Time of India3 days ago
Porvorim:
MLAs in the Goa assembly on Thursday demanded that govt prepare a new Regional Plan for the state and not convert hills and hill slopes into settlement zones.
Aldona MLA Carlos Alvares Ferreira said that TCP minister Vishwajit Rane should be requested to create a new Regional Plan as the 2021 plan is dated.
He said that zone changes were done at lightning speed for outsiders, but Goans were suffering.
Ferreira said that according to the current Regional Plan, roads were designated as being 15 metres and 30 metres wide, which had become a contentious issue. He stated that structures that came up prior to the Regional Plan cannot be touched and govt should issue instructions to that effect.
Curtorim MLA Aleixo Reginaldo Lourenco said that there should be no change of zones on hills, hill slopes, and low-lying areas.
Siolim MLA Delilah Lobo said that the natural areas of comunidades had been converted into settlement zones, and the areas should be restored to their original state. Rane said that he would act according to her request.
Cumbharjua MLA Rajesh Faldessai urged the minister not to allow any development activities around the Unesco site at Old Goa, which has a 200-metre buffer zone.
Priol MLA Govind Gaude said that due to deforestation, many wild animals were entering villages, and the forest department should address the problem.

Why is Mathura Sridharan, Ohio's new solicitor general, being trolled?

Source: X/@OhioAG Indian-origin lawyer Mathura Sridharan, recently appointed as Ohio's 12th Solicitor General, has become the target of online trolling, much of it laced with racism and xenophobia. Her appointment, announced on July 31 by Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost, sparked a wave of derogatory comments questioning her Americanness and mocking her cultural identity, particularly her choice to wear a bindi. Yost, however, stood firmly by his decision. Sharing the news on X (formerly Twitter), he praised Sridharan's brilliance and qualifications: 'Mathura is brilliant… she won her argument at SCOTUS last year. Both the SGs she worked under (Flowers & Gaiser) recommended her. I told her when I originally hired her I needed her to argue with me. She does… All the time! Excited to promote her. She will serve Ohio well.' Source: The Federalist Society Despite her impressive credentials, some corners of the internet chose to focus on her heritage and appearance rather than her legal record. A particular point of contention was her wearing of a bindi, a traditional mark worn on the forehead, which for centuries has held cultural, spiritual, and aesthetic significance in South Asia. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Villas Prices In Dubai Might Be More Affordable Than You Think Villas In Dubai | Search Ads Get Quote Undo One user wrote, 'Well, the dot is discreet, but ultimately still visible.' Another commented, 'Why the f*** are you hiring some dothead pooja?' The comments didn't just stop at the bindi but one user even commented on her skin complexion, 'That jaundice doesn't look too good'. The Bindi: A mark of identity The bindi, sometimes referred to as a tikli, is far more than a decorative accessory. Rooted in Hindu traditions, it once symbolized everything from marital status to religious beliefs and caste. Spiritually, it's long been considered the ajna chakra—the point of consciousness or the third eye—in ancient Hindu philosophy. Traditionally made with vermilion, sandalwood paste, or sacred ash, the bindi has evolved over time. By the 20th century, it was common to use waxy substances like Vaseline to affix the red dot, while stencil-like bindi papers allowed wearers to experiment with geometric precision and ornate designs. Today, the bindi has expanded beyond its religious connotations, becoming a global fashion statement embraced by many, though often not without controversy. Sridharan's wearing of the bindi isn't an anomaly or act of defiance; it's simply a visible connection to her roots. Yet, in a political climate that increasingly scrutinizes identity, even such subtle expressions of culture can be weaponized.

'Rahul Gandhi is anti-India': Himanta Biswa Sarma's fresh jibe at Congress MP; accuses him of supporting only Bangladeshi, Pakistani Muslims

Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and Congress leader Rahul Gandhi (ANI images) NEW DELHI: Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Sunday launched a sharp attack on Congress leader Rahul Gandhi , calling him 'anti-national' and accusing him of supporting only Muslims from Bangladesh and Pakistan, as reported by news agency PTI. Speaking to reporters during a election campaign meeting in the Bodoland Territorial Region, Sarma also claimed that the Congress party does "not respect icons of Assam", such as the Kamakhya temple and spiritual reformer Mahapurush Srimanta Sankardeva. "Rahul Gandhi is an anti-India person. He is only with Bangladeshi and Pakistani Muslims. He is not with Indian Hindus, not even with Indian Muslims. Rahul Gandhi is an anti-national personality," Sarma alleged. He did not provide any specific reasons for labelling Rahul Gandhi, the current Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha, as anti-national. Just days before, Rahul Gandhi had criticized CM Sarma during his visit to Guwahati. Speaking at a party event in Chaygaon, Gandhi accused the Assam chief minister of acting like a 'king' and predicted that he would eventually end up in jail due to corruption charges. 'He thinks he is a 'raja', but he will not be in power for long. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Premium 1 BHK at Mahindra Citadel – Coming Soon! In response, Sarma dismissed the allegations with a strong reply with words and a hand gesture "Thenga" during a late-night press briefing. He stated that unlike Gandhi, he is a true son of Assam, raised by its soil and people. He accused the Congress of being stuck in outdated thinking and added, 'The joke is on him.'

Union cabinet secy challenges 7-year-old CAT orders, contempt notices in IFS officer Sanjeev Chaturvedi case

Dehradun: The Union cabinet secretary has approached Uttarakhand high court to seek the quashing of a seven-year-old Central Administrative Tribunal (CAT) order involving IFS officer Sanjeev Chaturvedi, and to challenge contempt notices issued by CAT. The notices, issued on May 21, 2025, pertained to non-compliance by cabinet secretary TV Somanathan with earlier CAT directions asking him, along with health secretary and central vigilance commission secretary, to submit documents related to the closure of some high-profile corruption cases, which were being investigated by Chaturvedi as chief vigilance officer in AIIMS-Delhi. The petition also sought to nullify CAT's Feb 23, 2023 orders, non-compliance of which gave rise to the contempt petition. The chief justice's bench listed the next hearing for Aug 28. The matter relates to the downgrading of the annual performance appraisal report (APAR) of Chaturvedi for 2015–16, during his central deputation at AIIMS-Delhi from June 2012 to June 2016. CAT had, on Apr 16, 2018, dismissed an application filed by the then cabinet secretary, observing, "Since the officer's central deputation was approved by the cabinet secretary, and that most of his prayers are also directed against cabinet secretary, he is a "necessary party to the proceedings. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Is this legal? It seeks the removal of the cabinet secretary from the list of respondents in the original CAT matter, praying that the name of DoPT secretary be added instead in the pending tribunal case. Chaturvedi had approached the Nainital circuit bench of CAT in July 2017 after his APAR was downgraded, and in Sept 2017, the tribunal stayed the downgrading order. In 2019, he had filed an application seeking documents regarding closure of several major corruption cases, an investigation he had initiated during his tenure as chief vigilance officer (CVO) at AIIMS, from June 2012 to Aug 2014, alleging that the downgrade was in retaliation for his anti-corruption investigations. During that period, Chaturvedi had handled nearly 200 corruption cases involving senior bureaucrats and doctors, including disciplinary action in 78 matters and charges in 87, with over 20 of those cases referred to CBI, prompting CAT to issue orders in February and March 2023 asking the cabinet secretary, health secretary, CVC and AIIMS Delhi to furnish relevant documents. When the officials failed to comply, Chaturvedi filed a contempt petition in Dec 2024, leading CAT in May 2025 to issue contempt notices to Somanathan, then health secretary Apurva Chandra and then CVC secretary P Daniel. Meanwhile, Chaturvedi's legal battle has seen unusual judicial churn. As of June 2025, a total of 14 judges have recused themselves from hearing matters related to him, the latest being ACJM Neha Kushwaha, who stepped away from a criminal defamation case Chaturvedi filed against CAT judge Manish Garg, citing personal proximity to another tribunal judge. The contempt notices followed a high court clarification in May 2024 that a previous stay did not apply to these top officials, thereby making them liable to comply with CAT's directives.
