Is BYD the Smartest Investment You Can Make Today?

Key Points
BYD's stock has more than quadrupled since 2020.
Its deliveries accelerated, its margins expanded, and its profits soared.
It still looks reasonably valued relative to its growth potential.
10 stocks we like better than BYD Company ›
BYD (OTC: BYDDY), China's largest automaker, has seen its stock surge nearly 330% over the past five years. That rally was driven by its explosive sales growth, market share gains, overseas expansion, and technological advancements. It also outperformed many other domestic and international automakers even as the pandemic, inflation, geopolitical conflicts, tariffs, and other macro headwinds rattled the industry.
So is BYD still one of the smartest investments you can make today? Let's review its growth rates, future catalysts and challenges, and valuations to decide.
A brief history of BYD
BYD started out as a battery manufacturing company 30 years ago. It launched its own automotive subsidiary in 2003, and it started selling its first gas-powered vehicles in 2005. It launched its first battery-powered electric vehicle, the BYD e6, in 2009. In 2008, Berkshire Hathaway's (NYSE: BRK.A) (NYSE: BRK.B) MidAmerican Energy acquired a stake in BYD. Berkshire still holds a 4.4% stake in BYD today, making it one of the few Chinese stocks approved by Warren Buffett.
BYD's auto sales stagnated from 2009 to 2020 as its annual shipments stayed at around half a million vehicles. That sluggish growth was caused by tougher competition, quality control issues, and its focus on gas-powered vehicles instead of its new energy vehicles (NEVs). The Chinese government also reined in its subsidies for the NEV market.
But from 2020 to 2024, BYD's annual vehicle sales skyrocketed tenfold from 427,302 to 4,272,145 cars, its revenue rose more than fivefold, and its net income surged nearly tenfold. By comparison, its smaller rival Nio (NYSE: NIO) only delivered 221,970 EVs in 2024.
Why did BYD grow so quickly?
During those four years, BYD sold more EVs powered by its own lithium iron phosphate (LFP) "Blade" batteries -- which were safer, cheaper, and more power-efficient than traditional lithium ion batteries. It also revamped its vehicle designs, expanded its manufacturing plants, aggressively slashed its prices to gain more domestic customers, and expanded overseas across Southeast Asia, Europe, and Latin America.
As BYD scaled up its business, it vertically integrated its own supply chain (by manufacturing its own batteries, motors, chips, and power electronics) to reduce its production costs. It also unified its production lines with its e-Platform 3.0 architecture, which allowed multiple types of vehicles to be built with the same components, and sold a higher mix of its higher-margin plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEVs). All of those improvements -- along with its soaring revenues and economies of scale which diluted its production costs per vehicle -- partly offset the pressure from its margin-crushing markdowns.
What will happen over the next few years?
BYD expects its near-term growth to be driven by its rising overseas sales, the expansion of its own fast charging network across China, the rollout of its higher-end AI and driver assistance features in its mid-range models, and its increased production capacity.
BYD had already eclipsed Tesla (NASDAQ: TSLA), which delivered 1.79 million vehicles in 2024, as the world's largest EV maker. But looking ahead, JPMorgan (NYSE: JPM) expects its annual vehicle sales to rise 29% to 5.5 million units in 2025 and 18% to 6.5 million units in 2026.
From 2024 to 2027, analysts expect its revenue and net income to grow at a CAGR of 19% and 25%, respectively. Those are robust growth rates for a stock that trades at less than 1 times this year's sales and 17 times this year's earnings.
BYD's valuations are likely being compressed by three pressing concerns: its dependence on China, which still faces unpredictable tariffs and messy macro headwinds; competition across the country's fragmented EV market; and the impact of its overseas expansion, price cuts, and other capital-intensive projects on its long-term margins.
So is it the smartest investment you can make today?
BYD still has a brighter future than many of China's other EV makers, and it should keep growing over the next decade. But it also probably won't command a higher valuation until the Chinese EV market stabilizes or the U.S. and China strike a favorable trade deal.
So while BYD might outshine a lot of other EV makers and seem like a decent stock to accumulate right now, I'd hesitate to call it the "smartest" investment you can make today. It offers a good combination of value and growth, but it's neither the best value nor growth play for this volatile market.

‘Joyride Might Be Over,' Says Top Investor About Nvidia Stock

Nvidia (NASDAQ:NVDA) stock has built a reputation for consistently shattering quarterly earnings projections – a fact seasoned investors know all too well. But that winning streak can be a double-edged sword, as even a solid beat doesn't always translate into immediate post-earnings gains. Elevate Your Investing Strategy: Take advantage of TipRanks Premium at 50% off! Unlock powerful investing tools, advanced data, and expert analyst insights to help you invest with confidence. That dynamic makes Nvidia's upcoming fiscal Q2 2026 earnings on August 27 especially intriguing. Momentum is already firmly in the bulls' corner, with NVDA shares up 91% since hitting a trough in early April. Expectations remain strong, though not at the triple-digit pace NVDA has delivered in its best quarters. The average analyst estimate of $45.75 billion points to year-over-year growth of 52.31%, with margins expected to hold at an impressive 72%. On paper, such results could still tempt investors to add shares ahead of the report – even if history suggests a short-term lull is possible afterward. But not everyone is convinced. One top investor, known as Oakoff Investments, is taking a far more cautious stance. 'I don't like the setup formed in NVDA's price action as it approaches the Q2 earnings release date,' warns the 5-star investor, who is among the top 4% of TipRanks' stock pros. Oakoff's caution stems largely from concerns about Nvidia's sales to China. While previous U.S. restrictions appear to have been lifted, there are signs the Chinese government may impose its own limits. That also possibility raises the stakes for Nvidia to deliver outsized growth in other regions to sustain investor enthusiasm – a task Oakoff believes is becoming increasingly difficult. 'If the market gets a slight hint towards further deterioration on this front, the stock may sell off badly even if NVDA beats the headline numbers as strongly as it did during the past 2 years,' Oakoff opined. Valuation is another sticking point. After months of gains, Oakoff argues the rally has been fueled by multiple expansion, pushing NVDA's Forward P/E ratio to an 'unsustainable' 42.5x. The result, according to Oakoff, is a setup vulnerable to disappointment. Given these risks, the investor is leaning toward profit-taking before the earnings call. 'I maintain a Hold rating, believing NVDA stock's high valuation and the new China uncertainty outweigh the likelihood of a strong Q2 beat,' Oakoff says. (To watch Oakoff Investments' track record, click here) Wall Street, in contrast, remains almost 'all in' on NVDA. With 35 Buys, 3 Holds, and a solitary Sell rating, the stock enjoys a Strong Buy consensus rating. UnitedHealth Group shares climb as Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway discloses stake in the insurer

Shares of UnitedHealth Group are surging before the market open Friday as Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway disclosed that it recently purchased shares of the beleaguered insurer. Berkshire Hathaway bought around 5 million shares of UnitedHealth last quarter, according to a regulatory filing. The stake was valued at about $1.57 billion. Buffett plans to retire as CEO at the end of the year after six decades of building Berkshire Hathaway. Many investors comb through Berkshire's filings every quarter because they like to follow Buffett's moves. The filing doesn't make clear who at Berkshire handled the investment. Besides Buffett, Ted Weschler and Todd Combs also pick stocks, but they generally handle smaller portfolios and Combs also serves as Geico's CEO. Besides stocks, Berkshire owns dozens of companies in a variety of industries including Geico insurance, BNSF railroad, several major utilities and an assortment of manufacturing and retail companies. The Omaha, Nebraska-based company's holdings include many well-known brands like See's Candy and Dairy Queen. UnitedHealth has been dealing with a series of difficulties. Last month the company said that it was cooperating with federal criminal and civil investigations involving its market-leading Medicare business. The health care giant said at the time that it had contacted the Department of Justice after reviewing media reports about investigations into certain elements of its business. Earlier this year, The Wall Street Journal said federal officials had launched a civil fraud investigation into how the company records diagnoses that lead to extra payments for its Medicare Advantage, or MA, plans. Those are privately run versions of the government's Medicare coverage program mostly for people ages 65 and over. The company's UnitedHealthcare business covers more than 8 million people as the nation's largest provider of Medicare Advantage plans. The business has been under pressure in recent quarters due to rising care use and rate cuts. The Journal said in February, citing anonymous sources, that the probe focused on billing practices in recent months. The paper has since said that a federal criminal health care-fraud unit was investigating how the company used doctors and nurses to gather diagnoses that bolster payments. UnitedHealth Group Inc. runs one of the nation's largest health insurance and pharmacy benefits management businesses. It also operates a growing Optum business that provides care and technology support. UnitedHealth's stock has mostly shed value since December, when UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson was fatally shot in midtown Manhattan on his way to the company's annual investor meeting. A suspect, Luigi Mangione, has been charged in connection with the shooting. In April, shares plunged some more after the company cut its forecast due to a spike in health care use. A month later, former CEO Andrew Witty resigned, and the company withdrew its forecast entirely, saying that medical costs from new Medicare Advantage members were higher than expected. UnitedHealth's stock jumped more than 12% in premarket trading on Friday. Still, the stock has lost roughly half its value in the past year. Chapman writes for the Associated Press.
