Film hailed as 'one of the greatest of all time' now streaming on Amazon Prime
A film described as 'a triumph' and 'a relentless force' by critics is now available to stream on Amazon Prime Video.
Starring Tom Hardy, Ewan McGregor, Orlando Bloom, and Jason Isaacs, to name a few, Black Hawk Down was released in 2001 and is now regarded as one of the 'greatest' war films ever made.
The highly intense action flick is based on the story of the Black Hawk helicopter that was shot down during the Battle of Mogadishu.
It saw US forces attempt to bring down Somali National Alliance (SNA) Leader Mohammed Farah Aidid by capturing some of his top aides.
However, the mission went awry when two of the US' Black Hawk aircraft were struck, plunging the American soldiers into a deadly fight with the Somalis.
Also known now as the Black Hawk Down Incident, the battle led to the death of at least 18 Americans and an estimated 200 Somalis, plus many more were wounded.
It starred a whole host of established actors, including Jason Isaacs (Picture: Revolution/Kobal/Shutterstock)
A plot synopsis for the film reads: 'The story of 160 elite US soldiers who dropped into Mogadishu in October 1993 to capture two top lieutenants of a renegade warlord but found themselves in a desperate battle with a large force of heavily armed Somalis.'
It received two Oscars for best editing and best sound and grossed a respectable $173million (£129m), but on a high $92m (£69m) budget.
Meanwhile, critics have long lauded director Ridley Scott for capturing 'commanding' visuals and creating a 'compelling account' of true events.
On review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, Black Hawk Down has a 76% score from critics and 88% from audience reviews, which are not to be sniffed at.
Sharing their thoughts, Keith Garlington of Keith & the Movies writes: 'Black Hawk Down is an intense, visceral experience. It's gritty action one minute and deeply moving the next. But it never loses sight of its main focus – the soldiers.'
'Black Hawk Down makes that point without preachment, in precise and pitiless imagery. And for that reason alone it takes its place on the very short list of the unforgettable movies about war and its ineradicable and immeasurable costs', added Time Magazine's Richard Schickel.
However, the movie also attracted backlash for historical inaccuracies (Picture: Releasing/THA/Shutterstock)
Jimmy O of Film Snobs declared Black Hawk Down the 'gold standard for war films', while Alex Sandell of Juicy Cerebellum called it 'beautiful in its ugliness, and sad in its beauty.'
'It's hard to walk out of this movie without feeling shaken', admitted Cynthia Fuchs of the Philadelphia City Paper, as Jeffrey Chen of Window to the Movies praised the 'realistic battle sequences' for 'magnifying the difficulty of the choice between valuing life and valuing war efficiency.'
But while Black Hawk Down certainly hasn't been short on glowing reviews over the years, it's also received backlash.
Many have accused it of historical inaccuracies and wrongly influencing the way people remember the Battle of Mogadishu with its creative liberties.
Some of the inaccuracies raised include not correctly portraying why American troops were in Somalia and failing to show that the real-life battle lasted between 18 and 24 hours.
Team Red, White & Blue also wrote in their list of 10 inaccuracies that 'the film leads viewers to believe the purpose of the operation was to destabilise the Somali government and bring humanitarian aid to the people. And that's not an accurate representation of the history.'

They further claim the film 'only represents a small fraction of the servicemen involved' when, in reality, '450 men were deployed to Somalia as part of Task Force Ranger to execute Operation Gothic Serpent.'
So it's safe to say that while those who love Black Hawk Down can't speak highly enough of it, there are people who just can't get on board.
Regardless, it remains a conversation still over 30 years later, having also helped propel now well-established, award-winning actor Hardy to prominence, given how this was his very first role.
Stream Black Hawk Down now on Amazon Prime Video.

Love Island in fakery row as Yas references outside world AGAIN and Dejon breaks the fourth wall
Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) LOVE Island has been engulfed in yet another fakery row as Yasmin Pettet made even more references to the outside world. On last night's edition of Unseen Bits on ITV2, users were left confused by her behaviour. Sign up for the Entertainment newsletter Sign up 6 Editorial use only. No merchandising. No commercial use. Feeling tired, she decided to take a light jog around the room to wake herself up. Explaining her reasoning whilst running: "I'm just gonna do a light jog. Just a light one, nothing too strenuous. "If I sit down, my eyes are just closing. I'm shutting down. AI shut down." She added: "The robot is shutting down." The girls were all laughing at the strange scene as Megan sarcastically remarked: "She needs oil or something." As she carried on with her exercises, Yas continued: "I hope I don't get dizzy. "System update guys. YasGPT's got a system update. I'm gonna turn around now." Before getting up and leaving the room with Angel, Megan added: "The fact you're still going, I need a wee." Yas then added: "I'm just gonna keep doing it till I get bored." Viewers confused as Love Island star makes reference to fan nickname for her and ask 'how does she know?' On Instagram, one confused fan remarked: "Would love to know how she knows about AI and yas GPT. "Wait she referred to herself as YasGPT?! 4th wall broken again." This comes as fans of Love Island have also accused Dejon Noel-Williams of breaking the fourth wall. Taking to fan forum social media platform Reddit, one fan wrote: "Recently the producers have been airing a lot of clips with references to the cameras, prize money etc. This is unusual. "It's made me wonder, especially as Dejon seems to be using these references in the hope that his arguments won't be aired, how much has been cut previously? "What have we missed in the goal of suspending our disbelief and why have the producers decided to switch up?" They added: "I know they've cut out bombshells talking about the outside in previous seasons, but is there more we're missing this season?" Replying back, another loyal viewer added: "I wonder if producers have realized what dejons plan is (talking abt the cameras in hopes that the convo doesnt get aired) and have decided to show us the truth. System update guys. YasGPT's got a system update. Yasmin Pettet "OR if he talks about the cameras so much that they have no choice but to air it." The show has come under fire before for this technique as Islanders have actively referenced the prize money on screen. In previous scenes, Shakira Khan clashed with partner Conor Phillips over a comment made by co-star Harrison Solomon. Shakira told her former partner that her words had been "twisted" as she accused the guys of being 'game players' who want the monetary prize. She then shot back: "Of course they have things to gain from it. The biggest f*****g game players about. £25 f*****g k." At the time, one fan wrote "Shakira breaking the fourth wall by mentioning the prize money." As a second user stated: "This is the first time in Love Island history. I think I've actually seen the contestants talk about wanting to win the money and actually naming the prize." 6 Fans have noticed that contestants like Dejon have actively referenced the format of the show on-screen Credit: Shutterstock Editorial 6 Angel Swift accompanied the girls during the encounter Credit: Instagram / ITV2 6 Yas wanted to wake herself up by jogging as she felt tired Credit: Instagram / ITV2 Love Island continues on ITV2 and is available on ITVX.

Lindsay Lohan's top 5 movies as she returns for Freakier Friday
Freakier Friday: Jamie Lee Curtis stars in official trailer Lindsay Lohan and Jamie Lee Curtis are back as mother and daughter in Disney's anticipated sequel, Freakier Friday. Contrary to popular belief, the pair are not 'reuniting' for this project. Instead, as Curtis boldly declared at the film's London premiere, they have always been "united." They are and have remained friends since the original Freaky Friday was released over 20 years ago. Fittingly landing in cinemas this Friday (August 8), Freakier Friday is similarly based on characters from Mary Rodgers's 1972 novel. But this time it isn't just Anna (Lohan) and her mother Tess (Curtis) who fall victim to a supernatural body swap. Other members of their family are drawn into the magical affair, which forces them to see life through each other's eyes. As fans gear up for Lohan's return to the silver screen, here are her top five films. Confessions Of A Teenage Drama Queen is an underrated gem (Image: George Kraychyk/Walt Disney/Kobal/REX/Shutterstock ) Landing in fifth place is this 2004 family flick directed by Sara Sugarman. Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen tells an all-too-familiar tale of a teen who will do anything to be the centre of attention. The synopsis reads: "A teenage girl is convinced that her home city revolves around her until her family packs up and moves to the suburbs, where she finds herself competing for attention." Lohan stars as the titular teenager, Mary Elizabeth, whose quest for popularity is foiled by mean girl Carla Santini (played by Megan Fox). While the light-hearted comedy may not win over adult viewers, which is likely why it scored a sour 14% on Rotten Tomatoes, it hits all the marks for young audiences. Confessions of A Teenage Drama Queen is streaming now on Disney+. Irish Wish is a blend of the fantasy and romance genre (Image: Netflix ) Lohan returned to her spooky Freaky Friday roots in this charming 2024 romance. Set in Ireland, Irish Wish was directed by famed producer Janeen Damian. It follows book editor Maddie (Lohan), whose wish to marry her crush comes true. However, she soon discovers that her husband-to-be is far from what she envisioned. Netflix's synopsis reads: "Maddie's dream guy is days away from marrying her best friend when a wish for true love made on an ancient stone in Ireland magically alters her fate." The romcom features an entertaining love triangle with Outlander's Ed Speleers as one of Lohan's love interests. If this drama slipped under your radar, now's the time to tune in. Irish Wish is streaming now on Netflix. Freaky Friday is still a riot 22 years on (Image: PA) Arguably one of the most iconic Disney flicks of all time, Freaky Friday could easily climb to the top of this list. Unfortunately, Lohan has too many excellent films. The synopsis reads: "Tess and her daughter, Anna, do not get along. However, things take a turn when, in a freak incident, they switch bodies and are forced to live each other's lives." Directed by Mark Waters, who also helmed Mean Girls, the family comedy boasts a stellar cast. Its leading duo are joined by NCIS' Mark Harmon, One Tree Hill alum Chad Michael Murray and Thelma & Louise star Stephen Tobolowsky. Boasting an impressive 88% Rotten Tomatoes score, this Y2K flick has definitely stood the test of time. Freaky Friday is streaming now on Disney+. The Parent Trap is a must-watch (Image: Disney+) In second place comes The Parent Trap, which features one of Lohan's finest performances. Just 12 years old at the time, Lohan stars as separated twins Hallie and Annie, who stumble upon each other during summer camp. The synopsis reads: "Identical twins, separated shortly after birth when their parents divorce, unexpectedly meet at a summer camp. Will their scheme to switch places result in reuniting their family?" Despite sharing the screen with talented actors, including Dennis Quaid and the late Natasha Richardson, Lohan shines. Although it doesn't clinch the number one spot, this Nancy Meyers-directed comedy is a must-watch. The Parent Trap is streaming now on Disney+. Mean Girls is still Lohan's best film (Image: Michael Gibson/Paramount/Kobal/REX/Shutterstock) Claiming the victory is Mean Girls, which has maintained its grip on pop culture for decades. Also directed by Mark Waters, it brilliantly captures the quirks of teenagerhood. The synopsis reads: "Cady joins a public school in Illinois. Her two classmates warn her to stay away from a coterie of girls led by queen bee Regina, but Cady joins them. However, she gets smitten with Regina's ex-love." From its iconic one-liners to its impressive ensemble, including Rachel McAdams and Tina Fey, it doesn't get better than this 2004 comedy. Mean Girls is streaming now on Netflix. Freakier Friday lands in cinemas on Friday, August 8

Eerie ghost town on fringe of Las Vegas thousands flock to every year
Goodsprings, Nevada, is a ghost town located just 30 minutes outside of Las Vegas - and it's proving incredibly popular with tourists, with thousands flocking in each year Located in the middle of nowhere and allegedly haunted, the ghost town of Goodsprings is far from the most obvious tourist destination. Coupled with its proximity to the dazzling lights of Las Vegas, it would be easy for Goodsprings to be overlooked. But, despite its spooky history and sparse amenities, the town finds itself subject to thousands of visitors every year. Just half an hour away from the city's bustling strip and vibrant nightlife, life in Goodsprings could not be more different. Home to around 200 residents, this quiet town at the base of the Spring Mountains in the Nevada desert was once a bustling mining hub. In its heyday in the early 1900s, it housed 800 inhabitants and boasted amenities such as a hospital, hotels and a school - which remarkably still operates today, albeit with only two pupils on its roll. However, as the ore reserves in the Goodsprings mines dwindled, so did its populace. In 1942, the town served as the base for a special search mission following the tragic plane crash that claimed the life of actress Carole Lombard. Her aircraft crashed into Potosi Mountain, and her husband, Hollywood legend Clark Gable, anxiously awaited news at Goodsprings' Pioneer Saloon. It's said that Gable's cigar burns can still be seen on the Saloon's bar to this day. Consequently, there's a memorial room at the Pioneer honouring its connection to the iconic couple. Today, Goodsprings has a somewhat eerie aura. A drive through the town on its dusty roads evokes a spooky feeling. Often the subject of folk tales and ghost hunts, Reddit users have shared their experiences of visiting the town. One stated: "When I went to Goodsprings a few years back with my wife, it was completely dead. "No one was outside or driving around, it looked like a wild west ghost town that time had forgotten". Despite its remote location, the owners of the Pioneer Saloon are eager to provide a warm welcome to visitors. Stephen Staats, also known as Old Man Liver, purchased the iconic pub in 2021 and discovered Goodsprings' unique place in pop culture. The town serves as the starting point for the cult classic video game Fallout: New Vegas, which features the main character revived after being buried alive in Goodsprings cemetery. Many of the game's characters are based on real-life residents, and the Pioneer itself is featured in the game, rebranded as the Prospector Saloon. Recognising the town's popularity, Staats hosted a Fallout-themed event on National Video Game Day, July 8, in 2022. He expected "maybe 100 in a crazy world", but was taken aback when more than a thousand fans showed up. Since then, it has grown year on year, and following the launch of the acclaimed Amazon Prime Video series based off the game, 6,420 people visited Goodsprings in 2024. Fallout fans have praised the town's atmosphere and welcoming spirit on Reddit, with one saying: "The locals love it, and it's kind of their only form of tourism." Another, who visited before Staats took over the Pioneer, said: "They were incredibly friendly and welcoming both times I went, and there's even a marble wall inscribed with the town's residents since it's founding, movies and TV shows that have filmed there, all sorts of stuff." With a second season of the Amazon Prime show greenlit and likely to be set in and around 'New Vegas', Goodsprings could become an unlikely destination to rival the dazzling city that casts its wide shadow over the Nevada desert.
