Yousriya Loza-Sawiris Named to the Inaugural 2025 TIME100 Philanthropy List
Cairo, May 20, 2025 –TIME has named Yousriya Loza-Sawiris to its inaugural TIME100 Philanthropy list, honoring 100 of the world's most influential philanthropic changemakers. The list celebrates visionaries who have dedicated their resources, expertise, and time to creating lasting, transformative impact in communities around the world.
Loza-Sawiris, Chairwoman and founder of the Sawiris Foundation for Social Development (SFSD), joins a distinguished group of global philanthropic leaders, recognized for their lifelong commitment to social equity and human dignity.
Since establishing the foundation in 2001 with the support of the Sawiris family, Loza-Sawiris has championed initiatives that have transformed the lives of thousands across Egypt—advancing quality education, expanding access to healthcare, fostering economic empowerment, and providing emergency relief. With her leadership, the foundation has adopted an evidence-based, impact-driven approach, marked by strategic investments and informed decision-making. This is to ensure the most effective use of resources and lasting social impact.
Mrs. Sawiris firmly believes that meaningful change begins through genuine collaboration with local communities — a principle that has shaped the Foundation's approach since its inception. By forging strategic partnerships with government, the private sector, and civil society, the Foundation has launched sustainable development initiatives that have delivered tangible, lasting impact in Egypt's most underserved areas.
Her journey in philanthropy, however, began long before the foundation was established. In 1979, she committed herself to supporting one of Cairo's most underserved communities—the garbage collector community, whose residents had relied on informal waste collection and recycling for survival since the 1940s. Her work has since remained grounded in the belief that meaningful development must be built from the ground up—through trust, humility, and shared purpose.
Reflecting on the recognition, Loza-Sawiris said: 'It is an honor to be included in TIME's first-ever Philanthropy100 list, but this recognition is not a personal achievement—it represents years of collective effort, shared vision, and deep partnerships with individuals who truly believe in the power of social change. Mrs. Loza-Sawiris is the only Egyptian included in this prestigious global list, alongside prominent figures such as Oprah Winfrey, Warren Buffett, Mukesh and Nita Ambani, Abdul Aziz Al Ghurair, Melinda Gates, Micheal Bloomberg, Peter Singer, Mackenzie Scott, as well as members of the British royal family, Prince William and Princess Catherine of Wales.

At the local level, the Foundation received 189 nominations distributed across the following categories: Distinguished Student Award (122), Local Distinguished Teacher Award (30), Local Distinguished Educator Award (20), Distinguished Undergraduate University Student Award (7), Local Distinguished School Award (8), and Education Supporting Institutions (2). At the Gulf level, there were 105 nominations, including 31 in the Distinguished Student Award category (academic and non-academic), 30 in the Distinguished Teacher Award, 16 in the Distinguished Educator Award, and 28 in the Distinguished School Award. This year's cycle also recorded notable growth compared to last year, with broader participation across categories and a higher level of competitiveness. This reflects the increasing interest of individuals and educational institutions in showcasing best practices and achievements in the field of education. The judging committees—comprising leading experts in various educational fields—will evaluate the entries based on rigorous methodologies that ensure transparency and fairness, leading to the selection of winners who will be honored at a special ceremony to be held later this year.

Massive Public Turnout for the Launch of the Third Hieroglyphics Learning Group
Ali abo deshish In an atmosphere brimming with enthusiasm and passion for ancient Egyptian civilization, the historic Prince Taz Palace in Cairo hosted the launch of the third group of the Ancient Egyptian Language – Hieroglyphics course, organized by the Zahi Hawass Foundation for Antiquities and Heritage in cooperation with the Cultural Development Fund. The event saw an impressive public turnout, with more than 500 participants from various segments of Egyptian society, particularly youth. The course opened with a scholarly lecture delivered by Dr. Mohamed Hassan, a specialist in Egyptology and the Ancient Egyptian language, who discussed the origins of Egyptian civilization, the development of hieroglyphic writing, and provided an overview of phonetic and writing rules, as well as methods for reading and understanding ancient texts. The session drew significant interaction from the audience. FDF launches ‘Let Us Protect Our Elders with Love' guide during a press conference - Middle East Business News and Information
Under the directives of Her Highness Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak The Family Development Foundation (FDF) launched a guide titled 'Let Us Protect Our Elders with Love,' under the directives of Her Highness Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak, 'Mother of the Nation,' Chairwoman of the General Women's Union (GWU), President of the Supreme Council for Motherhood and Childhood, and Supreme Chairwoman of FDF. The launch was held during a press conference at the Foundation's Abu Dhabi Centre. The guide aims to raise awareness on the significance of offering respectful care for senior citizens and underscore the key principles that ensure they lead an honourable life that is defined by appreciation, inclusion and active engagement within the family and society. In conjunction with World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, the press conference paved the way to raise community awareness on the challenges faced by elderly people while highlighting the pivotal role of families in ensuring a safe, compassionate environment that positively contributes to their mental and physical well-being. Furthermore, the event strengthened the long-term values of loyalty, gratitude and intergenerational solidarity. The conference was attended by H.E. Mariam Mohammed Al Rumaithi, Director General of the FDF; H.E. Abdulrahman Al Baloushi, Director of the Strategic Planning and Institutional Development Department; H.E. Saeed Al Ghafli, Director of Support Services Department; and H.E. Wafa Al Ali, Director of the Family Development Department at FDF.
