Jerry Kelly, Matt Gogel tied for lead at Boeing Classic

WASHINGTON: Jerry Kelly rang up six birdies in a row late in his opening round on Friday, and he shares the early lead with Matt Gogel at the Boeing Classic in Snoqualmie, Washington.
Kelly's 7-under-par 65 saw him roll in birdies at Nos. 12-17, including par-3s at Nos. 13 and 17 at The Club at Snoqualmie Ridge.
That run actually boosted him to 8 under, but he finished on a sour note at the par-5 18th when he went from bunker to bunker, reached the green in four and two-putted for his only bogey of the day.
"I didn't even realize I was on a pretty good birdie streak until I saw it on 17, that was fun," Kelly said. "I knew I was 8 under but didn't know I just made six in a row."
Kelly, 58, will try to win the Boeing Classic for the second time. It was the site of his first PGA Tour Champions victory in 2017; now he is searching for his 14th title overall.
"It's special because of this whole area, I love it," Kelly said. "When I can look around and forget about golf, that's a great thing for me. It's so beautiful up here that it can even make me forget about golf."
He and Gogel take a one-stroke lead over Paul Goydos into the weekend.
Gogel was one of the last players to finish and capped off a busy day with birdies at Nos. 8-9 to tie Kelly for the lead.
Gogel recorded nine birdies and two bogeys. He was 1 over through six holes before birdieing eight of his final 12 holes.
Goydos, meanwhile, turned in a bogey-free card, with five of his six birdies coming on the front nine.
"For nine holes I really couldn't have done much better. Everything was exactly what I was trying to do for the most part," Goydos said.
"Back nine I played solid. I didn't hit the putter quite as well. I hit it to two inches on 12 for my only birdie on the back."
Six players are tied for fourth at 5-under 67: Brandt Jobe, David Duval, Sweden's Freddie Jacobson, New Zealand's Steven Alker, Fiji's Vijay Singh and Northern Ireland's Darren Clarke.

Steve Allan makes Boeing Classic his third tour victory this year

SNOQUALMIE, (United States): Australian Steve Allan birdied the final hole to forge a one-stroke victory over Stewart Cink on Sunday at the Boeing Classic in Snoqualmie, Wash. Allan won for the third time this season and second time in last three starts on tour, shooting a bogey-free 7-under-par 65 to finish 15 under for the three-day tournament at The Club at Snoqualmie Ridge. He said he was "a little" surprised by three victories in 2025, following up wins at The Galleri Classics in March and the Dick's Open in July with Sunday's triumph. "I think I would have probably laughed if you told me I would have won three times," said Allan, 51, who joined the PGA Tour Champions in 2024 and was playing in his 39th event. "I definitely thought that I had a win in me, but I wouldn't have said three." His 5-foot birdie putt at the par-5 No. 18 was the difference, as Cink, who started the round with a three-stroke lead, found a bunker at 18 and settled for par at the final hole. Cink finished the day with a 2-under 70 and alone in second place at 14-under 202. "It's weird, not something I've ever done before," Allan said of watching Cink play the last hole with the title on the line. "I think it's really odd because you don't want to wish ill on someone but, obviously, you want to win the tournament. He's a great player so I fully expected him to make a birdie. "But you know what, at the end of the day if he got up here and made eagle and beat me, so be it," Allan continued. "I played well and had a great week." Allan carded birdies at Nos. 1, 8, 9, 12, 15, 16 and 18. Cink lost ground with bogeys at Nos. 6, 10 and 11 against birdies at Nos. 4, 8, 12, 15 and 16. "Well, I'm disappointed," Cink said. "I mean, I played well enough to win this, just made a couple mistakes and kind of put myself a little bit in a hole today. And I clawed back out, which I was really proud of. "I'm in the middle of the fairway on 18 and we — first of all, we got the situation wrong. We at the time thought that we were tied. It didn't really affect the shot plan, but then the wind changed on me in my shot. "If I had waited about 30 seconds to hit the shot, we would have played it differently. It didn't quite go far enough. I hit a little too far right." Ernie Els of South Africa (6-under 66 on Sunday) and Darren Clarke (66) of Northern Ireland tied for third at 13 under.

Stewart Cink heats up, takes 3-stroke lead at Boeing Classic

WASHINGTON: Stewart Cink shot a bogey-free 8-under-par 64 yesterday to take a three-shot lead going into the final round of the Boeing Classic in Snoqualmie, Washington. Cink moved up 10 spots from the first round on Friday with eight birdies at Nos. 6, 7, 8, 12, 14, 15, 16 and 18 to get to 12 under for the tournament at The Club at Snoqualmie Ridge. "If you stopped me after about No. 5 and said, 'Hey, what are the chances you're going to shoot 64 today?' I would have probably said you were crazy because nothing was happening at all," Cink, 52, said after the round. "I made a really good par save on the third hole, which is a tough par 4. I made a sloppy par on the first hole, which is an easy par 5. ... Nothing was happening. "But then, amazing how your momentum can flip with just one, really one putt, and a good putt on 6 from about 15 feet went in the center. It was kind of just the lid was off." Cink saved par at No. 17 after his tee shot landed about 80 feet from the pin and he got within 5 feet putting his second shot at the par-3 hole. "Yeah, that was a really big moment because you don't want to throw away a shot. It wasn't a horrible shot off the tee, just a little bit of a cut that didn't really cut and it just ended up down where it did," Cink said. "To get that ball close enough where the next putt was really makeable was a good way to just kind of keep the momentum going and keep the mindset in the right place." Steven Alker of New Zealand and Paul Goydos are tied for second at 9-under 135. Alker shot 4-under 68 yesterday, while Goydos carded 69. "I just kind of kept the round going," Alker said. "I played the par 5s poorly. You've got to get the par 5s out here today. I think I played them 1 over, so you can't do that tomorrow. But otherwise, most of the day just kept my nose clean and hit some good shots. Kind of felt like I left a little bit out there." Alker was working an unblemished round with birdies at Nos. 5, 6, 12, 14 and 17, then he bogeyed the par-5 No. 18. "Yeah, just unfortunate about 18," Alker said. "Going to make dinner taste a little bit not as good. But I'm right there, so I like the golf course, the game's feeling OK, so go get 'em tomorrow." First-round co-leaders Jerry Kelly and Matt Gogel each fired a 71 to move to 8 under and are tied for fourth with Australian Steve Allan (68). Kelly, 58, is trying to win the Boeing Classic for the second time. It was the site of his first PGA Tour Champions victory in 2017; now he's searching for his 14th title overall.
