Hugely popular ITV crime thriller axed after just one season - despite bringing in glowing reviews and 4million viewers

Daily Mail25-07-2025
A hit ITV crime thriller has been axed after just one season despite having brought in glowing reviews and four million viewers.
Breakthrough drama Joan has been canned, much to the dismay of avid fans, reportedly because its starring actress Sophie Turner was too busy.
It has been claimed that ITV's drama team spent months trying to find a gap in star Sophie Turner 's busy schedule to film the second series.
However, after exhausting all avenues, the production crew had to admit defeat and axe the popular thriller.
An ITV spokesperson told The Sun: 'ITV and Snowed-In Productions would love to produce another series of Joan.
'However, as a consequence of cast availability, and following co-production discussions, a second series isn't possible.'
MailOnline has contacted ITV and Sophie's representatives for comment.
The series follows the life of Joan Hannington - a real-life jewel thief who pocketed more than £3million of gems in London in the 1980s.
In her ever-present fur coats and shimmering blue eyeshadow, the glamorous fraudster earned herself the moniker The Godmother among the city's criminal network.
The first season aired last autumn and comprised only six episodes, but that was enough to get viewers hooked.
The show left several loose ends to be tied, with the Joan determined to get revenge on her criminal counterpart Albie, who had betrayed her.
Fiery Joan was also left with plans of a new and lucrative business empire after having spent a four-year stint in prison for armed robbery.
Last year, director Richard Laxton said: 'There is definitely potential for the story to go on,' which only added to fans' despair.
Madonna and Gwyneth Paltrow both attempted to resurrect Joan's thrilling story and bring it to screens in the early 2000s, but they weren't successful.
Sophie is currently occupied with several time-consuming projects and is set to play video game heroine Lara Croft in an upcoming Tomb Raider TV series.
She is also appearing in sci-fi movie Cloud One and will feature in horror film The Dreadful alongside her Game Of Thrones co-star Kit Harrington.
Sophie also has two daughters from her marriage to American singer Joe Jonas, and is now in a relationship with aristocrat Peregrine Pearson.
Joan's very first episode was branded 'incredible' by viewers when it first aired last year.
During one scene, Sophie's character meets her future husband Boisie Hannington (Frank Dillane) in a pub, with the bartender played by the couple's actual son Benny Banks.
Speaking ahead of the episode, Sophie said: 'It's amazing because in the scene that we meet first in the pub, the bartender was played by Joan's son Benny'.
'It was so cool to have that because it's the moment his parents meet and he got to be there and we got to hang out with him'.
Viewers were full of praise for Sophie's performance as she played the young mum, who ventures into the criminal underworld in a bid to make a better life for her young daughter.
In a press conference about the show, Sophie explained she had no problem turning on the waterworks, saying: 'I'm a Pisces, I'm emotional.'
'She is so funny but she has gone through so much trauma and is so ambitious,' Sophie added of her character.
'There really is so much to her – mother, lover, liar, thief. It's just remarkable that it's all a true story.'
The drama follows Joan as she escapes her violent husband but has to place her daughter into care as she gets back on her feet.
With no money and nowhere to live, she manages to secure a job in a jeweller's, from where she steals her first diamonds.

Romeo Beckham shares cryptic tattoo amid family feud with brother Brooklyn

Romeo Beckham added a new tattoo to his extensive ink collection, which comes after it was revealed Brooklyn no longer follows him and brother Cruz on social media Romeo Beckham showed off his brand-new tattoo on Tuesday, adding to his already extensive ink collection. Just like his father and brothers, the 22-year-old is covered in endless tattoos and his latest one is a short phrase that some have taken as a dig at his brother, Brooklyn Beckham. ‌ The Beckham family have been embroiled in a massive feud in recent months. The family feud appeared to gather pace when Brooklyn failed to attend his father's 50th birthday party in May, which, according to reports, left David heartbroken. It also emerged that neither Nicola Peltz nor Brooklyn was following his brother's Instagram accounts. ‌ But according to the publication, sources revealed that it was in fact Cruz and Romeo who have blocked Brooklyn. It comes after Cruz Beckham 'steals' his dad's tiny white trunks and family have epic response. ‌ And now, Romeo seemingly took a dig at Brooklyn with his new tattoo. The star took to his social media page to share the phrase 'C'est La Vie' which he got tattooed on top of his shoulder. The tattoo is French for 'that's life' or 'such is life'. The phrase is used to say that certain situations happen in life, and there is nothing you could do about them. ‌ It comes several weeks after Romeo issued a sharp response to Brooklyn seemingly unfollowing him and Cruz on social media. Romeo posted a screenshot of his Spotify, showing he was listening to a song entitled Walking Away, from Justin Bieber's new surprise album, titled Swag. ‌ Along with the screenshot, he wrote: "Yup" in a one word response to his brother's latest brutal move. He has also returned the favour by unfollowing Brooklyn on Instagram, too. Romeo also does not follow Brooklyn's wife, Nicola, on Instagram. The feuding siblings' brother Cruz, 20, also doesn't follow Brooklyn on Instagram. Meanwhile, those close to Brooklyn told The Sun last month that Brooklyn and Nicola did not unfollow the brothers and had "no idea" about it until he read about it online. "It's possible Romeo and Cruz blocked them, which would make it appear as him no longer following the brothers," they said. ‌ "He and Nicola certainly didn't unfollow them or block them — they're as confused as anyone else. The first they heard about it was when it was being reported on." Hot sauce entrepreneur Brooklyn still follows his famous mum and dad, so it is unclear if a war of words between himself and his brothers may have been happening behind the scenes.

During the finale, Yasmin's twin sister Zara and mum Mitra hosted a TikTok livestream. Speaking in the clip, Mitra said: "What you don't understand is this is not a paid vote. "If it's not a paid vote, you cannot see the results. That means they can say whatever they want. "Do you understand? For you to see the result - a correct result that people vote - you have to pay cash. "Because this is free voting, they decide." Mitra referenced Yasmin and Dejon writing each other's names on their boards during a villa game. The Islanders were asked who they'd couple up with if their actual partner wasn't in the villa. She added: "I always knew after that episode that Yasmin's not going to win - because of the way they edited it." The Sun has approached ITV for comment. Maya Jama says she 'blacked out' during Love Island final as she praises 'most dramatic series yet' However, ITV have refuted Mitra's claims by releasing the finale's voting percentages. Winners Toni and Cach secured an impressive 33.5% of the audience's support. Shakira and Harry drew a sizeable 26.2% of the votes, while Yas and Jamie were not far behind taking 22% on the nose. Aesthetics practitioner Angel, 26, only made her debut on July 17, but managed to secure an impressive 18.3% of the overall voting audience with Casa Amor boy Ty. As for Yasmin, she entered the villa on Day 5 alongside fellow bombshells Emily and Malisha. She then explored connections with villa boys Shea, Conor, Harry and Ben. Yasmin met Jamie during Casa Amor - and their bond continued into the final. Love Island airs on ITV2 and ITVX.
