Georgia football injury, suspension report entering fall camp

Yahoo26-07-2025
Georgia Bulldogs head coach Kirby Smart updated the status of several ailing Georgia players during SEC media days. Overall, Georgia is pretty healthy entering fall camp. The Bulldogs don't appear to have a season-ending injury yet, but Georgia does have a pair of players recovering from knee surgeries in punter Brett Thorson and defensive back Ondre Evans.
Perhaps Georgia's most important injury is at punter. Thorson is rehabbing a knee injury he suffered in the SEC championship, but has still earned preseason All-American honors this summer.
"Thorson's coming back. He's done a good job," Smart said at SEC media days. "I can't sit here and tell you if he'll be the starting punter. It depends on his health. But he's starting some punting."
Georgia is expected to start fall camp in early August as the Bulldogs prepare for the Aug. 30 season opener against the Marshall Thundering Herd. Georgia will not have to release an official injury report until Week 3's SEC opener at Tennessee, so the Bulldogs and coach Smart will likely be pretty hesitant to share details on injuries as usual.
Expected to be ready for fall camp
Running back Roderick Robinson (ankle)
Offensive tackle Monroe Freeling (shoulder)
Wait and see
Tight end Jaden Reddell (ankle tightrope surgery)
Outside linebacker Quintavius Johnson (ankle tightrope surgery)
Punter Brett Thorson (knee)
Defensive back Ondre Evans (torn ACL)
Facing possible suspension
Offensive lineman Jahzare Jackson (arrested)
Kirby Smart is unlikely to publicly announce a suspension Jackson, but his arrest was significant and could even result in him being dismissed from the program. Former Georgia wide receiver Nitro Tuggle and offensive lineman Marques Easley were both arrested in the spring and left via the spring transfer portal, so we'll see if things unfold in a similar manner with Jackson.

LSU football legend Marcus Spears makes bolds statement about Brian Kelly's future

Expectations are high for LSU football in 2025. And with high expectations comes pressure. LSU head coach Brian Kelly is entering year four with the program. His tenure so far includes two 10-win seasons, but he's yet to lead LSU to a College Football Playoff. LSU signed the No. 1-ranked transfer class and retained quarterback Garrett Nussmeier. This is a talented roster and it was good enough to earn LSU a top-10 ranking in the initial coaches' poll. The hype train is rolling and former LSU football star Marcus Spears knows what that means for Kelly. "If you don't win big, if you're Brian Kelly, this fan base is done. And I'm just telling you, the wins and the success and all of the things, going to the SEC championship, your first year was great, but people still didn't feel like that was a big time accomplishment based on how it happened," Marcus Spears said. Spears referred to 2022, where LSU won the SEC West but was out of the playoff discussion thanks to a 9-3 regular season record. "This year, you see all of the transfers, you see the recruiting class, Garrett Nussmeier in the preseason Heisman conversation," Spears said, "All of those things in the past at LSU has aligned with them having big seasons." Spears said if LSU doesn't make the playoff, the fan base "is going to turn quickly on Brian Kelly." Spears' comments won't be news to Kelly. Every man who has held the head coaching position at LSU is familiar with the pressure. Ed Orgeron didn't shy away from talking about it during his tenure. Neither has Kelly. Florida's long snapper Rocco Underwood named to 2025 Patrick Mannelly Award watch list

The 2025 Patrick Mannelly Award watch list was recently released and included Florida football longsnapper Rocco Underwood, who earned the honor last season after a superb campaign. The rising redshirt senior originally from Lake Mary, Florida, will have the opportunity to repeat the honor in 2025 following an effort that also resulted in All-SEC recognition, as well as being named a Phil Steele First-Team All-American and AFCA Second-Team All-American. He has also made the SEC Fall Academic Honor Roll thrice in his career, along with a SEC First-Year Academic Honor Roll mention. Underwood has tallied a total of 314 special teams snaps over his four-season career in Gainesville, during which he made seven total tackles on special teams. Of those snaps, 103 of them came last fall when the special-teamer made significant improvements in his game across the board, amassing 56 successful punt coverages as well as 57 successful field goal and extra point attempts during that campaign. He notched his single-season career-high of three tackles in 2024, also notching his lone credited fumble recovery against the Florida State Seminoles. About the Patrick Mannelly Award The Patrick Mannelly Award was first issued in 2019 and is given to the best long snapper in college football. Named after Patrick Mannelly, who played as the long snapper for Duke University from 1993 to 1997 and was the long snapper for the Chicago Bears from 1998 to 2013. During his time in the NFL, Mannelly never recorded a bad snap and was credited with playing a pivotal role in the success of the kickers he played with. The award benefits Bernie's Book Bank, which is a non-profit organization dedicated to finding ways to help children develop their reading skills by providing free books to help build their home libraries in the local Lake Buff, Illinois, area. The 30-man watch list will be narrowed down to ten semifinalists on Nov. 17, with the three finalists being announced on Dec. 1 and the winner being selected on Dec. 13. Jose Alvarado apologizes to Phillies, fans as he nears return from 80-game PED suspension

José Alvarado apologized to the Philadelphia Phillies and their fans Tuesday as the hard-throwing lefty reliever is nearing his return from an 80-game suspension for testing positive for a performance-enhancing substance. In an Instagram post, Alvarado wrote he never intended to take a prohibited substance and is "fully aware that using prohibited substances is wrong." "I made a mistake and therefore, I have faced the consequences set forth by MLB," Alvarado wrote. "Going forward, my focus is on working hard to help the team win." Alvarado was suspended for 80 games on May 18 after he tested positive for exogenous testosterone, a banned substance. Phillies president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski said the positive test was caused by a weight loss drug Alvarado took in the offseason. Alvarado accepted the suspension. "It's not something he did knowingly," Dombrowski said in May. "I believe that, the way he talked to me." The suspension makes Alvarado ineligible for the postseason. He's eligible to return to the Phillies on Aug. 19, when the club hosts the Seattle Mariners. MLB rules allow him to go on a minor-league rehab assignment before his return. He returned to Citizens Bank Park on Tuesday for the first time since his suspension. "There is always a lesson to be learned in every mistake," he wrote Tuesday on social media. The bullpen Alvarado returns to isn't the one he last pitched in when he was the Phils' best high-leverage reliever. At the time of his suspension, the 30-year-old had a 2.70 ERA with 25 strikeouts in 20 innings. His sinker averaged 99.3 mph in 20 games, up from 97.8 mph last season. The Phillies acquired Jhoan Duran from the Minnesota Twins before last week's MLB trade deadline, meaning the club now has a set closer. When Alvarado returns, he'll join a remodeled Phillies bullpen with Duran as the closer and veteran David Robertson in the mix. Robertson signed with the team last month and is eligible to return Tuesday, but will need more time in Triple-A. Orion Kerkering and Matt Strahm are now the Phillies' primary setup relievers. "What it does is it moves everybody up an inning, that's all," Phillies manager Rob Thomson said Monday. "You still have Kerkering and Strahm as your two main setup guys and then you have a combination of [Max] Lazar and [Tanner] Banks and [Jordan] Romano and those guys in front of them. It just makes the bullpen a little lengthier. It gives us more depth." No one knows what to expect from Alvarado when he returns, but if he's close to his old self, the Phils will have another high-leverage arm they can use down the stretch. The Phils are seeking to make their fourth straight postseason appearance and are currently 1 1/2 games ahead of the New York Mets in the NL East race. "It's been a long 80 days without him. Not only is he talented, but he brings so much energy to the field and the clubhouse. It's just really good to have him around," Thomson said. "I think he helps, but I think they've done pretty well without him, to tell you the truth. We've won a lot of games without him, but he's certainly going to bring more energy and he's going to bring another really, really good arm." Here's Alvarado's full statement posted Tuesday: "May 18th was a very difficult day for me. That day, MLB announced the positive result of a doping test conducted in March 2025. "I am fully aware that using prohibited substances is wrong and I would never intend to do so because I have always had great respect for the game, my organization, my teammates and the fans, all of whom I want to offer my sincere apologies. "I made a mistake and therefore, I have faced the consequences set forth by MLB. "Going forward, my focus is on working hard to help the team win. "Once again, I offer my deepest apologies to the Phillies organization, my teammates, my family, my country Venezuela, the City of Philadelphia and the fans who have always supported me, especially the children and young people. "There is always a lesson to be learned in every mistake. "I thank God for giving me the strength to overcome this situation. I am glad to be back and ready to support the team."
