WWE star breaks 40-year record with controversial Night of Champions win

Metro6 hours ago

A major WWE superstar made history at Night of Champions with a record breaking victory.
The wrestling giant is in Saudi Arabia this evening and the premium live event (PLE) kicked off on Netflix with the King of the Ring final between Cody Rhodes and Randy Orton.
The two delivered an exceptional match to start the show, with the American Nightmare pulling out all the stops to secure the win.
Despite the crowd being firmly behind his opponent, Cody earned the crown and is now only the third man – after wrestling legends Harley Race and Ken Shamrock in 1986 and 1998 respectively – to win King of the Ring and hold the NWA Worlds Championship.
However, the so-called 'quarterback' of WWE has also secured a himself a spot in the record books.

By matching the two Hall of Famers, he's also become the first person in ever to win the NWA Worlds Championship, King of the Ring and WWE Championship since the inaugural tournament in 1985.
The son of the late, great Dusty Rhodes has been a fan favourite since returning to WWE at WrestleMania 38 in 2022.
In recent weeks, some corners of the audience have started to turn against Cody, with crowds in London and now Saudi Arabia booing him in favour of the likes of John Cena and Randy Orton.
That continued on Saturday, with the former world champion pushing Orton into an exposed turnbuckle – with his opponent has untied – to score a win.
After the bell, he took the unprecedented move of acknowledging the way the audience have started to cheer the likes of Orton, Cena and Jey Uso over Cody himself.

Netflix is quietly adding ‘tearjerking' fan favourite

Film lovers, mark your calendars as a perfect story of love and loss is set to be added to Netflix next month. We Live In Time is finally finding its home on Netflix UK on July 5, but warning, prepare for all the feels. It's a film that will make you laugh and cry, but most importantly, it teaches the audience that time is precious, following themes of grief in such a beautiful way that connects with so many watching. Starring the Hollywood dream team, Andrew Garfield and Florence Pugh, We Live in Time will take you on a bittersweet journey through years of love, heartbreak, and enforcing the age-old message that life is a ticking time bomb. It follows the decade‑long, non-linear journey of Almut Brühl (Pugh), an ambitious chef, and Tobias Durand (Garfield), a marketing exec for Weetabix, as their relationship weaves through love, family, illness and everything in between. Hopeless romantics will need to grab the tissues as the film cleverly explores the life cycle of a relationship, cutting between timelines, past and present snapshots of a couple's story show how their love weathers recovery, birth and death. Directed by John Crowley, the film was released earlier this year and had cinema-goers sobbing and blubbering throughout the beautiful time-hopping story. Reviews say 'this broken timeline approach is part puzzle, part emotional puzzle – and more often than not, it works', while it was also echoed that the structure mostly avoids confusion thanks to cues like pregnancy bump and baby Ella's presence. In our four-star Metro review, Tori Brazier wrote that 'it is a wholesome and touching portrayal of a relationship acted out by two of the UK's biggest stars right now. And it's the perfect movie for when you want to sit in your feelings and be taken on an unashamedly emotional journey.' Still, not everyone bought in. The Telegraph described it as 'calamitous' and argued that some emotional impact is lost when you see outcomes before knowing their back stories. Viewers praised the film for how 'intimate' it felt – 'like watching a real couple in their private moments instead of watching a movie couple sharing big romantic gestures,' wrote @meb6x on Reddit. Another fan, @literary_bonna, described the box office hit as 'a classic 'wish you were them' love story'. More Trending With a 79% Rotten Tomatoes score, critics have labelled the film as a 'powerful melodrama'. If you did end up spending your weekly budget on the cinema trip (obviously you had to get that Tango ice blast), then you will be delighted to know that you can watch this firm fan fave again and again and again when it lands on Netflix next week. Whether you want to pretend you have something in your eye or you just need to weep on the sofa, We Live In Time is guaranteed to take you on an emotional rollercoaster, so buckle up! WWE fans in awe as 'freakish' star finally debuts after 12-month wait

WWE fans were stunned as a new face made a massive impression at Night of Champions 2025. Former New Japan Pro Wrestling star Hikuleo – who was previously a member of Bullet Club and Guerrillas of Destiny – was reported to have signed with the company back in July 2024. It's been a year since the towering star left NJPW, and 11 months since he was said to have inked his WWE deal. Finally, he reappeared and made his debut during Saturday's Night of Champions event in Saudi Arabia just hours after a historic King of the Ring win for Cody Rhodes. He had a defining role to play in the United States Title match which saw Jacob Fatu putting his gold on the line against Solo Sikoa. After Tonga Loa returned from a seven month injury layoff to turn the tide in Sikoa's favour, the former Bloodline enforcer had another trick up his sleeve with Hikuleo appearing to cost Fatu the title. Taking to X after the match, WWE boss Triple H retweeted a photo of Solo celebrating with his allies and wrote: 'By any means necessary…#WWENOC' It's been a long wait, but now he's joined his for GoD teammates – and real life cousin Loa and brother Tama Tonga – on the WWE main roster. Commentators Michael Cole and Wade Barrett avoided saying Hikuleo's name, which suggests a change in moniker is on the horizon for the newcomer, who stands at 6ft 8ins. However, Preston-born Barrett immediately hyped up the big man, branding him an 'absolute freak', while fans watching on Netflix were in awe of his size. 'Huge surprise with Hikuleo helping Solo! Great twist in the title match. #WWENOC,' raved @LaurenMill62673 on X. 'HIKULEO IS HUGE MY GOD,' shouted @ChefOsco, with plenty of fans stunned by his hulking frame. 'Hikuleo is him! Dude is massive af. #WWENOC,' added @ShinTails77. He's a newcomer to WWE fans, having only recently appeared in so-called dark matches, which are off-air bouts for the live crowd. In his first on June 13, he overcame Pretty Deadly's Kit Wilson, while last week he beat Ryan Matthias before SmackDown. Before joining WWE, he made his name in New Japan, where he became Strong Openweight Tag Team Champion on two occasions with El Phantasmo, while the duo also won the IWPT Tag Team Titles.
