Bradford culture group hopes £3m revamp will boost footfall
A Bradford charity has been awarded £3m to transform its building into an arts and culture centre.The African Caribbean Achievement Project (ACAP) received a capital grant from Bradford 2025 UK City of Culture, partly funded by Bradford Council.The cash will go towards renovating ACAP's building on Claremont, in the Great Horton area, to provide space for music, dance, visual arts and drama.Claudia McFarlane from ACAP said the group hoped to create "somewhere really visually pleasing" to attract more people through its doors.
She said: "Although the state of the building doesn't put people off accessing it, with a newly refurbished space you can see how much more appealing that would be."Ms McFarlane said the revamped facility would help "put our culture on the map".She said: "As African and Caribbean people, we have contributed a lot to the city in terms of arts and culture so it's an opportunity for us to highlight some of the things that we've been doing in that space."
'Momentous year'
Councillor Sarah Ferriby, Bradford Council's executive member for healthy people and places, said: "It's clear that this funding is going to have huge benefits for ACAP's current users and attracting new visitors and audiences."We look forward to the scheme being completed and flourishing."Dan Bates, executive director of Bradford 2025 UK City of Culture, added: "It's thrilling to see the growth of Bradford's creative infrastructure as we progress through this momentous year for the city and district."The work that ACAP do with communities of African and Caribbean descent across Bradford will be able to expand even further with this renovation, and we're proud to be a part of this next chapter in their journey."

Huge new island waterpark to open with 30 slides and the world's longest lazy river
ROYAL Caribbean is launching an entire new island in 2027 and it will be home to seven neighborhoods - including a huge Waterpark. Perfect Day Mexico is expected to launch in autumn 2027 as the cruise company's newest private island and at the heart of the island will be Loco Waterpark. 4 4 The waterpark will have over 30 waterslides, a wave pool and waterslide tower measuring more than 170ft tall called Jaguar's Peak. There will also be hydrolaunch slides that shoot riders into the air and the world's first sombrero slide, modeled after Mexico's iconic sombrero. The park will feature adventure pools and slides for younger kids too. At Splash Cove, another central neighborhood on the island, there will be the longest lazy river in the world. Along the hour-long float there are multiple entry and exit points and there will be a number of float up bars. Each tube will even have a cupholder for beverages. And for those who feel a little more daring, there is the option of venturing through a crazy section of the river that has twists and turns with waves, rapids and spins. In the centre of all of this is a 100,000sqft pool - which is one of 10 across the island. Smaller children will be able to enjoy Royal Caribbean's largest Splashaway Bay with the first-ever Splashaway Cabanas nearby. The cruise line has partnered with Legacy Entertainment - a US-based design firm responsible for theme parks and attractions - to create the waterpark. Dubai hotel with world's largest waterpark The destination spans over 200 acres on Mexico's Caribbean Coast and in total will have seven neighbourhoods, with 12 dining options and 24 bars. Other neighbourhoods include El Hideaway - an adults-only neighbourhood. The neighbourhood will be the party zone with a party pool, swim-up bar and in-pool DJ. There will also be a new Ultimate Party Cabana for 20 guests, with its own pool and bar. In the Costa Beach Club neighbourhood, guests can make the most of the white sand beaches, heated infinity pool and Costa Beach Club restaurant. At Chill Beach North and South will be two miles of white sand beaches. Then at Fiesta Plaza, guests can make the most of live music and dance inspired by Mexico with live music and dance. Plus, the world's largest sombrero will be found on top of the Tipsy Sombrero bar which will serve classic Mexican drinks such as margaritas and cervezas. 4 Free-to-use loungers, umbrellas and towels will be at all of the beaches and pools at Perfect Day Mexico. Royal Caribbean is also due to launch the Royal Beach Club Paradise Island in December 2025. The first-of-its-kind Royal Beach Club in The Bahamas will combine the stunning beaches of Nassau's Paradise Island with Royal Caribbean's signature experiences. Visitors can purchase an all-inclusive day pass and enjoy unlimited dining, drinks and amenities, from The Floating Flamingo – the world's largest swim-up bar. Also opening, in 2026, is the Royal Beach Club Cozumel – which features stunning beaches, pools with swim-up bars, cabanas, snorkeling, kayaking and more. The 34-year-old visited a neonatal care unit in the west African country to help raise awareness of its work ahead of Soccer Aid, which raises money for Unicef, which funds the unit. Speaking after visiting the country's Abidjan capital, Mabuse said: "Visiting Cote d'Ivoire with Unicef UK showed me the first-hand impact of the importance of vital care for children and their parents – especially for those that are born prematurely. "My own baby was born prematurely, so seeing the work and meeting mums like Ouattara (one of the mothers at the care unit) brought everything home. I know how vital that care and support is in those early days. "Worldwide an estimated 4.8 million children died before reaching their fifth birthday in 2024 – deaths that were mostly preventable. "I also met incredible foster carers like Madame Massandje, who are changing children's lives and helping give them the start in life they deserve. Article continues below "These experiences showed me the real difference donations make. That's why I'm so proud to be part of Soccer Aid for Unicef – to help give every child a safe, healthy start in life." Mabuse's daughter, who she shares with husband Marius Iepure, was born 10 weeks premature in 2023. Speaking of her own experience, Mabuse said: "I remember the only way I could touch my child and have skin-on-skin was through this glass window – there's no mother who wants to experience that." Ouattara, who Mabuse met, had seen her first baby die without access to specialised support, however her second baby, Abdul, although born prematurely again, was rushed to the centre where they stayed for three weeks to receive the care needed to allow him to live healthily. The performer, who has also served as a judge on Dancing On Ice, witnessed a Unicef programme called Kangaroo Mother Care at the unit, which promotes the importance of skin-to-skin contact, which is proven to significantly boost survival rates of babies born prematurely, according to the charity. According to Unicef, globally in 2024 an estimated 4.8 million children died before reaching their fifth birthday, including 2.3 million newborns who died within the first 28 days of life. It says that in Cote D'Ivoire, lack of access to specialised care is one of the reasons that prematurity is the leading cause of death for children under five. A Unicef appeal film of Oti Mabuse's trip will feature during Soccer Aid, which will be broadcast on ITV1, ITVX, STV and STV Player at 6pm on Sunday, June 15.
