Monsoon session: New version of I-T bill to be tabled on Monday

Time of India19 hours ago
NEW DELHI: Govt will introduce a fresh version of the Income Tax bill on Monday, incorporating the recommendations of the Select Committee of Parliament. The new bill was approved by the cabinet on Friday as finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman withdrew earlier version of the I-T bill 2025, which was introduced in Lok Sabha in Feb this year.
The revised bill could have been introduced in Parliament on Friday itself, but it could not be done as disruptions forced the House to be adjourned by the time presidential assent was received.
"To avoid confusion by multiple versions of the bill and to provide a clear and updated version with all changes incorporated, the new version of the Income Tax Bill will be introduced for the consideration of the House on Monday," sources said.
The Select Committee of Lok Sabha headed by BJP's Baijayant Panda had examined the IT Bill 2025 and adopted the report on the draft legislation last month. The Parliamentary panel had suggested 285 recommendations on the draft legislation, aimed at simplifying and modernising the country's tax laws.
The IT Bill 2025 was tabled in Parliament on Feb 13 and was aimed at simplifying the language and structure of the Income Tax Act 1961.

It was sent to the Select Committee for examination. The bill will replace the six decade old Income Tax Act 1961.
The simplification exercise was guided by three core principles, which included textual and structural simplification for improved clarity and coherence, no major tax policy changes to ensure continuity and certainty and no modification of tax rates, which is aimed at preserving predictability for taxpayers, an official statement had said.
CBDT chairman Ravi Agrawal in an interview to TOI last month had said that the provisions of law will become far more simpler for any taxpayer to read and understand. He had said the dependence on a professional to understand the law is expected to see some correction. "The use of formulae, tables and consolidation of provisions will enable easier compliance for taxpayers and professionals," Agrawal had added.

Manner in which SIR being conducted in Bihar is not right: Abhishek Singhvi

Jodhpur (Rajasthan) [India], August 9 (ANI): Congress leader Abhishek Manu Singhvi has raised questions over the manner in which the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise is being conducted in poll-bound Bihar and said that instead of relying on documents with people, more documents are being parties have been insisting on a debate on the SIR of electoral rolls in Bihar, and both Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha have faced repeated adjournments on the issue. 'If I show my Aadhar card, and it turns out to be forged, and the same happened with my EPIC card, then they should delete it. However, this exercise is not individual; they claim they won't see the Aadhar card of any five crore people… How many people have the birth certificate of themselves and their parents? … SIR is not the issue, but the way they are conducting this exercise is not right…," Singhvi told reporters. The opposition INDIA bloc has been alleging that the revision process could lead to the deletion of a large number of voters. Earlier today, the Election Commission reiterated that it has not received a single claim or objection from any political party regarding the draft electoral rolls in Bihar.'So far, after over a week since the beginning of the Claims & Objections period, not even a single claim or objection has been submitted by any political party," the poll panel window to submit claims and objections to rectify any errors on draft electoral rolls opened on August the EC has received 7,252 claims and objections directly from the electors with respect to the draft roll till today, said the ECI in a daily bulletin on the special intensive revision (SIR) of the electoral roll in Bihar. Forms received from new electors on attaining 18 years of age or above are 43,000. As per the rules, the claims & objections are to be disposed of by the concerned Electoral Registration Officer/Assistant Electoral Registration Officer (ERO/AERO) after the expiry of 7 days. As per SIR orders, no name can be deleted from the draft list published on August 1, without passing a speaking order by the ERO/AERO after conducting an enquiry and after giving a fair and reasonable opportunity. Over 150 detained in London for defying ban on Palestine Action support

London police have arrested more than 150 protesters for defying a new law banning support for Palestine Action. The arrests come amid a surge in protests across the UK over Gaza, immigration, and government policy. read more Police officers patrol during demonstrator during a protest in support of the Palestinian People in Gaza, in Parliament Square, in London. AP Police in London detained over 150 individuals after protestors purposefully broke a new rule prohibiting support for a pro-Palestinian group, claiming that the legislation unlawfully restricts freedom of expression. London's Metropolitan Police said in a statement on X, that officers are methodically working their way through the crowd, making further arrests. Palestine Action supporters have held a series of rallies around the United Kingdom since early July, when Parliament proscribed the group and forbade anybody from openly supporting it. After demonstrators stormed into a Royal Air Force facility and vandalised two tanker planes, lawmakers outlawed the group as a terrorist organisation. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Police in London started making arrests after hundreds of people intentionally violated a new law banning support for a pro-Palestinian group because they say the legislation improperly restricts freedom of expression. Backers of Palestine Action have staged a series of protests across the U.K. since early July, when Parliament outlawed the group and prohibited anyone from publicly showing support for it. Lawmakers banned the group as a terrorist organization after activists broke into a Royal Air Force base and vandalized two tanker aircraft. Protesters gathered Saturday afternoon in the square outside Parliament, with dozens displaying signs reading 'I oppose genocide. I support Palestine Action.' That was enough for police to step in. 'Within this crowd a significant number of people are displaying placards expressing support for Palestine Action, which is a proscribed group,' the Metropolitan Police Service said on X. 'Officers have moved in and are making arrests.' Home Secretary Yvette Cooper moved to ban Palestine Action after activists broke into a British air force base in southern England on June 20 to protest British military support for Israel's war with Hamas. The activists sprayed red paint into the engines of two tanker planes at the RAF Brize Norton base in Oxfordshire and caused further damage with crowbars. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Palestine Action had previously targeted Israeli defense contractors and other sites in Britain that they believe have links with the Israeli military. Supporters of the group are challenging the ban in court, saying the government has gone too far in declaring Palestine Action a terrorist organization. 'Once the meaning of 'terrorism' is separated from campaigns of violence against a civilian population, and extended to include those causing economic damage or embarrassment to the rich, the powerful and the criminal, then the right to freedom of expression has no meaning and democracy is dead,' the group Defend Our Juries said on its website. The arrests outside Parliament came amid what is expected to be a busy weekend of demonstrations in London as the war in Gaza and concerns about immigration spur protests and counter-protests across the United Kingdom. While Prime Minister Keir Starmer has angered Israel with plans to recognize a Palestinian state later this year, many Palestinian supporters in Britain criticize the government for not doing enough to end the war in Gaza. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Pro-Palestinian protesters were gathering Saturday afternoon in central London for a march that is scheduled to end outside the gates of No. 10 Downing Street, the prime minister's official residence and offices. On Sunday, a number of groups are scheduled to march through central London to demand the safe release of the Israeli hostages in Gaza. Palestinian militants have held the captives since they attacked Israel on Oct. 7, 2023. Police are also preparing for protests outside hotels across the country that are being used to house asylum seekers. Protesters and counter-protesters have squared off outside the hotels in recent weeks, with some saying the migrants pose a risk to their communities and others decrying anti-immigrant racism. Deputy Assistant Commissioner Ade Adelekan said the scale of the events would 'put pressure' on the police department. 'This is going to be a particularly busy few days in London with many simultaneous protests and events that will require a significant policing presence,' Adelekan said before the protests began. Karnataka minister urges Election Commission to treat Rahul'svote theft claims as suo motu plaint

Bengaluru: Law and parliamentary affairs minister HK Patil on Saturday urged the Election Commission (EC) of India to address the allegations of voter list manipulation instead of offering excuses. He asserted that Lok Sabha opposition leader Rahul Gandhi's claims, supported by documents and scientific analysis, should be treated as a suo motu complaint. Patil emphasised that as a constitutional body, EC must act with transparency and urgency. "Lame excuses of procedural red tape, like demanding affidavits, should not be used to shirk its fundamental responsibility to safeguard democracy and the sanctity of elections," he said. Patil recalled discussing allegations of manipulative voter list and missing EVMs in the Karnataka assembly on March 29, 2022. He presented documents in the assembly that were sent to EC by the then speaker. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Free P2,000 GCash eGift UnionBank Credit Card Apply Now Undo In response, EC questioned the right and privilege of discussing electoral malpractices in the assembly. Patil said, "Why did EC not file a complaint or seek an affidavit from the speaker or the member who exposed EC for lapses and malpractices? Why were complaints of election malpractices not even inquired into?" he said. "Irresponsible responses by a constitutional body like EC will only be detrimental to the interest of democracy," the minister added. State govt will examine allegations: CM Chief minister Siddaramaiah said the law department will examine the allegations of vote theft during the Lok Sabha election 2024, and action will be taken as per its recommendations. Speaking to reporters here Saturday, he stated MP Rahul Gandhi advised the govt to act on the vote theft, and the matter would be examined before civic body elections in Bengaluru, the CM revealed. "Advocate general is advised to review the issue at the earliest and submit a report," Siddaramaiah stated. "Is it possible for 80 people to stay in a small room?" the CM questioned. "BJP is misleading the public. Our internal survey estimated that we would win 16 Lok Sabha constituencies in 2024, but we won 9. Rahul Gandhi is speaking about the issue with documents," he said. "We have been talking about irregularities in the election for a long time," Siddaramaiah stated. ——- Ibrahim alleges vote buying for CM's 2018 Badami win, Siddaramaiah denies Times News Network Mysuru: Former union minister CM Ibrahim, once a close confidant of chief minister Siddaramaiah, has stirred a political controversy by claiming that he and former minister BB Chimmanakatti bought 3,000 votes in Badami to secure Siddaramaiah's win during the 2018 assembly elections. Siddaramaiah, however, denied the allegations. In what was a closely fought election, Siddaramaiah had defeated BJP candidate B Sreeramulu by a narrow margin of 1,696 votes in Badami. Speaking at an event in Mysuru Friday, Ibrahim said he had advised Siddaramaiah not to contest from Chamundeshwari — against JD(S) candidate GT Devegowda — and urged him to consider Badami instead. "We bought 3,000 votes, which led to Siddaramaiah's victory. He paid the money after six months," claimed Ibrahim. Siddaramaiah firmly denied the allegations. "Ibrahim is no longer in our party," he said. "I visited Badami constituency only twice — once to file my nomination and once for campaigning. It is true that Ibrahim was there, but this information is new to me," the CM said. Asked about a viral video clip in which he was purportedly heard saying even the dead had voted for him in the 2006 Chamundeshwari byelection, Siddaramaiah denied making any such remark. "If dead people voted, then the Election Commission is responsible," he said. Siddaramaiah said if not for IAS officer Peter, who was the general observer during the 2006 Chamundeshwari byelection, he would have lost the contest.
