Perlis State Assembly Complex renamed Kompleks Seri Putra to honour former ruler

KANGAR: The Perlis State Legislative Assembly Complex has been renamed Kompleks Seri Putra in a ceremony here today.
The renaming of the complex in Persiaran Wawasan was proclaimed by Raja of Perlis Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin Jamalullail during a People's Tea Ceremony here held in conjunction with his 82nd birthday celebration.
Delivering the royal address on behalf of his father, Raja Muda of Perlis Tuanku Syed Faizuddin Putra Jamalullail said the complex was renamed in honour of his grandfather, Tuanku Syed Putra Jamalullail, a tribute to his service and legacy in the state.
"Tuanku Syed Putra was the first raja of Perlis after the enactment of the State Constitution on Feb 1, 1948.
"During his reign, the Perlis state assembly was established following the Legislative Council Election on Sept 24, 1955, which provided for nine seats.
"His contributions deserve lasting recognition."
Gracing the event were Raja Perempuan Perlis Tuanku Tengku Fauziah Tengku Abdul Rashid, Raja Puan Muda Perlis Tuanku Lailatul Shahreen Akashah Khalil and Menteri Besar Mohd Shukri Ramli.
Tuanku Syed Faizuddin said since his father officiated the complex on May 25, 2010, it has hosted 50 state assembly sittings.
"This building must continue to serve as a dignified venue for discourse, deliberation and the enactment of fair laws that safeguard the welfare of the people.
"Seek common ground in governing and advancing this state so that it stands on a par with others. Let this platform be a space to serve the people."
Tuanku Syed Faizuddin expressed appreciation to the menteri besar and the state administration for organising the event.

Sultan Nazrin opens new NRD office in Taiping

TAIPING: Sultan of Perak, Sultan Nazrin Muizzuddin Shah, officially opened the National Registration Department (NRD) of the Larut Matang and Selama District here today. The ceremony was also attended by the Raja Permaisuri of Perak, Tuanku Zara Salim; the Raja Muda of Perak, Raja Jaafar Raja Muda Musa; and the Raja Di Hilir of Perak, Raja Iskandar Dzurkarnain Sultan Idris Shah. Also present were Deputy Home Minister Datuk Seri Dr Shamsul Annuar Nasarah, Perak Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad, and Home Ministry Deputy Secretary-General (Policy and Control) Datuk Makhzan Mahyuddin. As a symbol of the official opening, Sultan Nazrin signed a plaque and later visited the office and exhibition. In his speech, Shamsul said the ministry, through the NRD, is responsible for ensuring that policies, laws, and regulations related to national registration are consistently implemented to meet public needs and expectations, while safeguarding national interests. "The registration of births and deaths, marriages, and citizenship are crucial records, especially in supporting the formulation and implementation of key national policies. "Taking these factors into account, the NRD is fully committed to delivering the best possible services to the public. "The delivery of quality, efficient, accurate, and people-friendly services in the interest of the nation is the NRD's quality policy, in line with the government's inclusive approach," he said. He noted that the RM10.5 million NRD office is one of 20 operating in Perak and the construction began on Sept 2, 2021, and was completed on April 22, 2024. "This office is a merger of the original offices that operated in the Wisma Persekutuan Taiping building since 1986 and the NRD branch in Kamunting, which had been operating since 2004 in the Kamunting sub-district. "Both offices underwent a rationalisation process and were combined into the current office. "Continuous improvement efforts have been made to ensure the quality of services provided aligns with the increasing population in this district," he added. He said the new office, built on a 4.05ha site, features attractive architecture and a corporate image, providing better facilities and infrastructure for the public. According to the Department of Statistics Malaysia's 2024 report, the population in the district increased by 14 per cent, reaching 313,400 compared to 269,600 in 2020. "The location is strategic, being close to the North-South Expressway and the West Coast Expressway, with geographical advantages, a spacious land area, and a more conducive office environment. "In 2024, the Larut Matang and Selama District NRD received 69,740 applications, compared to 41,804 in the previous year. "This 40 per cent increase demonstrates that the NRD's initiative to improve facilities for public comfort is a timely and appropriate step in delivering efficient and effective services," he said. He added that as the leading agency in managing the nation's population records, the NRD plays a crucial role as the primary reference agency for identity record management through digital transformation. "The NRD has implemented digitalisation initiatives such as Artificial Intelligence (AI) and MyDigital ID, modernising services that originally began with manual registration of personal documents into a digital system that streamlines customer interactions and shortens processing times," he said.

Perlis assembly building renamed as Kompleks Seri Putra

KANGAR: The Perlis state assembly complex here has been renamed as Kompleks Seri Putra, officially announced by the Raja of Perlis, Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin Jamalullail. In his speech, His Royal Highness said he was pleased to announce the new name of the complex, which took the name of his father, the late Tuanku Syed Putra. "My late father was the first Raja of Perlis on the throne since the Perlis Constitution was drafted on Feb 1, 1948, coinciding with the birth of the Federation of Malaya. "Until now, the Perlis Constitution, which was completed on March 26, 1959, is still in use as a result of the wisdom and legacy of His late Highness' rule. "Under His late Highness' reign, the Perlis State Assembly was formed and the State Legislative Council Election was held on Sept 24, 1955, with nine seats. It is fitting that His late Highness' services are remembered and honoured," said Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin at a tea ceremony with the people in conjunction with his 82nd birthday celebration at the complex on Monday (May 19). The text of Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin's speech was read by the Raja Muda of Perlis, Tuanku Syed Faizuddin Putra Jamalullail. Also present at the ceremony were the Raja Perempuan of Perlis Tuanku Tengku Fauziah Almarhum Tengku Abdul Rashid and the Raja Puan Muda of Perlis Tuanku Dr Hajah Lailatul Shahreen Akashah Khalil. Also present was Perlis Mentri Besar Mohd Shukri Ramli. The Raja of Perlis said that the large and beautiful building has become a landmark, which replaced the Big Clock Building to hold the Perlis State Assembly session since June 24, 2008, before His Royal Highness officiated the building as the state assembly complex on May 25, 2010. "Since the First Session of the 12th State Assembly, 50 sessions have been held in this building. The most recent was from April 22 to 24, 2025. "Utilise this building as a place to negotiate, discuss with prudence and wisdom and enact fair legislation for the well-being of the people of this state. This large building must be fully utilised and well-maintained. "Find solutions and common ground to govern and develop this state on par with other states. Use this opportunity given by Allah to provide service to the people of this state," said His Royal Highness. – Bernama
