Tariff bite missing in US inflation, Indian rupee to rise on Fed cut hopes
The 1-month non-deliverable forward indicated the rupee will open in the 87.58-87.62 range versus the U.S. dollar, compared with Tuesday's close of 87.7125.
The rupee may get 'only modest relief' from the boost in Fed rate cut expectations, a currency trader at a Mumbai-based bank said.
Uncertainty over U.S. tariffs remains the dominant drag on sentiment, he noted, adding that the upcoming Trump-Putin summit is a key risk event that could sway the currency's direction.

Dollar, US yields drop
The dollar index dropped on Tuesday and near maturity U.S. yields declined after the highly-anticipated U.S. July inflation reading indicated Trump's tariff regime had yet to filter down to consumer prices.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi urged the country on Friday to move towards more self-reliance, manufacture everything from fertilisers to jet engines and EV batteries, and vowed to protect farmers in the face of a trade conflict with Washington. With the punishing tariffs imposed on Indian exports by US President Donald Trump expected to hurt growth in the world's fastest growing major economy, Modi announced lower goods and services taxes (GST) from October — a move that could help boost consumption. He also announced India would set up a new defence system called 'Sudarshan Chakra' in the aftermath of India's four-day military conflict with Pakistan in May. He did not elaborate but a government statement said the system is aimed at neutralising enemy infiltrations and enhancing India's offensive capabilities. Indian defence and policy circles have informally referred to the Russian S-400 air defence system — which played a key role during the fighting with Pakistan — as Sudarshan Chakra, after a Hindu mythological weapon. The new import tax will raise duties on some Indian exports to as high as 50% — among the highest levied on any US trading partner. Modi has never spoken about the tariffs directly, only alluding to them in a speech last week, where he swore to protect the interests of farmers, even if it came at a personal price. Farmers are a key political constituency in India and they violently protested against Modi's last big push to reform the sector, forcing him to repeal three farm laws in 2021 in what was a rare defeat for him. Tax cuts to boost consumption Although local manufacturing and self-reliance have been Modi's key focus areas for years now, the push is seen to have gained urgency amid ongoing global trade tensions and supply chain disruptions. "The need of the hour is to take a resolve for building a strong India ... ISLAMABAD: The Sensitive Price Index-based inflation witnessed an increase of 0.31 percent for the week ended August 13, 2025 compared to 0.05per cent in the previous week. Major increase is observed in the prices of tomatoes 12.62per cent, chicken 4.68per cent, eggs 2.11percent, onions 1.98per cent, garlic 1.60 percent, wheat flour1.44per cent, gur1.04per cent, maash0.52per cent and firewood 0.17 per cent. On the other hand, decrease is observed in the prices of bananas 2.52per cent, potatoes 1.65 per cent, pulse gram0.84per cent, pulse moong0.73per cent, LPG 0.36per cent, masoor0.29per cent, vegetable ghee 1kg 0.10per cent, salt powdered 0.06per cent and rice Irri-6/9 0.04per cent. IWT: India steps up its jingoistic rhetoric
NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi said Friday that India is seeking self-reliance in energy independence and the development of its own powerful defence systems, vowing to defend his country's interests 'like a wall'. Modi delivered his annual Independence Day address from the imposing ramparts of New Delhi's Red Fort at a time when India faces intense pressure and threats of additional tariffs from the United States. 'Self-reliance is the foundation of developed India,' Modi said after a flypast of military helicopters scattered flower petals above an invited crowd of thousands. 'Freedom becomes meaningless if someone becomes too dependent on others'. Ties between New Delhi and Washington have been strained by Trump's ultimatum that India end its purchases of Russian oil, a key source of revenue for Moscow as it wages its military offensive in Ukraine. Modi also honoured the Indian armed forces, which took part in a four-day conflict with arch-rival Pakistan that ended in a ceasefire on May 10. 'India will give a befitting reply to any other misadventure by the enemy,' he added, and referred to New Delhi's suspension of its cross-border water sharing treaty with Pakistan. 'India has decided that blood and water will not flow together,' he added. India has said it 'stands ready' to support efforts to end the Ukraine war and endorses a summit to be held between Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska on Friday. But the United States says it will double new import tariffs on India from 25 percent to 50 percent by August 27 if New Delhi does not switch crude suppliers. 'We know that we remain dependent on many countries to meet our energy needs', said Modi, leader of the world's most populous nation and fifth-biggest economy. 'But to build a truly self-reliant India, we must achieve energy independence.' US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, in a statement congratulating India's Independence Day, said the relations between the two nations were 'consequential and far-reaching', and wanted to 'ensure a brighter future for both'. Modi urged scientists and engineers to focus on building key sectors and technologies including fighter jet engines, semiconductor chips and military hardware systems. 'We will have India-made semiconductor chips in the market by the year's end,' Modi said. He added that the country was also working towards building a space station and would have a 'defence shield' in the next decade, without giving further details.
