Bestselling GLC goes plug-in hybrid. It's ultra quiet … until the virtual assistant chimes in

As I cruise along in the Mercedes GLC 350e, I decide to do a little silent running. This model, new for 2025, is a plug-in hybrid with a pure electric range of 87 kilometres. Let's see how it works!
As I switch into Electric-only mode via the car's gigantic 11.9-inch touchscreen, my tester does, indeed, go silent. Cool!
The transition from the default hybrid mode, which draws on the GLC 350's turbo four-cylinder engine, to pure electricity is seamless. And I move along in silence, with only faint road and wind noise penetrating a hushed cabin. Wow!
If I don't want to use up all the electric range in one go, I can switch over to Battery Hold mode, which saves it for later. Doing so reverts the GLC 350e to gasoline power, and I can hear the turbo engine spool up when I accelerate. It doesn't make much racket, except when I stand on the accelerator. I do so a few times to test it, and this non-AMG Mercedes responds eagerly.
Powering the GLC 350e is Mercedes stalwart 2.0-litre, turbo, four-cylinder engine, which produces 201 horsepower and 236 pounds-feet of torque, or motive force. Working with the engine is an electric motor that pumps out 134 hp and 325 lbs.-ft. Total system output is rated at 313 hp and 406 lbs.-ft.
A 24.8-kWh battery is also on board, and the GLC 350e supports DC fast charging ($600 option) which is rare among plug-in hybrid cars. Plug-ins usually support slower Level 2 charging, which takes several hours to charge the battery completely. On the other hand, fast charging my tester from 20 per cent to 80 per cent took less than 30 minutes.
The engine makes uses of a nine-speed automatic transmission and power is sent to all four wheels via Mercedes' 4MATIC all-wheel drive system.
The GLC, one of Mercedes' global bestsellers, was all-new in 2023, and hasn't changed much over the past two years. The 350e is new, but it carries much of the GLC family look and feel. Features, such as a Chrome star grille, body colour wheel arches and 20-inch wheels are available on other GLC models. The latter two are AMG touches that have been attached as an option to my Spectral Blue Metallic test vehicle.
Inside, the synthetic leather seating material (which Mercedes calls ARTICO) is comfortable, and I like that the driver's seat can be articulated in lots of different ways. The feel of the thick-rimmed sport steering wheel is also pleasing, but it's not standard. Mercedes stuffed it into a $3,900 AMG Line package which comes with a bunch of other stuff. Some may like these giant packages, but I don't. I wish popular items, such as sport steering wheels, could be ordered individually. Oh well.
Overall, the cabin is quite pretty. However you may feel about big screens in new cars these days, it would be wrong to say Mercedes hasn't done a good job with theirs. The giant 11.9-inch portrait-style infotainment touchscreen is easy to use and has excellent resolution and colour range. And it's quick to respond, which is important given how much functionality it contains. The 12.3-inch instrument cluster display is equally impressive. Its graphical display is sharp and highly customizable.
Turbine-style air vents, rich ambient lighting, and no-nonsense wireless Apple CarPlay are big hits for me in the GLC 350e's cabin. Things that thrilled me less include a very sensitive MBUX (Mercedes-Benz User Experience) virtual assistant that would randomly intrude on a consistent basis. A few times it gave me a real jolt, which I didn't appreciate. I'm sure it can be adjusted somehow, but the default is very sensitive. Too sensitive. And too chatty. This car needs a friend, I think to myself.
I'll also ding Mercedes for the lack of a volume knob in favour of a haptic slider that may look nice in a marketing presentation but is needlessly fussy to use. Knobs are just better. I wish automakers would just concede this point and leave them be.
But these things annoy me less as my week with the GLC 350e rolls on. This Mercedes SUV is handsome, well-equipped and offers electrification that is a good alternative to gas-only propulsion. Sure, 87 km isn't 400 km, but if you charge at home you won't need to use much gas during your daily routines. And being able to tap into fast charging is a huge plus for a plug-in hybrid. If you're not ready to go full EV, the GLC 350e is worth considering.
But that virtual assistant sure takes some getting used to.

Ferrari Boss Slams F1 Media For Rumors That Delayed His Contract Extension

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Scuderia Ferrari Formula One team principal Fred Vasseur has hit out at the media for allegedly spreading rumors that delayed his contract extension. Vasseur was also frustrated about the speculation surrounding his driver, Charles Leclerc, and the team's chassis technical director, Loïc Serra. Ferrari has been experiencing several challenges this season, mostly pertaining to the team's SF-25 F1 car and Lewis Hamilton's struggles in adapting to the car. Vasseur's future with the team had not been confirmed until an announcement was made just before the summer break. The delay led to rumors that he might be asked to step down by Ferrari. What added fuel to the speculation was Red Bull's ousting of its team principal, Christian Horner, after the British Grand Prix, leading to reports about Ferrari replacing Vasseur with Horner. Vasseur admitted that the rumors created "turmoil" within his team, especially since Italian fans "react more emotionally" to any news about Ferrari, a team they are extremely passionate about. The rumor mill didn't spare Leclerc either, linking him to a potential switch to Mercedes, despite him revealing his commitment to Ferrari. Vasseur also opened up on how a rumor blamed Serra for the problems on the SF-25, even though he joined the team in October 2024. Ferrari team principal Fred Vasseur on the grid during the F1 Grand Prix of Belgium at Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps on July 28, 2024 in Spa, Belgium. Ferrari team principal Fred Vasseur on the grid during the F1 Grand Prix of Belgium at Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps on July 28, 2024 in Spa, to Auto Motor und Sport, Vasseur called out the media for spreading the rumors and acknowledged the challenge in stopping them. He said: "Rumors caused the turmoil. I didn't start them, the media did. Neither Ferrari nor I spoke. But today, you can't avoid such interference. I don't want to tar all journalists with the same brush. But with the internet, reporting has become much more aggressive. "There's a pressure to generate clicks. When these rumors first surfaced in Canada, I was really angry. Because they went too far. "My technical director, Loïc Serra, was accused of not doing a good job. And yet, the 2025 car was practically ready when Loïc started working for us. "The story with Charles Leclerc was similar. Some people regularly wrote that Charles was going to Mercedes. Nobody cared that he repeatedly confirmed he had a long-term contract with Ferrari." Vasseur then explained the impact such reporting has had on his team, highlighting that his contract extension would have happened much earlier without the rumors. He said: "That has an impact on the team. In Italy, people react more emotionally. Without this background noise, my talks with Ferrari would have been much quicker."

Mercedes-AMG SL 63 S E Performance Adds F1 Power To An Iconic Roadster

The Mercedes-Benz SL roadster, a sleek, luxury-filled convertible, has been an icon of sporty luxury and the pinnacle of top-down driving since it made its debut in 1954. Over the years Mercedes-Benz has retooled the SL adding things like heated arm rests and all wheel drive to ensure the SL is capable and accommodating on all roads in all seasons. But for 2025 the Mercedes-AMG SL takes on a new distinction thanks to the company's F1 experience: electric boosted twin-turbo power that notches horsepower up to 805 and torque to 1,047, putting it solidly in hyper-car territory. Don't let the looks of this demure convertible fool you; it's a thrill. AMG-Only Production Adds To The Mystique Back in the day, Mercedes-Benz produced an SL for all luxury appetites, ranging from smaller powertrains to high performance. But for the current generation the company decided to focus on performance, offering four options produced by the house of AMG, the Affalterbach, Germany-based performance division of Mercedes-Benz. The starting point is the AMG SL 43 Roadster, a 4-cylinder turbo that generates 416 hp and starts at $112,000; the SL 55 increases power to 469 hp and the price to $145,000; the SL 63 Roadster generates 577 hp and is priced from $187,000. The F1-inflected, PHEV boosted SL 63 S E Performance starts at $207000; our test model, equipped with a nice set of upgrades, came in at $225,000, making it a true pinnacle of both luxury and sport driving. External Cues Let You Know This Mercedes-AMG Is A Powerful Machine The iterations of power and luxury are notable by each model name, of course, but the S E Performance gets a little extra panache: A red-backed 'S' badge that signifies its 805 hp and 2.8-second 0-60 MPH acceleration. The red-flecked badge is also seen on the side panels under the V8 Biturbo badge, yet another nod to the roadster's power. On the rear there's a retractable spoiler that deploys when the car hits a minimum speed and needs the downforce assistance, though a button on the control panel under the multimedia screen can deploy or retract it, too. Just under the wing is a small power port for charging. On the front end of the AMG SL 63 S E Performance conveys the luxury of Mercedes-Benz and its AMG Affalterbach heritage with a crest on the hood just above the Mercedes logo badge. The Many Performance Options Allow A Custom Experience The great thing about a performance PHEV is that you get to choose when and how to put the car's power to work: creep out of the neighborhood in silence in hybrid mode; the electric motor will deliver about eight miles of all-electric driving before the gas engine kicks in. Or, turn the drive mode dial on the steering wheel to Sport to crank up both the power and the sound. While owners can charge the Mercedes-AMG SL 63 S E Performance for maximum hybrid range, there's no real need to charge the roadster to ensure there's enough electric power to deliver all 805 hp. The system is designed to maintain a minimum amount of power and to regenerate its charge on its own while you drive. In our first test of its sister S E Performance, the AMG C 63, the battery nearly fully recharged on a day of driving through the mountains of Southern California. Manufaktur Options Increase the Luxury Quotient The luxury of the AMG SL 63 S E Performance starts with the soft-top convertible, a quickly-retracting top that can be operated even while driving. With the top down the cabin feels like chic and refined, not overly windy or loud. With the top up the outside world is hushed thanks to a nicely constructed soft top that dampens outside noise. The heated, cooled massaging quilted leather front seats add to the quiet luxury of the cabin. Buyers who want to really personalize their SL 63 can choose Manufaktur options, bespoke details that include a wider range of colors and trim details for a unique and personal style package. Our model came standard with some of the best Mercedes goodies: Burmester premium sound, 'Hey Mercedes' voice activation, Napa leather massage seats and 'air scarf,' a neck-level vent on the front seats that blows warm air on cold days. This is especially nice when the top is down. Not that the SL 63 S E Performance needed any extras to make it the most desirable SL; its F1 DNA and dynamic drive experience make it a true thrill, adding another dimension to its luxury heritage.

BlackSky Signs Seven-Figure Space Domain Awareness Expansion Contract with HEO for Fully Automated Non-Earth Imaging Missions

Imagery data services deal unlocks additional Gen-2 constellation value and brings unprecedented speed to pattern-of-life insights for orbiting spacecraft and other objects of interest HERNDON, Va., August 19, 2025--(BUSINESS WIRE)--BlackSky Technology Inc. (NYSE: BKSY) signed a seven-figure Gen-2 space domain awareness expansion contract with HEO to provide fully-automated low-latency non-Earth imaging (NEI) services for defense, intelligence and commercial use. The imagery data services deal is now moving into its fourth phase after completing the automation of the entire tasking-to-delivery process. "BlackSky's high-resolution Gen-2 high-cadence monitoring constellation continues to contribute valuable insight for space domain awareness," said Brian O'Toole, BlackSky CEO. "As on-orbit activities continue to increase, global monitoring efforts are expanding beyond terrestrial intelligence to include space intelligence. Automatically tasking and receiving NEI products reflects yet another pioneering innovation that gives customers reliable and actionable insight about spacecraft or on-orbit objects of interest at mission speed." As part of the contract, HEO's software platform will autonomously identify imaging opportunities and task BlackSky's high-resolution Gen-2 satellites to detect, track, characterize, and classify objects in orbit, as well as assess potential threats and predict their effects. BlackSky's high-cadence imaging satellites fly in mid-inclination orbit and are expected to increase the feasibility of capturing NEI data over the middle latitudes of Earth, at certain times and places. The rapid tasking and delivery of NEI are expected to support critical space domain awareness applications, including constellation monitoring and anomaly detection. "BlackSky has the ability to leverage remaining capacity typically associated with satellites passing over the ocean or satellites in eclipse, traveling across the dark side of Earth. Customers can now use that excess capacity, with a high-quality user experience, to monitor objects in space with no humans in the loop," said O'Toole. "Achieving true space awareness is going to require levels of inspection platforms across orbits, ready to capture imagery at a moment's notice and HEO is building exactly that," said Dr. Will Crowe, Co-Founder and CEO of HEO. "BlackSky's high-resolution satellites and automated capacity give us eyes in mid-inclination orbit, turning downtime into an intelligence goldmine for operators who need to know what's happening around their assets, when it happens." HEO added BlackSky's constellation into its current NEI sensor network in 2024. Customers can now request NEI products through HEO's automated tasking and delivery platform, HEO Inspect. Once collected, BlackSky Gen-2 NEI and metadata are transferred into HEO Inspect where object detection and identification algorithms generate advanced analytics reports that include information such as a satellite's attitude and location, subsystems identification and pattern-of-life analyses.
