Tottenham Hotspur season preview: Defensive solidity to come first as injuries strike again
Tottenham Hotspur won their first silverware in 17 years less than three months ago, but there is a growing sense of trepidation around the new season, which kicks off at home against promoted Burnley on Saturday. Thomas Frank has replaced Ange Postecoglou in the dugout, the club sacking their head coach two weeks after he led them to that Europa League final triumph, and the long-time Brentford boss has placed an emphasis on defensive solidity throughout pre-season. Advertisement A failed pursuit of Nottingham Forest playmaker Morgan Gibbs-White and the long-term knee injuries suffered by James Maddison and Dejan Kulusevski have left Tottenham desperately short of creativity in midfield. If they address this issue before the transfer window closes on September 1, their fans should feel reasonably optimistic about what can be achieved between now and next May. Juggling the Premier League and a minimum of eight midweek Champions League matches will be a challenge for a young squad, but Spurs will hope to have learned from their struggles of last season… In Frank's opinion, the last time Tottenham were genuinely competitive in multiple competitions was in the 2018-19 season, when they reached the Champions League final, finished fourth in the Premier League and got to the Carabao Cup semi-finals under Mauricio Pochettino. The Dane is determined to correct that after signing a three-year contract to move across London, from west to north, in June. It should not be too difficult for Frank to improve on last season's 17th-place finish, but his bullish words suggest he is aiming for the top six, which will be tricky. Spurs massively underperformed last season compared to their perceived direct rivals, and the gap to the domestic elite has probably only grown over the summer. Liverpool, Chelsea, Arsenal and both Manchester clubs have all spent significantly in this transfer window. In contrast, Mohammed Kudus and Joao Palhinha are the only players through the door so far who immediately improve Tottenham's starting XI. The squad still lacks quality cover in certain areas, including in attack. Kevin Danso and Mathys Tel joined permanently after spending the second half of last season on loan with Spurs. Kota Takai, a 20-year-old defender, arrived from J1-League side Kawasaki Frontale but has not featured in pre-season due to a foot issue. Defensive midfielder Palhinha is on a season-long loan from Bayern Munich that includes an option to buy, and he addresses an area of the squad which had been overlooked for a couple of years. Advertisement The headline signing so far is Kudus for around £55million from West Ham United. The Ghana international scored eight goals and provided six assists in 33 Premier League appearances in 2023-24, his first year with West Ham after leaving Ajax of the Netherlands. West Ham struggled collectively last season and Kudus' productivity declined to only eight direct goal involvements in his 32 league games. The 25-year-old's direct dribbling style makes him an unpredictable wildcard though, and he should add an exciting dimension to Spurs' attack. At the beginning of July, Spurs thought they were going to land Kudus and Gibbs-White on the same day. It would have been a huge statement of intent to snatch two highly talented and Premier League-proven players. However, Forest reported Spurs to the Premier League for an illegal approach and the transfer collapsed. Gibbs-White ended up signing a new contract until 2028. It was a crushing blow at the time and now feels like a disaster, following the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) knee injury Maddison suffered in a subsequent pre-season friendly. Spurs are starting their 2025-26 campaign without a recognised No 10, though they are interested in Italian side Como's attacking midfielder Nico Paz, 20, and 21-year-old Manchester City winger Savinho. Following the loss of Maddison for much of the season at best and Son Heung-min's departure last week to MLS side LAFC, it feels like the squad is weaker now than it was in May. Frank's appointment is the most significant change, but Spurs have a new chief executive officer in Vinai Venkatesham. He spent 14 years working for their arch-rivals Arsenal across a variety of different roles, including CEO. Venkatesham has spent the bulk of his time this summer working on transfers and filling out Frank's backroom staff. Matt Wells is the only surviving member of Postecoglou's coaching team. Advertisement Tottenham have hired Andreas Georgson, previously with Arsenal and Manchester United, as a set-piece specialist and Cameron Campbell has been appointed to the newly-created role of an individual-development (IDP) coach. They are also putting together a new-look medical department following the departures of director of performance services Adam Brett and head of sports science Nick Davies. It is a dizzying amount of change off the pitch in one off-season, and Frank will be hoping it does not lead to much disruption on it. Pape Matar Sarr has made a big impression on Frank operating in a more advanced central midfield role. The Senegal international makes surging runs with the ball and snaps into tackles. Archie Gray, the teenager who primarily played in defence last season following a summer move from Leeds United due to the club's injury crisis, looked excellent in midfield in the 1-1 draw with Newcastle United — not to mention in the UEFA Super Cup against Paris Saint-Germain. Frank has praised Djed Spence, Rodrigo Bentancur and Wilson Odobert for their performances too. Spurs won the Europa League final in May, and in doing so threw all the endless jokes and memes about their lack of silverware in the bin. That memorable night in Bilbao should be a springboard for more success. They are back in the Champions League as a result of that triumph and need to kick on and ensure they qualify for UEFA's premier club competition every season. Postecoglou will always be fondly remembered for delivering European glory but during his second (and last) year in charge, nobody of a Tottenham persuasion seemed able to agree on whether they believed in his philosophy or not. Frank will aim to bottle the euphoria that finally lifting a trophy again generated and keep everyone united. Kulusevski and Maddison are both lost to serious knee injuries, so how will Spurs create chances without their two most creative players? Apart from the 4-0 defeat to Bayern in Germany last Thursday, they were solid under Frank in pre-season — though pretty toothless going forward. Tottenham possess a lot of young talent, including Tel, Odobert, Gray and Lucas Bergvall, but the fear is that the goalscoring burden will fall entirely on the shoulders of Dominic Solanke and Brennan Johnson again. Advertisement Earlier this summer, chairman Daniel Levy did a joint interview with Venkatesham where they outlined ambitions to win the Premier League in the near future. Spurs' limited activity in the current transfer window so far will not have convinced many of the club's supporters they are any closer to achieving that goal. Frank spent nearly seven years in charge at Brentford and his main task during their four seasons in the top flight was avoiding relegation. Now with Spurs, he is excited about working with better quality players every day, managing in front of huge, sell-out home crowds every other week and finally getting a crack at the Champions League. Levy has spoken positively about the Dane's qualities. He has a track record of developing talent, is tactically flexible and has known sporting director Johan Lange for over 20 years since they worked together at second-division side B.93 in their homeland. Surely something disastrous would have to happen for Frank to get sacked in his first season. Do not forget, though, that Nuno Espirito Santo was gone after less than four months and only 17 games in charge after succeeding Jose Mourinho for the 2021-22 season… Tottenham end up drawing a lot of games or winning by tight margins, prompting sections of the fanbase to grow restless about the lack of entertainment. There were some ugly performances last season, including the 6-3 defeat at home to eventual champions Liverpool in December, but they also produced some thrilling results, including the 4-0 away win against defending champions Manchester City a month earlier. Frank's focus on improving the defence could see Spurs lose a little of the attacking flair they had. There are still a few question marks here, but if we work on the assumption the back three we saw against PSG will only be rolled out for special occasions, and factor out the long-term injured, Spurs could look a little like this… Spot the pattern. Housebuilder becomes main sponsor for Cleckheaton tennis club
A housebuilder has served up a sponsorship deal with Cleckheaton Lawn Tennis Club. Barratt Homes, currently building its Wadsworth Gardens development on Whitechapel Road, will be the club's main sponsor for the next 12 months. Martyn Addison, secretary at Cleckheaton Lawn Tennis Club, said: "We are delighted that Barratt Homes is supporting us. Cleckheaton Tennis Club's members enjoying a social evening (Image: Supplied) "We are a community club run by volunteers so this partnership really helps to keep the facilities in tip top condition for our members and the local community to enjoy." The sponsorship was arranged during Wimbledon in July, one of the sport's most high-profile events. Fancy Cats show set to bring Ocicats, Ragdolls and more to Greenwich
London is set to go cat crazy this summer when one of the UK's most dazzling feline events arrives in the capital. The Fancy Cats London SpeCATular will transform the University of Greenwich's Avery Hill campus into a paradise for cat lovers on August 30 and 31. The event promises a celebration of all things feline, with pedigree breeds and household cats competing for titles, prizes, and the coveted Best in Show. The show will also highlight the work of cat rescue organisations. At a previous event, Kool Cat Rescue found homes for four kittens after visitors met them at the show.
