Teen in clown mask goes on robbery spree, then parent turns him in, IN cops say
The teen went on a two-night crime spree in an Evansville neighborhood, where he broke into two vehicles on June 19 and tried to rob more vehicles and a home on June 22, the Vanderburgh County Sheriff's Office said in a June 24 news release.
'This is just youthful immaturity,' Sheriff Noah Robinson told WEHT. 'Wearing a mask like that ramped up social media attention and led to this person's parents seeing it posted online.'
Police did not identify the teen suspect.
Two residents said cash, a laptop and designer handbags were taken from their vehicles as home surveillance footage captured the masked teen, according to deputies.
Three days later, the teen was seen on home surveillance footage as he tried to open several locked vehicles and a locked garage, according to the sheriff's office. Another person said two window screens were removed from their home, which police believe was an attempt at burglary.
The teen did not get into the home, garage or vehicles on June 22, deputies said.
A parent recognized their child in the surveillance video posted to social media by the sheriff's office in the hopes of identifying the suspect. They brought their child to the sheriff's office, where the teen confessed, deputies said.
'We are grateful to the parent who demonstrated courage and integrity by doing the right thing, even under difficult circumstances,' Robinson said in a statement. 'Their decision to bring their child forward not only aided our investigation, but also gave this young person an opportunity to face consequences and access the resources available through Juvenile Court.'
Multiple stolen items were found at the teen's home, according to deputies.
The teen is currently in the Youth Care Center and is held pending proceedings in juvenile court, deputies said. He was charged with two counts of attempted burglary, theft as a felony and two counts of theft as a misdemeanor.
Evansville is about a 175-mile drive southwest from Indianapolis.

Japanese star convicted of indecent assault in Hong Kong
A Hong Kong court on Wednesday found J-pop artist Kenshin Kamimura guilty of indecent assault after he harassed a woman working as his interpreter at a restaurant earlier this year. Kamimura, 26, is a former member of the boy band ONE N'ONLY, which expelled him shortly after the allegation. Fans queued to get into court for hours before the hearing, and some broke down in tears upon learning Kamimura had been convicted. The court heard Kamimura touched the woman's thighs multiple times despite her objections, and invited her to go to the bathroom with him. Magistrate Peter Yu found he had assaulted her, adding his behaviour "clearly shows disrespect for women". The incident took place in March during a celebratory dinner, after a fan meet for which the woman had been working as an interpreter for Kamimura and others. The Japanese star was fined HK$15,000 ($1,900). Kamimura, who is also known as an actor in the Japanese drama "Our Youth", hugged his court translator upon hearing he would be fined without facing jail time, media reports said. Kamimura got "what he deserved", Yu said, adding that "had the victim not refused to remain silent and courageously come forward, she would have suffered an unpleasant experience in silence". But ardent fans inside and outside the court were in tears. Chan, a 30-year-old screenwriter and fan who gave only her last name, said she had come from northern China to watch the court session. She told AFP before the verdict that the trial has had a negative impact on Kamimura's image, and had incited "public outbursts of vitriol against the artist". twa/reb/rsc

Man in court over murder of Stephen Brannigan and attack on priest in church
A man has appeared in court charged with the murder of Stephen Brannigan and the attempted murder of a priest in Co Down. Hugh Malone, 30, of no fixed address but from the Belfast area, appeared via videolink from Musgrave police station at Newtownards Magistrates' Court on Wednesday. The body of Mr Brannigan, 56, was found in a house in Marian Park in Downpatrick on Sunday afternoon. On the same day, Father John Murray was attacked at St Patrick's Church in the town. No details of the incident were given during the brief court hearing. Malone was wearing a grey sweatshirt and confirmed that he understood the charges against him. A Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) detective chief inspector told the court that she could connect Malone to the charges. A defence solicitor asked the officer to confirm that his client had had an appropriate adult or intermediary with him during police interviews. The lawyer said there was a 'significant mental health context' to the case. No application for bail was made and deputy district judge Peter Prenter remanded Malone in custody until September 4. Fr John Murray is recovering in hospital after being attacked while preparing to celebrate his last mass before retirement at St Patrick's Church in Downpatrick on Sunday. A church service in support of the family of Mr Brannigan and for Fr Murray was held in the town on Tuesday. Mr Brannigan's family have described him as a 'beloved' father and grandfather.
