AbilityFEST2025 draws to an emotional close with Sitaare Zameen Par

The Hindu11-07-2025
The air buzzed with anticipation, eyes on the entrance, waiting for the stars to arrive. But these are not your typical red carpet regulars – they were the young athletes from Sitare Zameen Par, the breakout hit that's taken the country by storm. Backed by Aamir Khan Productions, the film about neurodivergent children discovering their strength through sport (basketball here) has garnered a lot of love and affection from the audience and critics alike. The film is known to have opened up vital conversations about inclusion and ability, where the young cast now shines as a beacon of resilience and a new kind of heroism.
Screened at PVR-INOX Sathyam Cinemas recently, Sitare Zameen Par was the final screening for AbilityFEST2025, presented by Ability Foundation. Present at the screening were the director, RS Prasanna, writer Divy Nidhi Sharma, and co-producer Aparna Purohit.
In conversation with the festival chairperson, Revathy, Prasanna spoke about how this film was 'more than a movie,' that it 'goes beyond the constructs of a movie and goes to the heart'. The most poignant moment was when he asked the parents of the stars to stand up, addressing them as the 'real stars.' He spoke about how, because of them, the cast were already primed with talent, and the filmmakers merely 'did our bit, you know, like coaches do.'
Adapted from a Spanish movie called Campeones, writer Divy Nidhi spoke of how the team tried to keep the emotional core of the original film intact, but also Indianise it for the audience. 'We are often asked how it was to work with these actors, and I would like to put it on record that this is the most focussed, most disciplined bunch we have ever worked with,' he further added.
The event also saw the announcement of the winners of the '60 Seconds to Fame!' All-India one-minute film competition on disability. This year's theme, 'Through Your Lens: A Celebration of Disability Inclusion,' inspired a range of creative responses. The 17 shortlisted films were screened throughout the four-day festival from July 7 to 10. The best film was handed to The Menu by filmmaker Nikita Konari, which showed how braille menus can be introduced to make eateries more accessible.

Marià Gabarro didn't like real dogs but collected 5,025 dog figurines - Sets Guinness World Record

Marià Gabarro, a Spanish collector from Terrassa near Barcelona, may not have liked real dogs, but that didn't stop him from creating the world's largest collection of dog figurines. His impressive collection of 5,025 dog-themed items – including figurines, cuddly toys, and even walking sticks with dog-head handles – has earned him a spot in the Guinness World Records, as reported in Reuters. A Hobby That Started in His 60s Gabarro, who worked as a sales manager, began collecting dog figurines in his 60s. Despite not being fond of actual dogs, he developed a deep interest in collecting miniature representations of them. Over the years, he visited markets, fairs, and antique shops across Spain to find unique pieces for his collection. A Tribute After His Passing Marià Gabarro passed away last year at the age of 94. Following his death, his family decided to honour his passion by applying for a Guinness World Record. His children counted all the items meticulously, and to their delight, Gabarro's collection was officially recognised as the largest of its kind. The Dog Figurine Collection Now Lives On The collection was stored across two of his homes in Terrassa. His daughter, Teresa Gabarro, 54, shared that while her father wasn't keen on live dogs, he adored the inanimate versions. She even lets her own West Highland White Terrier play with the soft toys from the collection, blending both worlds together. (My parents) really liked the non-real dogs, but not the live ones.' Teresa Gabarro told Reuters. An Unusual Passion Recognised Worldwide Gabarro's name will now forever be remembered in the Guinness World Records, thanks to his unusual but fascinating passion for dog figurines. His story reminds us that sometimes the quirkiest hobbies can become record-breaking legacies. Video: Spanish EF-18 Hornet Jet Nearly Crashes Into Crowd During Airshow

Madrid: A Spanish Air Force EF-18 Hornet fighter jet had a close call after it appeared to lose control and crash during an airshow at a crowded beach in Gijon over the weekend. The incident occurred on Sunday at San Lorenzo Bay in northern Spain's Asturias. Videos of the near crash have gone viral on social media, showing Hornet flying at very low altitude towards the beach packed with spectators, when it executed a hard right roll. The sudden manoeuvre made the jet descend lower than normal, making it seem like the jet was losing control mid-air. But the plane soon recovered stability and climbed up. The terrifying footage shows puffs of black smoke rising from the plane, shocking the audience, many of whom had their cameras rolling. A bird strike while the Hornet was flying at such a low angle toward a crowd could have resulted in a big disaster, and the pilot's timely actions saved many lives. Muchos nos habéis estado preguntando, por eso, en este hilo, os contamos qué pasó durante el festival aéreo de Gijón. Hilo 🧵 — Ejército del Aire y del Espacio (@EjercitoAire) July 28, 2025 "Many of you have been asking us, so in this thread, we'll tell you what happened during the Gijon air festival. As you have seen, one of our F-18 fighters performed an evasive manoeuvre upon detecting a flock of birds in its path. This action is part of the standard protocol to preserve both the pilot's safety and the public's security," the post in Spanish said. "Our aviators are trained to react in milliseconds to any unforeseen event. In this case, the pilot acted with exemplary speed and professionalism, avoiding a possible collision without compromising the exhibition. Safety is, and will continue to be, our top priority at every air show. Thank you to all attendees for your enthusiasm and trust. Let's keep flying together," it added. In a similar incident last month, the canopy of a Spanish EF2000 shattered after it took a bird strike during its airshow routine.
