Lewis Hamilton to start Belgian GP from pit lane after taking new power unit

Lewis Hamilton will start from the pit lane for today's Belgian Grand Prix.
The seven-time world champion has endured a troubled weekend at Spa-Francorchamps and had been due to start 16th after he was eliminated in Q1.
However, Hamilton's Ferrari team have confirmed he will start at the back of the pack after taking on a new power unit.

Hamilton described his performances so far this weekend as 'unacceptable' after he started 18th and finished only 15th in the sprint race earlier and then failed to progress to Q2 in qualifying for Sunday's main event.
Hamilton's best lap was chalked off by the stewards after he ran all four wheels of his Ferrari off the circuit at Raidillon.
'I don't agree (with the stewards' decision), but I'm out,' said the 40-year-old. 'It was another mistake from my side and I have to look internally.
'I have to apologise to my team because it is just unacceptable to be out in both Q1s this weekend. A very, very poor performance.'
Hamilton is without a podium for Ferrari – the deepest he has ever gone into a season without a top-three finish.

Who is Felipe Drugovich? Fernando Alonso replacement at F1 Hungarian Grand Prix

Felipe Drugovich walked into the Hungarian Grand Prix paddock with girlfriend Carla Sirotti on Friday morning perhaps not knowing he would be called up by Aston Martin After almost three years of waiting, this could be the weekend that Felipe Drugovich finally lives his childhood dream. He is in line to potentially make his competitive debut at the Hungarian Grand Prix in the place of the injured Fernando Alonso. ‌ The Spaniard made the journey to Budapest and completed his media day duties as normal on Thursday. But, on Friday morning, Aston Martin confirmed their veteran driver, who turned 44 earlier this week, would not take part in the first practice session of the weekend. ‌ "In the days following the Belgian Grand Prix, Fernando Alonso has been managing a muscular injury in his back," a team statement read. "As he continues with treatment this morning, he has chosen to sit out of FP1. Felipe Drugovich will drive in FP1 alongside Lance Stroll." ‌ It has not yet been decided whether Alonso will get back in the car at any point this weekend. As is often the case when a drivers' participation is in doubt, the team will wait for as long as possible before making any final decision. But if Alonso's condition does not improve, then Drugovich is set to make his long-awaited bow in Formula 1 racing. It is the opportunity the Brazilian driver, 25, has been waiting for ever since winning the Formula 2 title back in 2022, only to fail to make the leap into the top category. He signed with Aston Martin as the first member of their newly-formed driver academy in the days after his F2 success was confirmed. He immediately became a reserve driver for their F1 team and has made several practice and testing outings in that role, but has been stuck frustratingly on the sidelines in terms of racing. Drugovich spent the entirety of 2023 on the sidelines but the following year chose to pair his reserve driver responsibilities with a switch to endurance racing. He finished 15th in his one and only season in the European Le Mans Series, having scored one podium at the Four Hours of Imola. ‌ He also made his debut in the famous 24 Hours of Le Mans race that year, finishing 15th in the Hypercar class with Whelen Cadillac Racing. He again represented the team in the 2025 edition of the race, sharing a car with Brit Jack Aitken and Mercedes F1 reserve Frederik Vesti, but retired after 247 laps because of an engine issue. Drugovich has also tested in IndyCar and the all-electric Formula E series as he keeps his single-seater racing options open. He raced in FE at the Berlin ePrix last month, called up by Mahindra Racing to fill in for the absent Nyck de Vries and finished his first race way down in 17th place after picking up a drive-through penalty. But things improved in the second event of the double-header as he climbed 12 places to finish seventh and score points. He was born in Brazil and races under the flag of his homeland, but also holds Italian citizenship. He shares little about his personal life in public, but is regularly tagged in posts on Instagram by his girlfriend Carla Sirotti, who is in Hungary with him this weekend and could get to witness his F1 racing debut in person if Alonso fails to recover.

Who is Felipe Drugovich? Fernando Alonso's Hungarian Grand Prix replacement

Fernando Alonso may miss the Hungarian Grand Prix after the two-time Formula 1 champion suffered a back injury on the eve of the race. F1 is at the Hungaroring this weekend in the final race before the summer break. However, one of the sport's biggest stars may not be racing after Aston Martin shockingly announced on Friday morning that Alonso will miss the first practice session through injury. 'In the days following the Belgian Grand Prix, Fernando Alonso has been managing a muscular injury in his back,' a team statement read. 'As he continues with treatment this morning, he has chosen to sit out of FP1. Felipe Drugovich will drive in FP1 alongside Lance Stroll. 'A decision will then be made on Fernando's participation in FP2 and the remainder of the weekend in due course.' The announcement came less than three hours before FP1 was due to begin, leaving Alonso's participation for the race in serious doubt. The Spaniard, who celebrated his 44th birthday on Wednesday, is the oldest driver on the grid and the most experienced in F1 history with 417 grand prix entries to his name. This season has been a struggle for the veteran and Aston Martin, with Alonso and Stroll 15th and 13th in the standings ahead of Hungary. Aston Martin have confirmed that Drugovich will replace Alonso for FP1 and will do so for the rest of the weekend if the Spaniard is not passed fit. Drugovich has been Aston Martin's test and reserve driver for the past four seasons and while he has driven in six practice sessions, he is yet to make his full F1 debut. More Trending The 25-year-old won the Formula 2 championship in 2022, beating the likes of Racing Bulls star Liam Lawson and former Williams driver Logan Sargeant. Since then, the Brazilian has taken part in only a handful of races in endurance series and Formula E. Drugovich nearly made his F1 debut at the start of 2023 when injuries from a bike accident ruled Stroll out of pre-season testing but the Canadian recovered in time to race at the season opener in Bahrain. F1 Hungarian GP LIVE: Practice schedule and start time with Fernando Alonso doubtful for Budapest race

F1 returns to Budapest for the Hungarian Grand Prix this weekend, round 14 of the 2025 season and the last race before the summer break. Fernando Alonso has been ruled out of FP1 through injury, with Aston Martin sending in Felipe Drugovich as his replacement. Championship leader Oscar Piastri won the Belgian Grand Prix last time out, with an early overtake on McLaren teammate and title rival Lando Norris sealing his sixth victory of the season. The Australian now has a 16-point lead over the Briton. Charles Leclerc secured a podium finish for Ferrari, while Lewis Hamilton recovered from a pit-lane start to come home seventh. However, the seven-time world champion is still chasing a first podium for the Scuderia. Red Bull's Max Verstappen won the sprint race at the first race under new team principal Laurent Mekies, while Mercedes endured a weekend to forget. Piastri won last year's race in Hungary - his first F1 victory - after a contentious team order decision instructed Norris to give up the lead. Secret documents and a rallying cry: How Lewis Hamilton is trying to revive Ferrari Prior to a Belgian Grand Prix weekend to forget for Lewis Hamilton, whose last F1 win came here a year ago with Mercedes, the question posed to the Ferrari driver without a podium to his name this year was an innocuous one. His answer, however, was an unyielding message to his beleaguered Ferrari team. Asked whether he'd been at the Maranello factory in the last few weeks, Hamilton replied that he had. A 'couple of days each week', he detailed. Then, untriggered, the British driver, often so reluctant to reveal the inner workings of his mind, went into full disclosure mode. 'I've called on lots of meetings with the heads of the team, so I've sat with John [Elkann], Benedetto [Vigna] and Fred [Vasseur],' Hamilton said, referring to the Ferrari chair, CEO and team principal – the three-pronged executive team who lured the 40-year-old to the Scuderia. Four-time F1 world champion Verstappen, who has a £50m-a-deal until the end of the 2028 season, has been strongly linked with Mercedes in recent months ahead of a new set of F1 regulations next year, with the Silver Arrows the rumoured frontrunners. Mercedes boss Toto Wolff has previously declared his interest in signing one of the sport's generational talents. Verstappen has also only won two races this year in a car which is the fourth-quickest on the grid and, as detailed by The Independent on Tuesday, the Dutchman has an exit clause allowing him to leave if he is lower than third in the drivers' standings by the summer break.
