Kolkata: The KMC on Saturday deployed earth movers to pull down shops and other structures that encroached on a govt plot on Prince Anwar Shah Road near Lord's crossing. The plot, owned by the state information and cultural affairs department at 355, Prince Anwar Shah Road, does not have a boundary wall, allowing encroachers a free run.
According to a KMC official, the drive was planned at the civic headquarters and was kept a secret to prevent the news from reaching the encroachers so that they did not get a chance to put up resistance. "We planned to conduct the drive with police without informing the encroachers about it, as that would have led to a ruckus and our work would have been hampered. Last time, the drive to oust encroachers from the state-owned plot was met with resistance.
So, we decided on this surprise drive," said a senior KMC official.
A KMC solid waste management official said the civic team was mobilised at the Lord's crossing around 1 pm for the demolition. The presence of a large posse of policemen helped civic officials continue with the drive unhindered. "When we left, it was late evening. By then, we had demolished 48 stalls to free up the govt land," said a civic official, adding it was a 30-cottah plot.

According to a KMC official, the civic body will need to barricade the land now and keep a watch on it.
Back in June 2024, chief minister Mamata Banerjee had mentioned the encroachment on the Prince Anwar Shah plot while speaking about govt properties and public spaces being taken over illegally. There was an attempt to free the land in 2018, but it was unsuccessful, she had said.
Within hours of Banerjee's announcement last year, a police team had visited the plot and collected the names, addresses and phone numbers of the stall owners there.
A KMC official had said they were demarcating a 7.5-cottah plot, while owners of the unauthorised structures on the land claimed it was 29-cottah.
Now that the illegal structures have been pulled down, the KMC will calculate the exact area and build a wall around it. Stalls selling food, vegetables and lottery tickets and a Trinamool office were among those that occupied the plot, said an official.

Shiv Sena (UBT) MLAs and minister Shambhuraj Desai face off in Maharashtra assembly
Shiv Sena (UBT) MLAs and Maharashtra minister Shambhuraj Desai on Tuesday traded barbs in the legislative assembly over the "delay" in securing a Central nod for removing encroachments on defence land in Bandra and rehabilitating slum-dwellers. Bandra East MLA Varun Sardesai , who belongs to Shiv Sena (UBT), said redevelopment of 9,483 shanties on the 42-acre defence land in his constituency has been held up as the Central government has not transferred this land to the state government. "You run the government in the Centre and Maharashtra. Why don't you follow up? Will the land be transferred to the state government, and will slum dwellers be relocated? The issue has been pending since 2017," said Sardesai. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Join new Free to Play WWII MMO War Thunder War Thunder Play Now Undo Responding on behalf of Housing Minister Eknath Shinde , state minister Desai said, "Shinde had sent four letters to the Centre. He has been following up on the matter". Alluding to the previous MVA government's tenure, he said no follow-up was taken between 2019 and 2022, drawing sharp reaction from Sena (UBT) MLAs. Live Events They hit back, saying Desai was also part of that government (headed by Uddhav Thackeray). Sena (UBT) leader Bhaskar Jadhav questioned why Desai was replying on behalf of Deputy Chief Minister Shinde and whether he had sought the Chair's permission. "Where is the (authorisation) letter?" he asked. Amid the uproar, the presiding officer adjourned the assembly for ten minutes. After the House reassembled, Speaker Rahul Narwekar said he had allowed the division of work on the request of Eknath Shinde and entrusted the responsibility of replying to issues related to the Housing and Urban Development Department during the legislature session to Shiv Sena ministers. Jadhav clarified that he was not criticising the Chair's decision but raised this issue since the Opposition was not happy with the replies given by ministers.

Zoho's Sridhar Vembu on how to make Indian cities livable like Singapore that limits car ownership through certificates
Zoho founder Sridhar Vembu has called for building extensive public transport networks across Indian cities to make them more livable, citing Singapore as a successful model that limits car ownership through policy innovation. 'I want to add that Singapore, one of the most advanced economies in the world and one of the most livable cities, relies extensively on public transport,' Vembu wrote on X. 'Singapore also limits the number of private cars through the mechanism of open market trading of Certificate of Entitlement (COE), which is required to own a car. The certificate itself can cost over SGD 100,000—on top of the car's price. Indian cities are far denser than Singapore. We have to build extensive public transport to make our cities livable. It can be done.' Vembu's remarks came in response to a post by MP Tejasvi Surya , who criticised the Karnataka government's Rs 18,500 crore tunnel road project in Bengaluru . Surya argued that the project serves only the top 10% of car owners while neglecting mass transit needs. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Domchanch: 1 Trick to Reduce Belly Fat? 'What the city actually needs are: 16,580 BMTC buses by 2031 (we have just 6,800 now) 317 km Metro by 2031 (only 78 km operational today) Yellow Line has been ready for four years but remains unopened. Over 20 flyover and road projects are stalled. Instead of addressing these issues, CM Siddaramaiah and DCM DK Shivakumar are pushing a vanity project that serves the few, not the many.' In June, the Karnataka cabinet approved two major underground tunnel corridors under a Build-Own-Operate-Transfer (BOOT) model. Private players will recover costs through tolls collected over 30 years. Deputy CM Shivakumar said global tenders would be floated 'in the next two or three days.' According to the project's detailed report, the 16.6 km tunnel from Esteem Mall in Hebbal to Silk Board Junction will cut travel time from 90 minutes to 45. Entry/exit ramps are proposed at Mehkri Circle, Race Course, and Lalbagh. The estimated toll for cars is Rs 330. Other proposed tolls include: Live Events Hebbal–Sarjapur/HSR Layout (16.3 km): Rs 320 Hebbal–Hosur Main Road (12.7 km): Rs 250 Hebbal–Seshadri Road (9 km): Rs 180 Mehkri Circle–Silk Board (12.5 km): Rs 245 Tolls are expected to rise annually by 5% (based on WPI), capped at 40%. Vembu's post prompted responses from several users on X. One asked, 'Sir, will the Indian public even accept something like Singapore's car ownership certification model? More importantly, do our policymakers even think in that direction?' Another user commented, 'Sridhar Sir, come to Delhi and I'll show you how car manufacturers shape public transport policy. Every day, at least 10,000 cars leave Delhi for Gurgaon—just to get to Cyber City. Why isn't there a direct Metro line from Delhi to Gurgaon? That's the real question.' A third user wrote, 'People often mistake public infrastructure for just bigger roads and bridges. But real infrastructure means building world-class public transport that even the elite prefer to use.'

India's trade deficit narrows to $18.78 billion in June
India's trade deficit for June 2025 narrowed to $18.78 billion, compared to $21.88 billion in May, government data showed Tuesday. Economists had expected the June trade deficit to be at $22.24 billion, according to a Reuters poll, compared to $21.88 billion in the previous month. The data comes amid ongoing trade talks with the US and other global partners. Despite Trump's tariff threats, India's exports to the U.S. in April–May rose to $17.25 billion from $14.17 billion last year. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Cardiologist Reveals: The Simple Morning Habit for a Flatter Belly After 50! Lulutox Undo The June data comes as the Centre continues to push structural reforms and global trade partnerships. The government has set a $1 trillion export target for FY26, after India's total exports touched an all-time high of $824.9 billion in FY25, marking a 6.01% increase over $778.1 billion in FY24. To support exports, schemes like the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) covering 14 sectors, from electronics to EV batteries, are being actively expanded. These efforts aim to reduce import dependency, boost domestic capacity, and improve India's position in global supply chains. Live Events India is also expanding its Free Trade Agreement (FTA) network. Recent FTAs with the UK and UAE are expected to help exporters, with negotiations also underway with the United States. Commerce Secretary Sunil Barthwal recently said FTAs were becoming 'a very critical enabler of the GCC ecosystem.' 'Manufacturing comparative advantage is no longer the benchmark for trade among nations,' Barthwal said at the CII Summit on Monday. He noted that India's innovation corridors would be strengthened through FTAs like the India–UK pact, which includes a dedicated chapter on innovation. More details on sector-wise performance and country-specific trade balances for June are expected later today from the Commerce Ministry.
