Liverpool fans gleefully remind Gary Neville of humiliating Sky Sports moment

Yahoo07-03-2025
Liverpool fans reminded Manchester United icon Gary Neville of what one supporter described as "the worst piece of punditry" in football history - after he announced he was "not nervous" before his old club lost 7-0 at Anfield.
Reds fans celebrated the second anniversary of one of the greatest nights ever witnessed by the Kop faithful on March 5. In a result that reverberated around the globe, Jurgen Klopp's men put seven past a stunned Reds Devils side, with Mohamed Salah, Cody Gakpo and Darwin Nunez leading the charge with a brace each.
In a poetic end to proceedings, club legend Roberto Firmino - who was destined to depart Merseyside in the summer that followed - put the seal on the victory with a seventh in the closing stages. The result made even more sweet for many Kopites, not least due to the confident proclamations from ex-Old Trafford stalwart Neville in the lead-up to kick-off in L4.

Giving his predictions ahead of the game, he informed Anfield hero Graeme Souness that he felt "relaxed" about his beloved team's chances. He said on Sky Sports: "I'm not nervous. I've never been more relaxed coming here in the last nine years as a Manchester United fan. Honestly, do you know, this bunch are tough."
Looking back over this faux pas from Neville, one fan quoted the post and could not resist engaging in some light humor at the Red Devils legend's expense, saying: "Happy anniversary to all who celebrate," as a second said: "'This bunch are tough' might be the worst piece of punditry in the history of the sport."
A third then chipped in to offer some feedback to the outspoken Sky Sports pundit, saying: "Classic G-Nev before his team got absolutely destroyed, then he turned around and said Liverpool didn't even play that well," before a fourth added: "Look at how smug he is hahahaha won't see anything like that again for a long time."
The overall message behind the final comment above appeared to be a view shared by then-Liverpool boss Klopp too, who described the result as a "once in a lifetime" occurrence. Reacting after what was a historic game, he admitted: "The 7-0 we knew that day, it was a freak result that happens once in a lifetime.
"If it helps anyone for the next game it is the team who lost 7-0 and not the team who won 7-0. If you take it all out of consideration and just play a football game against the historical rival of Liverpool at home at Anfield that itself must make it a special game and that's what I want to see from us, a special game.'
Fast forward a couple of years and it is clear that Neville is determined not to make a similar mistake as he predicted that old foes Liverpool will clinch the Premier League title this term. Speaking on Sky Sports, the ex-England mainstay said: 'I can't see complacency [being an issue].
"They've got so much experience and look in control. They've adapted pretty well all season. Injuries are the only thing. The only thing you would say is that the team that is behind you is there waiting for you… but the team that are behind them are NOT their waiting for them. They are fumbling around."

Former Washington Football Star Shines in Steelers Debut

In his first preseason game for the Pittsburgh Steelers, former Washington linebacker Carson Bruener showed he is worthy of a roster spot. The son of ex-Steelers tight end Mark Bruener and seventh-round pick in the 2025 NFL draft led the way with 7 total tackles (5 solo) to help lift coach Mike Tomlin's team to a 31-25 victory over the Jacksonville Jaguars on Saturday night. Bruener, a team captain and starting linebacker for the Huskies in 2024, had a handful of tackles on special teams in his NFL debut, an area where the Steelers' legacy could make an impact as a rookie. Over his five seasons at UW, the 6-foot-1, 227-pounder proved himself capable as a special teams enforcer, earning team MVP honors for the Huskies' unit in 2023 as he waited his turn at linebacker behind a pair of veterans, Edefuan Ulofoshio and Alphonzo Tuputala. "Special teams is something I started playing at the University of Washington early in my career and is something I embrace and really fell in love with," Bruener told after being drafted in April. "It's something I have been able to do my whole career and excel at. I know that is something I am going to be able to bring to Pittsburgh for sure." Recently, the UW captain in 2024 was viewed as a potential cut candidate by Mark Kaboly, a long-time Steelers beat writer who covers the team for the Pat McAfee Show. The performance should give the rookie a boost of confidence as he continues to make a push to earn a roster spot when final cuts come down on August 26.

Crystal Palace Beats Liverpool in Penalty Shootout To Win The Community Shield

Community Shield Crystal Palace Beats Liverpool in Penalty Shootout To Win The Community Shield Published Aug. 10, 2025 2:35 p.m. ET share facebook x reddit link Crystal Palace pulled off another Wembley upset by beating Premier League champion Liverpool to lift the Community Shield on Sunday. After stunning Man. City in the FA Cup final in May, Palace defied the odds again — winning a penalty shootout 3-2 after the game ended in a 2-2 draw. "It's incredible," Palace goalkeeper Dean Henderson said. "We turned up today — they're the favorites, they've got unbelievable players, they're a great team. Two trophies in three months. That's incredible. "Let's find the next bit of history." Henderson saved two penalties in the shootout. "I love the big moments," he said. " I love that pressure moment." Mohamed Salah also fired over with Liverpool's first spot kick and Palace substitute Justin Devenny converted the winning penalty by blasting high into the corner to spark huge celebrations. Victory in the FA Cup had seen Palace win the first major trophy in its history, and it quickly followed that up with the Community Shield in the curtain-raising game for the new season in England's top flight. 'A big performance' Oliver Glasner's team twice had to come from behind after new Liverpool signings Hugo Ekitiké and Jeremie Frimpong were both on the scoresheet. Jean-Philippe Mateta and Ismaïla Sarr struck for Palace. ADVERTISEMENT "It was a big performance," said Palace coach Glasner. "We were almost the same level as Liverpool. I'm really proud of the team and how they played." Ekitiké — a $93.5 million signing from Eintracht Frankfurt — made a quick impression with his first goal for Liverpool coming after four minutes. The France forward showed a deft touch before turning on the edge of the box and sweeping a low shot into the far corner. Palace was back on level terms in the 17th from the penalty spot. Sarr was fouled by Virgil van Dijk, and Mateta sent Liverpool keeper Alisson the wrong way with his spot kick. Frimpong restored Liverpool's lead courtesy of a goal in the 21st. Carrying the ball on the right, the defender looked to lift a cross to the far post and watched as the ball spun wildly over the head of Henderson and over the line. Sarr leveled the game again in the 77th with a powerful finish from close range that beat Alisson via the inside of the post. It was his fourth goal in seven games against Liverpool. Straight to penalties With no extra time, the game went straight to penalties and Salah got Liverpool off to the worst start by lifting his effort high over the bar. Henderson then saved further spot kicks from Alexis Mac Allister and Harvey Elliott. Mateta and Sarr struck for Palace but, with Eberechi Eze having his shot saved and Borna Sosa hitting the bar, the shootout came down to the final penalty, which Devenny crashed home. Palace's day of destiny Last season's celebrations soon turned into a court battle for Palace after it was demoted from the second-tier Europa League to the third-tier UEFA Conference League. European soccer's governing body found Palace in breach of multi-club ownership regulations because of its ties to French club Lyon through American businessman John Textor. Palace lodged an appeal with the Court of Arbitration for Sport and a verdict is expected on Monday. Big spenders Fresh from winning a record-equaling 20th English league title last season, Liverpool has been active in the transfer market, spending $342 million on new signings Florian Wirtz, Ekitiké, Frimpong and Milos Kerkez. All four started at Wembley as Liverpool manager Arne Slot unveiled his new-look team. Ekitiké and Frimpong made scoring starts. Wirtz provided an assist but wasted a good chance in the second half when firing over. "Because we are Liverpool, the pressure is always on," Slot said. "Even if we bring no players in, or we bring 10 players in, if you wear the Liverpool shirt there is always pressure." Jota tribute disrupted A tribute to Diogo Jota and his brother Andre Silva, who died in a car accident last month, was marred by some fans as players stood for a moment's silence before kickoff. Loud voices could be heard in the crowd, which prompted some boos, and referee Chris Kavanagh then blew his whistle to signal the end of the tribute. Liverpool retired Jota's No. 20 jersey as a mark of respect, and fans applauded him as the clock struck 20 minutes during the game. Reporting by The Associated Press. England beat Scotland in EuroHockey opener

England's women opened their 2025 EuroHockey Championships campaign with a 3-0 win over Scotland on Sunday. Fiona Crackles gave England the lead in the 12th minute with a fine control and finish, before Lily Walker doubled the advantage early in the second quarter after meeting Tess Howard's backhand cross. Scotland rallied and controlled the third quarter but could not take advantage of their opportunities. Sabbie Heesh in the England goal smothered the first, before Anna Toman cleared a Sarah Jamieson effort off the goalline. 2015 winners England regained their composure and scored a third when Toman's corner sweep was deflected in by Lily Owsley. England will play 2023 runners-up Belgium in their next match on Monday at 17:00 BST in Monchengladbach, Germany. Meanwhile, James Gall scored as England's men drew 1-1 with Germany in their second match of the tournament, following a 5-0 thrashing of Poland on Friday.
