access to funding. A strong speaker line-up tackles real funding barriers The summit featured 19 speakers who brought deep insights from their fields - including venture capital, bootstrapping, agricultural funding, debt finance, and alternative financing models. Notable voices included Darlene Menzies, Sheldon Tatchell, Jameel Khan, and others. 'We are excited about the wonderful feedback we've received,' said Velly Bosega, CEO of Oak Ventures (SME South Africa). 'I'm proud of my team for bringing this vision to life and for their dedication to serving our audience and clients.' Major commitment: R300m inclusive justice institute partnership A headline announcement came from Litha Kutta, Executive at Woolworths Financial Services, who spotlighted the launch of Woolworths' Inclusive Justice Institute - a major initiative designed to tackle food security, education, and MSME development in South Africa. In total, R300m has been committed to the Institute, with R200m from Woolworths and R100m from the Land and Agricultural Development Bank of South Africa (Land Bank). The Institute is home to two nonprofit arms: the Enterprise Inclusive Justice Institute (EIJI), which supports MSME mentorship and integration into Woolworths' supply chain, and the Community Inclusive Justice Institute (CIJI), which focuses on food security and basic education. The partnership aims to transform South Africa's agricultural and retail supplier landscape, with a strong emphasis on sustainability and inclusive growth. 'This initiative is a practical demonstration of how a leading retailer may empower small enterprises,' said Minister of Small Business Development, Stella Ndabeni, at the launch event in Cape Town. 'Woolworths has a partner in us.' Empowering entrepreneurs through access and education With the support of silver sponsor FNB and bronze sponsors SMEgo and Fund the People, the event underscored SME South Africa's core mission: to make applying for funding accessible and transparent for all South African entrepreneurs. The Funding Summit served as a practical, informative space for entrepreneurs to build funding readiness and gain clarity on where and how to seek capital. 'We understand how vital funding is to SME growth. Without access to finance, entrepreneurs struggle to succeed, which limits their ability to create jobs and contribute meaningfully to the economy,' added Bosega. A successful start and a look ahead Many attendees praised the summit for its organisation and value. 'We're setting our sights even higher for next year,' said Bosega. 'This is only the beginning of what we aim to build for the SME ecosystem.'

Mastercard Rolls Out AI-Driven Card Reissuance Tool in EEMEA

Mastercard has launched Account Intelligence Reissuance, an AI-driven tool designed to support card issuers in the Eastern Europe, Middle East, and Africa (EEMEA) region with managing card reissuance more efficiently and reducing fraud-related losses. The service uses Mastercard's proprietary AI and network data to evaluate the risk associated with compromised cards. It provides automated recommendations on which cards should be monitored or replaced, aiming to streamline a traditionally manual and costly process. Card fraud remains a significant challenge for issuers and merchants, often requiring the replacement of large volumes of payment cards following data breaches or other compromises. The new tool supports both physical and digital card skimming scenarios and enables issuers to sort primary account numbers (PANs) based on risk more precisely. 'At Mastercard, we have developed a comprehensive portfolio of fraud products that offer valuable and advanced insights and data,' said Selin Bahadirli, Executive Vice President, Services, EEMEA, Mastercard. 'We are delighted to expand our proposition with Account Intelligence Reissuance that goes one step further by allowing issuers to aggregate data, measure risk and prioritise the most compromised cards for reissuance.' The service builds on Mastercard's existing Decision Intelligence capabilities, which monitor 159 billion transactions annually to identify suspicious activity. Recent generative AI upgrades to its fraud detection systems have improved real-time analysis of account, transaction, merchant, and device data. Mastercard is also developing AI solutions at its Centre for Advanced AI and Cyber Technology in Dubai, launched in partnership with the UAE government. The centre focuses on building regional AI expertise and tools aimed at detecting cyber threats, data breaches, and fraud. The Account Intelligence Reissuance service is expected to expand to Asia Pacific, North America, and Latin America later in the year.

Oman: OIA boosts local content spending to $688mln in 2024

MUSCAT: Local content spending by Oman Investment Authority (OIA), the government's investment arm, totaled RO 265.5 million in 2024, OIA President Abdulsalam bin Mohammed al Murshidi revealed on Sunday. Addressing the Authority's annual media briefing, Al Murshidi stated: 'OIA has fulfilled its role in maximizing local content and supporting small and medium enterprises (SMEs), with spending on SMEs reaching RO 265.5 million by the end of 2024. Of this amount, RO 139 million was allocated to Riyada card holders, increasing the share of SMEs in total supply chain expenditures to 19.8 per cent.' According to the Authority's 2024 Annual Report, the share of local content contractual expenditure within OIA and its subsidiaries rose from 30 per cent to 32.4 per cent in 2024. The contribution to local content is part of OIA's strategy of creating an enabling environment for entrepreneurs, SMEs and innovative startups, particularly those which are adopting and localising advanced technologies and retaining investment capital domestically. This, in turn, drives development, enhancing economic diversification and boosting national competitiveness. In-Country-Value (ICV) development is a main pillar of OIA's objectives. In 2024, the Authority advanced its Ring-Fencing Programme, which is designed to increase the market share of local companies by allocating specific business scopes to Omani firms exclusively. A total of 32 ring-fenced domains were approved in 2024, enabling business opportunities worth RO 71 million to be channeled to local firms in these domains. OIA President Abdulsalam bin Mohammed al Murshidi speaking at the media briefing on Sunday. Furthermore, 38 small and medium enterprises were suitably developed to receive a total of RO 11 million in contracts under its Vendor Development programme. Moreover, OIA launched of the third edition of the mandatory list programme, which stipulates the types of services and products that OIA companies are required to procure from Omani businesses. Included in the latest edition are 311 products and services provided by local vendors. Additionally, the authority implemented a new performance monitoring system for the programme in 2024. Furthermore, in line with maximising local content and empowering small enterprises, the Authority issued a revised version of its procurement and tender policy which obliges contractors to meet specified Omanisation rates. The policy also contributed to improving incentives provided to SMEs and Riyada card holders.
