Melaka cops bust drug syndicate with arrest of four men
MELAKA: Police have busted a drug trafficking syndicate after they raided a house near Taman Krubong Perdana and seized RM320,000 worth of methamphetamine.
Melaka Tengah district police chief ACP Christopher Patit said four men aged between 19 and 50 were arrested in the raid at 11.30pm on April 30.
"Further inspection of the suspects led to the seizure of 10,000 grammes of methamphetamine.
"This syndicate is believed to have been actively operating since early this year. The seized drugs were believed to be intended for markets in a neighbouring country and could have been used by as many as 33,333 addicts," he said in a statement today.
Christopher added that police also confiscated a car and three motorcycles belonging to the suspects, estimated to be worth RM59,000.
He said initial urine tests on all four suspects came back negative for drug use.
"Background checks revealed that one of the suspects, aged 50, had two prior cases — one under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 and another under Section 6(1) of the Dangerous Drugs (Special Preventive Measures) Act 1985.
"All the suspects have been remanded for seven days from May 2 to 8, and the case is being investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952," he added.

Two policemen, ex-cop claim trial to graft charges
ALOR STAR: Two policemen and a former cop claimed trial to corruption charges at the Sessions Court here today. Lance Corporal Ahmad Rabani Rusnizal, 29, and Lance Corporal Mohamad Shukre Mohamed Rowi, 37, together with former police corporal Wan Mohd Nor Imran Wan Seman, 35, entered the plea before judge N. Priscilla Hemamalini. According to the charge, the three of them, acting with common intent, allegedly agreed to accept a bribe of RM20,000 in cash from Azizi Norhafizi Abu Bakar as an inducement not to take action against him for being in possession of methamphetamine (syabu). At the time of the alleged offence, all three were serving in the Crime Prevention Branch at Merbok police station. The offence is alleged to have taken place at the Semeling police post, Kuala Muda, at 11.30pm on July 23, 2023. Meanwhile, in the same court, Ahmad Rabani, Mohamad Shukre and another policeman, Corporal Azmil Rizal Azhar, 34, also pleaded not guilty to two other charges. For the first of these charges, the three accused allegedly agreed, with common intent, to accept a bribe of RM10,000 from Azizi Norhafizi as an inducement not to take action against him for possessing methamphetamine. They also claimed trial to a separate charge for allegedly receiving RM5,000 bribe from the same individual under similar circumstances. The two offences were allegedly committed at the Semeling police post and at a 7-Eleven outlet in Taman Lembah Bujang Indah, Merbok, on Oct 25 and 26, 2023, respectively. All charges were framed under Section 17(a) of the MACC Act 2009. If found guilty, they face a maximum prison sentence of 20 years and a fine of not less than five times the amount of the bribe or RM10,000 — whichever is higher. The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission prosecutor, Mohd Zulfadli Azharudin prosecuted all cases, while all the accused were represented by counsel Siti Salwa Ja'afar. Zulfadli proposed that the court set RM10,000 bail for each of the accused, but Siti Salwa pleaded for half of the amount. The court subsequently set bail at RM8,000, with Ahmad Rabani and Mohamad Shukre each required to pay RM16,000. July 20 has been fixed as mention date.

28 safe after bus crashes into trailer on expressway
MARAN: Twenty-eight passengers including 13 Universiti Malaysia Pahang Al-Sultan Abdullah (UMPSA) students escaped unhurt after the bus they were travelling in crashed into the rear of a trailer at Km161 of the East Coast Expressway near here today. The 1am accident today involved a tour bus which was travelling from Terminal Bersepadu Selatan, Kuala Lumpur towards Terminal Sentral Kuantan(TSK). The 38-year-old bus driver and the the 40-year-old Nissan lorry driver also did not sustain any injuries. Maran police chief Superintendent Wong Kim Wai said both the bus and lorry were travelling in the same direction towards Kuantan. "The bus ferrying 28 passengers from Kuala Lumpur to TSK was travelling on the slow lane when it crashed into the rear of the trailer. "All the 28 passengers did not sustain any injuries. They were transferred to another bus to continue their journey to TSK," he said in a statement today. Wong said the crash is being investigated under Section 43(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for careless and inconsiderate driving, which carries a penalty of up to RM10,000 and a jail term of up to 12 months. This crash involving university students comes after Monday's bus tragedy in Gerik, Perak, where 15 undergraduates were killed.

KTMB blames cable theft for train delays up north, plans RM12.8 million prevention upgrade

KTMB in a statement said among the affected locations were the Tapah Road - Sungkai (KM250.5) route with approximately 200 metres of cable stolen, Kamunting - Bukit Merah - Bagan Serai (KM87.25) with 110 metres stolen, and Simpang Ampat - Bukit Mertajam (KM15.5) with 40 metres affected. Advertisement The incident disrupted train operations, causing significant delays of between 80 and 115 minutes involving the following services; EP9172 (KL Sentral - Butterworth), EG9321 (Butterworth - Segamat), EX9107 (Butterworth - KL Sentral), EX9207 (Padang Besar - KL Sentral), and EG9420 (Segamat - Padang Besar). In addition, the Northern KTM Komuter service on the Ipoh - Butterworth - Ipoh route was also affected, with average delays of 30 minutes. KTMB said early notifications of the disruptions were sent to passengers via SMS and KTMB's official social media platforms. KTMB chief operating officer Mohd Zain Mat Taha in the same statement said 45 cases of cable theft have been recorded in the northern sector from January to May this year. 'This type of theft amounts to sabotage of railway infrastructure and could threaten the safety of hundreds of passengers while also crippling public transportation,' he said. As a mitigation measure, KTMB announced a plan to upgrade its signalling network, involving an estimated cost of RM12.8 million annually over the next three years, with a focus on hotspot areas. Among the planned improvements are installing manhole covers with special locking mechanisms at 21 locations, enhancing surveillance and prevention infrastructure including CCTV cameras and drones, and installing anti-climb security fencing. Additionally, he said monitoring and patrols by KTMB Auxiliary Police with cooperation from the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) would be intensified in hotspot areas to curb theft. 'We (KTMB) would like to call for the public's cooperation to report any suspicious activity to the authorities in order to combat such crime. 'We also apologise for any inconvenience experienced by passengers and remain committed to ensuring train service safety and reliability in the interest of the people and the country,' he added.
