Projecting the region as 'one to watch', the much-anticipated report, unveiled at day three of Arabian Travel Market, takes a deep dive into the growing power of this fast-emerging business events destination in the global MICE industry.
From renewables to fintech and telecoms to space travel, growth is being nurtured in both new and existing industries, with businesses and brands in the UAE, Saudi Arabia and Qatar at the forefront of this.
As business grows, infrastructure is being built at breakneck speed to house the many meetings and events needed to support it. Talent from around the world is also following suit, with a new business or venue, as well as new infrastructure, opening every day in the Middle East. Alongside geo-adapted supply chains and a culturally creative offering, this is why some of the most impressive event brands in the world are making the thriving region their home.
Written by Managing Director of Eight PR & Marketing, Alistair Turner, the inaugural report also sheds light on the return of face-to-face events in the Middle East. In a business culture where in-person interactions are highly valued, around 70 per cent of meetings in the region now take place face-to-face, with just 30 per cent happening virtually or in a hybrid format.

Jeddah Tower: Everything You Need to Know
What do Philadelphia City Hall, the Empire State Building, and the Burj Khalifa have in common? They've all held the title of the world's tallest skyscraper. And eventually Jeddah Tower, a neo-futuristic skyscraper planned in Saudi Arabia, will join the ranks among these iconic structures. Designed by Adrian Smith and Gordon Gill of Adrian Smith + Gordon Gill Architecture, the structure will stand at 3,281 feet tall when completed in the next four to five years, nearly 11 times the height of the Statue of Liberty. 'The design for Jeddah Tower is rooted in the symbolism of Saudi Arabia while looking toward the future by being technologically expressive,' explain Smith and Gill in a joint statement to AD . 'Its slender, subtly asymmetrical massing evokes the new growth of palm fronds shooting upward from the land—a symbol of new life heralding future growth for the kingdom.' A port area, the city borders the Red Sea and is the second-most populated in the Middle Eastern country. When complete, the skyscraper will join other architectural marvels in Jeddah, such as the Penang Floating Mosque and Al Balad, the town's historic center featuring homes from coral. The design is based on palm fronds, seen here. The building is designed in a neo-futuristic style, an avant-garde aesthetic often underpinned by the use of world-class technology and a rethinking of both the form and function of developments. Renderings show a singular, slender tower, which subtly tapers towards its apex. As Smith and Gill explain, the shape is inspired by new palm fronds, which are abundant in Saudi Arabia. Though the design is meant to honor its Saudi Arabian origins, it also represent the pinnacle of supertall design and the technological evolution that has allowed such monumental design to become a reality. 'The geometry of the tower, starting at the base as a single tripod form then gradually separating at the spire, is tied to the wind performance characteristics of the tower—an analogy of new growth fused with technology,' the pair add. Jeddah Tower's construction started back in 2013 but was paused in 2018. Its contractor, the Binladin Group, was taken off the project following the the 2017–2019 Saudi Arabian purge when its president, Bakr bin Laden, half-brother to Osama bin Laden, was arrested. The COVID-19 pandemic resulted in further delays; though in September 2023 Dezeen reported that construction had restarted. Jeddah Tower, formerly known as Kingdom Tower, under construction in 2018. 'Jeddah Tower construction has restarted…the tower is expected to be completed within four to five years,' the Jeddah Economic Company (JEC), the developer, confirms in a statement to AD . Before it was halted, builders had finished about a third of the building. As of January 2025, 60 floors of the total 157 floors have been built, totaling over 40% of the final build. When completed, the tower will stand at around 3,281 feet, or one kilometer. It will be about 564 feet taller than the Burj Khalifa in Dubai, designed by Smith while he was working at Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, which currently holds the record for the world's tallest skyscraper. The 2017 Saudi Arabian anticorruption purge resulted in key backers of the project, including the Saudi Binladin Group's chair Bakr bin Laden, being detained. As the original main contractor, responsible for 33% ownership of the supertall tower, the reputational issues of the Saudi Binladin Group spurred contract restructuring and re-tenders. Additionally, the pandemic further disrupted supply chains and labor, slowing overall progress of the construction of the Jeddah Tower. Similar to the Burj Khalifa, Jeddah Tower is expected to be a mixed-use building, offering both residential, commercial, and office space. There will also be an observation deck (currently planned to be the world's tallest), a Four Seasons hotel, and a 98-foot-diameter outdoor balcony, which was originally designed as a helipad. In the aftermath of delays and financial troubles, the record-breaking tower is now expected to be completed around 2028, based on recent plans. As of June of 2025, 70 floors have been completed. UAE Passport Ranks as 8th Most Powerful Globally
The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has solidified its position among the world's most powerful passports, climbing to 8th place in the 2025 Henley Passport Index – a remarkable rise from 42nd a decade ago that reflects the country's expanding diplomatic reach and visa liberalisation efforts. UAE passport holders can now travel to 185 destinations without a prior visa, making it the highest-ranked Middle Eastern nation and the only major riser to break into the global Top 10 in recent years. The Henley Passport Index, which is compiled from exclusive travel data provided by the International Air Transport Association (IATA), shows an increasing shift in global mobility power towards Asia and the Gulf region, with emerging economies making steady gains as traditional Western powers experience declines. 'The UAE stands out as a model of strategic diplomacy,' said Dr. Christian H. Kaelin, chairman of Henley & Partners. 'Its rise reflects years of consistent efforts to build reciprocal visa agreements.' China has also significantly expanded its visa openness, now granting visa-free entry to 75 countries, including all Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) members, various South American nations, and some European states — helping boost mobility for GCC citizens. India has climbed eight spots to 77th, while China ranks 60th, both among the fastest risers in recent years. By contrast, the United States has slipped to 10th place, offering visa-free access to 182 destinations, its lowest ranking in two decades. The United Kingdom now ranks 6th, down from first place in 2015. Other countries experiencing declines include Venezuela, which fell 15 places to 45th, and Canada, which dropped four spots. 'Passport power increasingly reflects active diplomacy and global engagement. Citizens from traditional powers like the US and UK are seeking alternative citizenship and residence options amid rising geopolitical uncertainty,' said Steffen.
