Kyle Manzardo's RBI single in 10th inning gives Guardians 3-2 win over Twins
CLEVELAND (AP) — Kyle Manzardo singled home Brayan Rocchio with one out in the 10th inning for his second walk-off hit of the season, giving the Cleveland Guardians a 3-2 victory over the Minnesota Twins on Friday night.
The Guardians loaded the bases against Kody Funderburk (1-1) on a single by Steven Kwan and an intentional walk to Jose Ramirez. Manzardo brought in automatic runner Rocchio with a liner to left field.
Cade Smith (3-4) pitched the final two innings as Cleveland improved to 9-5 since the All-Star break.
Ramírez drove in Kwan in the first inning, then stole second base to become the 17th player with 275 steals and 275 home runs in a career. He is the first primary third baseman to reach the milestone and the second switch hitter, joining Carlos Beltrán.
Rocchio brought home Carlos Santana in the second to give the Guardians a 2-0 lead against Joe Ryan, who worked six innings. Cleveland starter Gavin Williams struck out eight over six scoreless frames.
Minnesota tied the score at 2-all in the seventh on a throwing error by pitcher Hunter Gaddis, allowing Brooks Lee and Christian Vazquez to come around.
The Twins promoted four pitchers and four position players from Triple-A St. Paul before the game. They made nine trades in the 24 hours preceding Thursday's deadline. Key moment
Gaddis inexplicably threw the ball toward first on Martin's infield hit, instead of holding it, and fired a bouncer past first baseman Santana into right field. Both unearned runs were charged to Erik Sabrowski. Key stat

Coach Don Morrow, in his 33rd season, likes the togetherness of his players. There's good leaders, like linebacker/long snapper Jackson Reach, who's been a standout since his sophomore season. On Wednesday afternoon, it was a pleasant 77 degrees, with drums, flutes and cymbals being heard around the Manhattan Beach campus as band members practiced. Cheerleaders also worked on their routines. Then football players took the field to continue preparation for an Aug. 29 opener against St. Francis. Afterward, anyone could take a walk to the beach and surf. The Meekers have been spending summers in Australia, where their mother was born and raised on a farm. Campbell hasn't been back since and the Sox are trying him as a first baseman There's every chance that Campbell will be a productive player. But for now he's proof that an extension does not come with a guarantee for success. Along with Crochet and Campbell, the Sox also have Brayan Bello, Ceddanne Rafaela, and Garrett Whitlock under control through at least 2029. That was part of the lure for Anthony. 'There's a lot to be excited about and I'm excited,' he said. 'This process was a big reason as to why I wanted to stay here and be with those guys and grow with those guys.' Advertisement The Sox did well to build a relationship with Anthony and gain his trust. Breslow credited assistant GM Paul Toboni with doing 'a ton of work' to get the extension over the finish line. Toboni was director of amateur scouting in 2022 when Anthony was drafted and got to know not just the player but his family. Over the long term that matters. The Sox are unlikely to bat 1.000 with extensions. Wilyer Abreu, Alex Bregman, Marcelo Mayer, and Carlos Narváez are all good candidates for a deal but their expectations may not align with what the Sox are thinking. Scott Boras, who represents Bregman, believes players can only find their true worth as free agents. But he also did the deals when Jose Altuve and Matt Chapman agreed to extensions. Jarren Duran is an interesting case. He turns 29 in September and can't become a free agent until after the 2028 season. He's also a player whose game is built around speed. Projecting what kind of player Duran will be when he's 32 or 33 is difficult. It's a process, as Breslow said. The process worked with Anthony and the Dodgers will have to look elsewhere.
