Metro In Dino Was Meant For Irrfan Khan & Konkona Sen, Says Anurag Basu

Anurag Basu reveals Irrfan Khan and Konkona Sen Sharma were always his first choice for the Life in a... Metro sequel, calling their story timeless.
Anurag Basu has won hearts with his recently released film Metro… In Dino, a spiritual sequel to Irrfan Khan starrer Life in a… Metro. While it took Anurag almost two decades to return to the franchise, what stayed with him was the memory of Irrfan Khan.
In an exclusive chat with News18, Anurag discussed his musical romantic drama in detail and revealed why Konkona Sen Sharma was the only returning cast member while the rest of the ensemble was fresh.
'Vo, kya hai… Sabse pehle jab maine likhna shuru kiya tha, toh 3–4 saal pehle ek baar likh ke maine usko side mein rakh diya tha. When I was writing that film, Konkona aur Irrfan ki story main aage le ke jaa raha tha — from the earlier Metro. Phir uske baad maine Metro banayi nahi, main dusri filmon mein busy ho gaya. Jab wapas visit kiya toh yeh hi kahani meri likhi hui thi. Konkona ki casting mere dimaag mein pehle se thi, toh naturally… I called her," Anurag shared.
While most filmmakers cast actors first, Basu agreed when we asked if he had cast the singers first for Metro… In Dino. After laughing it off, he admitted that Pritam was always on his mind and said, 'Konkona and Pritam were the first final casting for this film."
Anurag Basu has long treated music not just as a background element but as a character in itself. His musicals have a distinct soul. When asked if he believes India is ready for musicals, he said, 'Yes, absolutely. If you look back at the old films, where our cinema began, this is our history. We had lost our way somewhere in the middle."
But does that deep connection to music leave him anxious about the outcome? Not quite. 'If you overthink so much, it becomes difficult to make a film with honesty. Then it turns into — will this work or not, let's do this instead, let's add that — that's dishonesty towards the film, isn't it? Just make it with honesty and give it your best. If you're making a film just to please everyone, then it's better to make rajma chawal instead — why make a film at all?" he concluded.
On the work front, Anurag Basu is enjoying rave reviews for Metro… In Dino, which features an ensemble cast including Neena Gupta, Anupam Kher, Saswata Chatterjee, Fatima Sana Shaikh, Ali Fazal, Konkona Sen Sharma, Pankaj Tripathi, Aditya Roy Kapur, and Sara Ali Khan. Up next, he is working on a musical drama starring Kartik Aaryan and Sreeleela in the lead roles.

Metro In Dino Box Office Day 1: Anurag Basu Film Opens At Rs 3 Cr, Beats Life In A Metro By 300%

Last Updated: As per early estimates by Sacnilk, Metro In Dino first-day collection marks a 300% improvement over Basu's 2007 sleeper hit Life In A Metro. Metro In Dino Box Office Collection Day 1: Anurag Basu's much-anticipated romantic drama Metro In Dino opened in theatres to a decent start, earning Rs 3.04 crore on Day 1 at the box office. As per early estimates by Sacnilk, the ensemble film's first-day collection marks a 300% improvement over Basu's 2007 sleeper hit Life In A Metro, which had opened at just Rs 80 lakh. While Rs 3 crore may appear modest compared to blockbuster debuts, it's a solid opening for a romantic drama in today's theatrical landscape. The genre rarely sees high first-day numbers in India. The performance is particularly encouraging given the film's scale and its strong ensemble cast featuring Sara Ali Khan, Aditya Roy Kapur, Neena Gupta, Anupam Kher, Konkona Sen Sharma, Pankaj Tripathi, and Ali Fazal. The film is a spiritual successor to Life In A Metro and explores modern relationships across different cities through four interconnected love stories. Anurag Basu's signature storytelling style, combined with Pritam's soul-stirring music, has already received widespread acclaim. Konkona is the only actor from the original cast to return in this film. Metro In Dino has been praised for its nuanced take on love and commitment. An excerpt from News18's review states, 'It's not every day that we get to see a Bollywood love story written with so much heart, maturity, intensity, intimacy and subtlety. Metro In Dino is a masterclass on modern-day love. It's for the lonely, for the ones who won in love and then lost some. It's as much Anurag's film as Pritam's. Zamaana Lage, Dil Ka Kya, and Mann Ye Mera stand out particularly. Rush to the cinemas now!" The film's Day 1 success suggests it could enjoy positive word of mouth, similar to Life In A Metro, which went on to earn over Rs 24 crore domestically despite its slow start. ‘Metro... In Dino' Box Office Collection Day 1: Anurag Basu's romantic drama opens to a modest theatrical response

Anurag Basu's long-awaited ensemble drama 'Metro... In Dino' opened in Indian cinemas on July 4, 2025, earning an estimated ₹ 3.35 crore on its first day, according to early trade figures. The film, positioned as a spiritual successor to 2007's 'Life in a... Metro', had generated moderate pre-release interest, primarily due to its star-studded cast and the nostalgia associated with Basu's original. Despite the director's reputation and a seasoned ensemble including Anupam Kher, Neena Gupta, Pankaj Tripathi, Konkona Sen Sharma, Aditya Roy Kapur, and Sara Ali Khan, the first-day response appears to have been tepid overall, particularly in terms of occupancy rates. Nationally, the Day 1 Hindi (2D) occupancy averaged around 12.72%, with a slight uptick in the evening shows (17.99%) compared to the morning (8.64%) and afternoon (14.24%) slots. Notably, there were no recorded numbers for night shows, either due to data unavailability or cancellations. Regionally, the turnout was varied. Chennai led the charts with a high 41% occupancy, followed by Bengaluru at 28.33% and Kolkata at 18.33%. The Mumbai and NCR regions—typically dependable urban markets—saw modest showings at 14.33% and 15% respectively. In contrast, cities like Surat (4%) and Ahmedabad (7%) recorded weak footfalls. 'Metro... In Dino' weaves together multiple narratives of modern love and relationships, echoing the structure of its 2007 predecessor but rooted in contemporary urban settings. Shot across major cities including Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata and Lucknow, the film explores themes of emotional distance, second chances, and the quiet complexities of everyday romance. Produced by T-Series and Anurag Basu Productions, the film blends musical storytelling with ensemble drama—a format that worked well in Life in a... Metro but now faces a more segmented and streaming-oriented audience. Whether word-of-mouth can drive weekend numbers remains to be seen, but as it stands, 'Metro... In Dino' has had a modest start at the box office.
