NYC doctors perform first-ever ‘seamless' 22-hour triple organ transplant in state
NEW YORK (PIX11) – Doctors in New York City performed the first surgeries of their kind in the state—a 22-hour heart, liver, and kidney transplant.
The surgeries took place at Mount Sinai Hospital. The first surgery occurred in January, and the second happened in March.

'The coordination between our abdominal and thoracic medical and surgical teams was seamless—and the anesthesia expertise required to perform these transplants was critical,' said Dr. Sander S. Florman, the head of the March surgical case. 'An amazing tour de force for this patient!'
The first patient in January was a 64-year-old man who had previously undergone a heart transplant at The Mount Sinai Hospital in 2002. After two decades, he developed chronic rejection of his transplanted heart and experienced deteriorating kidney and liver function.
Doctors noted that these complications are common with long-standing heart disease. The patient was able to undergo a heart, liver, and kidney transplant and recovered from the surgery.
The second patient, a 45-year-old man suffering from severe cardiomyopathy, had experienced multiple complications during a hospitalization for heart failure in 2024. His hospitalization left him with end-stage kidney disease requiring dialysis.
The patient was readmitted to the hospital in February 2025 with worsening heart failure. He was listed for a heart and kidney transplantation. However, due to the progression of heart failure and cardiogenic shock—when the body's organs do not receive enough blood and oxygen to function correctly—he required two emergency artificial heart pumps to maintain cardiac function.

By this time, his liver function had also begun to deteriorate, and he was dying of liver failure. The patient was emergently listed for a liver transplant and underwent the successful triple transplant several days later, making a turnaround.
According to doctors, the patient returned home less than a month later after achieving a complete recovery.
According to the United Network for Organ Sharing, only 58 heart, liver, and kidney transplants have been performed nationwide.

New guidance launched in Ireland to support LGBTQ+ inclusion in mental health services
On June 6, a landmark new guidance was launched in Ireland to support staff working across mental health services in delivering more inclusive and equitable care to LGBTQ+ people. The document follows a review that highlighted how LGBTQ+ people face disproportionate levels of mental distress and unmet needs. Launched this morning at the LGBT Ireland National Conference, the guidance was produced by the Mental Health Commission with the aim of providing accessible guidance to mental health professionals. The document offers 'a deeper understanding' of the unique challenges that LGBTQ+ people face when accessing mental health services in Ireland. The guidance is based on an evidence review which highlighted the disproportionate levels of mental distress and unmet needs members of the LGBTQ+ community face, especially young people and trans individuals. The review found high rates of suicidal ideation, suicide attempts, and self-injury among LGBTQ+ people. Moreover, it highlighted a prevalence of anxiety, depression and eating disorders among gender and sexual minorities. These studies have highlighted how LGBTQ+ individuals experience a higher mental health burden in comparison to the general population. Air quality advisory due to haze in NYC region takes some by surprise
NEW YORK (PIX11) — An air quality advisory is in effect for much of the New York City region, meaning people with respiratory issues are advised to take extra precautions. The notice has taken some locals by surprise. The cause of the warning is wildfires burning in the Great Plains of Canada, which are sending smoke east and south to our region. More Local News Dr. Purvi Parikh of the Allergy Asthma Network specializes in treating respiratory conditions. She said that Wednesday's air quality is a real concern. 'For someone that has to work outdoors all day, for example,' the pulmonologist told PIX11 News. 'That prolonged exposure could even set you up for long-term problems if you already have an underlying respiratory condition, or you're elderly, or have a heart condition. So it's really important as much as you can, to limit exposure and protect yourself,' Dr. Parikh continued. Various people that PIX11 News encountered on Wednesday had not heard about the advisory. More: Latest News from Around the Tri-State Daniel Huie was getting ready to ride a Citi Bike. 'I went running this morning,' he said, but added that he'd pay closer attention to air quality conditions going forward. The advisory did not apply when he'd gone running. It's in effect from 11:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. Dr. Parikh said that while the advisory is for people with respiratory issues, everybody should take precautions when the air quality levels reach the triple digits. They're forecast to be at least 105 on Wednesday. The higher the number, the more potentially dangerous the air is. 'For the most part, you should be okay,' Parikh said about the general population. New York man accused of strangling, stabbing woman in front of child: DA
SUFFOLK COUNTY, N.Y. (PIX11) – A Long Island man is accused of strangling and stabbing his girlfriend in front of her child with developmental disabilities, a Long Island District Attorney announced Wednesday. 'Domestic violence causes deep and lasting harm,' said District Attorney Raymond A. Tierney. 'My office is here to stand with survivors and take strong action against abusers.' More Local News The DA did not name the accused to protect the identity of his victims. The district attorney's office said that the defendant is a 33-year-old male from Coram, N.Y.. According to a police investigation, the defendant and his girlfriend were staying in a Long Island hotel when they got into a fight in May 2025. The defendant allegedly began punching his girlfriend repeatedly in her head and body, authorities said. Throughout the assault, which lasted hours, he also stabbed the victim with a pen and strangled her with such force that he fractured a small bone in her neck, authorities said. The victim also sustained a laceration to her liver due to the abuse. The beating stopped when other guests at the hotel called the front desk to report the incident to the police. Responding officers observed severe bruising and swelling on the victim's face, leading to the defendant's arrest. The victim was taken to a local hospital to be treated for her injuries, police said. The defendant was charged with strangulation, assault, endangering a physically disabled person and endangering a child. The unnamed defendant is due back in court on July 2.
