KL Rahul smashes century in first match after landing in England, all but cements position as opener for 1st India Test

KL Rahul announces his arrival in England with a style by hitting a sublime century against England Lions in the 2nd unofficial Test. Rahul, who is raring to prove himself once again, all but put a stamp on his place as an opener for the upcoming Test series with a 151-ball century for India A on Day 1 after the Tea break. The star batter joined India A after the first match and straightaway made an impact with a fine knock.
Rahul once again showed maturity with the bat when India lost two early wickets - Yashasvi Jaiswal (17) and Abhimanyu Easwaran (11), who returned to the pavilion early. Rahul stabilised the innings alongside his fellow IPL teammate Karun Nair as the duo shared an 86-run stand for the third wicket. Nair, who scored a brilliant double century in the first unofficial Test, was dismissed on 40 off 71 balls.
The 33-year-old continued to hold one end and kept going to put India in a solid position with a fine century, which was embellished with 13 fours and 1 six. He put the foot on the accelerator after scoring fifty and reached century at a rapid pace to make a statement.
Rahul faces a tough task of stepping into Rohit Sharma's shoes at the top, but the assurance of a settled batting position in the line-up could do wonders for his confidence. In India's last Test series, where they played Australia Down Under, Rahul started as an opener in the first Test and continued to bat there for the first three matches but was pushed down to number 3 for the Boxing Day Test. He was once again reinstated as opener in the final clash. Over the past couple of years, the 33-year-old had to adapt to a middle-order role in the absence of Rishabh Pant, who was sidelined from competitive cricket following a serious car accident.
Meanwhile, his knock on Friday would be a sigh of relief for head coach Gautam Gambhir and skipper Shubman Gill to solve the opening conundrum ahead of the Test series.
Earlier in the match, Chris Woakes marked his return from injury with an impressive new-ball spell, claiming both early wickets in the morning session of the first Test against India at Leeds.
Leading England's pace attack, Woakes struck by trapping Yashasvi Jaiswal LBW with a sharp in-seamer. He nearly dismissed Abhimanyu Easwaran off the very first ball, but a dropped catch in the slips gave the opener a brief lifeline. However, Woakes soon produced another brilliant delivery which nipped back in and hit the timber. In the second session, he claimed the crucial wicket of Nair by trapping him front of the wicket.

WATCH: Yashasvi Jaiswal sparks controversy after refusing to walk following umpire's decision in India A vs England Lions clash

Yashasvi Jaiswal stood his ground and refused to walk. New Delhi: India A opener Yashasvi Jaiswal expressed dissatisfaction after being dismissed for 17 runs in the second unofficial Test against England Lions. Umpire's decision to give him out leg before wicket (LBW) off a Chris Woakes delivery, despite Jaiswal's apparent amusement at the call, ended his innings early. During England Lions' match against India, Yashasvi Jaiswal was stumped in the seventh over. After winning the toss and electing to field, England's captain, James Rew, saw Jaiswal miss a full delivery, leading to his dismissal. Jaiswal initially disputed the umpire's decision before eventually leaving the field. The Barmy Army subsequently commented on the incident. Won't be the only time Woakes gets Jaiswal this — England's Barmy Army 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🎺 (@TheBarmyArmy) June 6, 2025 In the first unofficial Test match at Canterbury, Jaiswal scored 24 and 64 runs. His opening partnership with KL Rahul in the upcoming first Test at Headingley, Leeds (starting June 20th), is now confirmed after both players batted together in the second unofficial Test. Rahul, absent from the first match, joined the team after obtaining permission from the BCCI and demonstrated promising form with three boundaries. India's upcoming cricket series will begin with a practice match between the India A team and the senior national team. This match follows the current game and serves as preparation for the series opener. Jaiswal and Rahul will be key players for India in this series, as they are expected to fill the void left by the retired Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. The five-Test series presents a significant challenge for both players. During India's Australian tour, Yashasvi Jaiswal's performance stood out, achieving the highest individual run total of 391, including a top score of 161. This was one of only three centuries scored by Indian batsmen on the tour. In contrast, KL Rahul is a seasoned campaigner in England, embarking on his third tour. His previous tours yielded 299 runs in 2018 (including a high score of 149) and 315 runs in 2021 (including a century at Lord's). KL Rahul's performance in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy was mixed; while he scored 276 runs, a relatively modest total compared to his potential, he outperformed many of his teammates, achieving two half-centuries. His return to the opening position generates significant expectation that he will bolster India's batting against England's less experienced pace bowlers.

Yashasvi Jaiswal Refuses To Walk Back After Controversial LBW Call, Stares At Umpire

Yashasvi Jaiswal was dismissed LBW by Chris Woakes during India's second unofficial Test. Jaiswal was reluctant to leave the field after the umpire's decision on Day 1 of the match. India A scored 75 for two at lunch after a rain-affected first session against England Lions. Yashasvi Jaiswal refused to walk back after he was deemed LBW by the umpire on Day 1 of the second unofficial Test between India A and England Lions in Northampton. The incident happened on the penultimate ball of the seventh over after Chris Woakes ' inswinging delivery struck Jaiswal on the pads. The nipped back sharply after pitching, completely wrong-footing the India opener. The umpire raised his finger even though the ball seemed to be heading down the leg stump, having swung in sharply. Since it's an official game, Jaiswal was unable to challenge the call. He was visibly disappointed with the call and was hesitant to walk back to the dressing room. After staring at the umpire for a few seconds, Jaiswal eventually made the long walk to the dugout. Jaiswal lbw 17 to Woakes … not sure he necessarily agreed with the decision — Ali Martin (@Cricket_Ali) June 6, 2025 Meanwhile, India A reached 75 for two at lunch after a rain-marred first session on the opening day of the second unofficial Test against England Lions. KL Rahul and Karun Nair were batting on 26 and 16 respectively, when the lunch break was taken. Chris Woakes, who will lead the England pace attack in the first Test against India at Leeds from June 20, picked up the two wickets to fall in the first session. Returning to action after a long injury layoff, Woakes first had Yashasvi Jaiswal trapped in front of the wicket with a delivery that came into the left-hander sharply. Abhimanyu Easwaran was dropped in the second slip off the first delivery he faced. Woakes, however, cut short Easwaran's stay in the middle by getting him plumb infront with a delivery that straightened after pitching. The conditions at County Ground were overcast and aided the England Lions seamers. Nair could only face three deliveries before play was stopped due to bad weather. When play resumed after the rain break, Rahul and Nair played watchfully while keeping the scoreboard moving.. Earlier, England Lions captain James Rew had won the toss and opted to field. The visiting Indians are preparing to take on England in a five-match Test series beginning from June 20.

Michael Clarke picks IPL youngster for big role in India's Test vs England, snubs Karun Nair: ‘This kid is a superstar'

Former Australia skipper Michael Clarke feels that India should go with Sai Sudharsan at the number 3 position for the upcoming Test series against England. Virat Kohli's retirement has left India with a challenging void to fill at the No. 4 spot in the Test lineup, and newly appointed captain Shubman Gill has emerged as the frontrunner to take on that responsibility. With Gill expected to shift down to No. 4, India must now identify a reliable option to slot in at No. 3 — a position he had made his own over the past few years. Clarke advised India to use Sai Sudharsan at the crucial number 3 spot as he is confident that the left-handed batter will definitely get an opportunity on England tour. "To me, this kid is a superstar, Sai Sudharsan. I think he is a number three in Test cricket. I think he is probably going to open the batting in time in India's T20I and ODI team. He is in their Test squad. He gets his first opportunity in England. Sudharsan had a dream IPL season with bat, and as he won the Orange Cap for scoring 759 runs in 15 matches at an average of 54.21, with a strike rate of 156.17, a century and six fifties. The left-handed batter also walked away with the Emerging Player of the Year award, brushing off competition from Priyansh Arya, Noor Ahmad, and other youngsters. Clarke was thoroughly impressed with Sudharsan's IPL performances, highlighting his sound technique and ability to score heavily while taking minimal risks. "I think he can walk in straight to bat at number three. I think technically he's very good, he's got all the shots and mentally, he's ready. He really impressed me and he's a good looking player as well," Clarke said on the Beyond23 Cricket Podcast. However, another Indian batter has made a solid case to bat at the number 3 position - Karun Nair, who scored a brilliant double century in the India A's first game on England tour while batting at the same position. The likes of Gill and Sai Sudharsan were expected to play the second four-day game but their IPL commitments did not allow them. The duo would only get the intra-squad game to acclimatise before the first Test in Leeds.
