In conversation with Bournemouth and Mexico star Julian Araujo

CNN29-07-2025
Arguably more so than any of his Bournemouth teammates, Julián Araujo is well used to life in America, with the 23-year-old defender born in California in 2001, though he now represents Mexico by virtue of being able to play for either country. The breakout LA Galaxy star got a dream move to Barcelona in 2023 but his dreams never came to fruition, and he moved to the Cherries the following year. Now in the midst of the Premier League Summer Series, with Bournemouth facing Manchester United in Chicago on Wednesday off the back of a comprehensive 3-0 win over Everton last weekend in New Jersey, Araujo has been discussing the importance of pre-season, and his hopes with both club and country with CNN Espanol's Elizabeth Perez.

Barcelona to register goalkeeper García after league confirms long-term injury to Ter Stegen

MADRID (AP) — Barcelona will be able to register newly signed goalkeeper Joan García for the new season after the Spanish league confirmed a long-term injury to Marc-André ter Stegen, the club said Wednesday. With the ruling, Barcelona is allowed to clear some salary-cap space and more easily register other players without breaching financial fair play rules. 'Barcelona hereby announces that La Liga's Medical Committee has ruled that goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen's injury meets the long-term injury criteria established by current regulations,' it said. 'The club will proceed tomorrow to immediately formalize the registration of player Joan García.' The length of the injury had sparked a dispute between Barcelona and Ter Stegen, who initially refused to sign the medical report that the Catalan club had to send to the league. The 33-year-old goalkeeper said it would take about three months for him to recover from lower back surgery last month. The club, however, said it would take longer and wanted to add him to the long-term injury list. After Ter Stegen refused to sign, the club opened a disciplinary proceeding and stripped him of his captaincy. It reinstated him after he signed the report last week. Ter Stegen said after signing the report that he never intended to make it difficult for Barcelona to sign new players, and only wanted to be able to return to action as soon as possible. He said "these past few months have been especially difficult for me, both physically and personally.' Ter Stegen missed nearly all of last season because of a knee injury, and in 2023 he missed about two months because of another back operation. Iñaki Peña and veteran Wojciech Szczęsny started in place of Ter Stegen last season. The club signed Espanyol goalkeeper García in June. ___ AP soccer:

Barcelona's Ter Stegen validated as long-term injury by La Liga

Barcelona announced Wednesday the long-term injury validation of goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen by the Spanish league, meaning the club can register new signing Joan Garcia without breaking financial fair play rules. "LaLiga's Medical Committee has ruled that goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen's injury meets the long-term injury criteria established by current regulations," Barcelona said in a statement on their website. "The club will proceed tomorrow (Thursday) to immediately formalise the registration of player Joan Garcia." After two seasons marred by serious injuries, Barcelona captain Ter Stegen underwent back surgery last month. However, the 33-year-old had refused up until last Friday to release his medical details as Barcelona tried to have him classified by La Liga as a long-term injury, which would allow them to deduct part of his pay from their official wage bill. The Catalan club had planned to use the German's long-term absence to register their new recruits while remaining within the financial fair play rules. In addition to the recruitment of 24-year-old shotstopper Garcia, Barcelona extended the contract of veteran Polish goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny this summer. ati/cyj/nf/nr
