The Telangana Excise Department has ramped up its efforts to curb the sale and distribution of Non-Duty Paid Liquor (NDPL) and adulterated alcohol in Rangareddy division, with strict directives issued to enforcement teams to act decisively.
Excise Deputy Commissioner P. Dasarath, during a review meeting held on Monday, stressed the need for intensified inspections and swift resolution of pending cases. He directed officials to maintain heightened vigilance during Bonalu, where liquor consumption traditionally spikes, and ordered that NDPL and spurious liquor be strictly barred from reaching the public.
'There is a growing influx of liquor from Delhi and Haryana into Hyderabad and Rangareddy. Our teams must monitor this closely and take immediate action against illegal movement and usage, particularly at public gatherings and functions,' Deputy Commissioner Dasarath said.
Emphasising the importance of eliminating NDPL to meet State-mandated sales targets, the Deputy Commissioner instructed enforcement teams, station staff, and DTF units to intensify on-ground checks and coordinate with licenced vendors. He also called for greater stock preparedness by legal liquor traders in anticipation of increased demand during the festival period.
The Deputy Commissioner further directed excise stations to expedite legal proceedings, including charge sheet filings, arrest of absconding accused, disposal of seized vehicles, and the closure of long-pending cases.
Present at the review meeting were Assistant Commissioner R. Kishan, along with Excise Superintendents K. Vijay (Malkajgiri), NK Fayazuddin (Medchal), Ujwala Reddy (Saroornagar), and Vijaya Bhaskar Goud (Vikarabad), as well as Assistant Excise Superintendents, Circle Inspectors, and members from the Enforcement and DTF wings.

SC appreciates Tamil Nadu's use of preventive detention laws against cybercrime offenders

New Delhi, Jun 23 (UNI) The Supreme Court on Monday commended the State of Tamil Nadu for invoking preventive detention laws to tackle cybercrime, describing it as a "welcome trend" in combating growing digital frauds. A Bench comprising Justice Sandeep Mehta and Justice Joymalya Bagchi made the observation while hearing a petition challenging the preventive detention of one Abhijeet Singh, a cybercrime accused. Singh's detention under the Tamil Nadu Prevention of Dangerous Activities Act, 1982, had earlier been upheld by the Madras High Court. "This is a good trend coming from the State , that preventive detention laws are being used against cyber offenders. It's a very welcome approach. Normal criminal laws are not proving successful against these offenders," remarked Justice Mehta during the hearing. The petitioner, Singh's father, argued that the detention order was unconstitutional and violated Article 22(5) of the Constitution. He contended that the alleged cyber fraud was a one-off incident and did not disturb public order. He also claimed that the notice for the Advisory Board hearing was served too close to the hearing date, preventing the detenu from making an effective representation. Singh, a Punjab native residing in New Delhi, was arrested on July 25, 2024, following a complaint of a cyber fraud amounting to Rs 84.5 lakh lodged at the Cyber Crime Police Station in Theni district. The complainant, Bhanumathi, alleged that Rs 12.14 lakh was transferred into Singh's account operated under the entity name M/s Creative Craaft. Investigations revealed that Singh had floated four companies and opened multiple bank accounts in the names of his family members to route the fraudulent funds. The District Collector issued the detention order on August 23, 2024, which was subsequently confirmed by the Advisory Board on September 25, and by the State Government for a 12-month period on November 9, 2024. The petitioner's counsel argued that Singh had no prior criminal record and emphasised that preventive detention for the maximum period was unjustified. In response, Justice Mehta observed, 'That is the discretion of the State. The period of detention cannot be decided by the court in writ jurisdiction. "If there is no basis for detention, the order itself has to go, the period cannot be curtailed independently.' The Court took note of the counter affidavit filed by the State and directed the Registry to upload it on record. The matter is scheduled for further hearing on Wednesday, June 25, 2025. Earlier, the Madras High Court had dismissed the habeas corpus petition, holding that the detention order was backed by sufficient material, the procedures were duly followed, and there was no legal infirmity to warrant interference. Indian agents linked to Myanmar cyber crime den join stir with victims; trapped include youth from Hyderabad & Sri Lanka; seek Centre's help

HYDERABAD: In a first, Indian agents have joined hands with their victims trapped in the notorious cyber crime hub at KK Park compound in Myanmar's Myawaddy district to send out an SOS, requesting rescue. In an audio message to TOI, one of the victims from Telangana said: "On June 20, we staged a protest. Around 200 security men thrashed us. They took away phones of those who took videos and damaged them. Some people were put in dark rooms." "We are a group of 70-80 people and want to come out (of the compound). Apart from Indians, including some from Hyderabad, there are Sri Lankans too. We had already complained to the embassy and are awaiting response. Those who are working from Telangana are still luring people. They said it was data entry work, but once we entered the compound, we were forced into cyber crime," the victim added. Among those who joined the protest was Rajashaker Shyam Rao, a native of Telangana, who is facing criminal cases in India for his alleged involvement in cyber fraud recruitment. Earlier, the Karimnagar police had arrested one Hitesh Somaiah of Gujarat, who was accused of playing a key role in the Myanmar cyber fraud racket. He was apprehended and later produced before a court on a prisoner transit warrant in another case, Karimnagar police said. The case was first filed on Feb 23 based on a complaint filed by Kokkirala Lakshma Reddy, whose son Kokkirala Madhukar Reddy, is one of the victims who was subsequently rescued. Madhukar Reddy, 35, was sent illegally into KK2 Park compound where he and 100 other Indian youth were confined under armed watch. Inside the facility, they were coerced into cyber fraud operations targeting Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) in the US. Also, their passports were seized, making escape impossible. Those who resisted were subjected to electric shocks, beatings, and death threats.
