Iran Film, Dakota Johnson, Stellan Skarsgard, Peter Sarsgaard, Vicky Krieps Honors Set for Karlovy Vary
Known as a popular stop on the film festival circuit for many stars, Karlovy Vary had previously already unveiled a visit from Michael Douglas this year.

The 12th and final film of this year's Karlovy Vary Crystal Globe main competition program is Iran's Bidad from director Soheil Beiraghi, which tells the story of young singer Seti who refuses to accept the fact that women in Iran are not allowed to perform in public. 'In defiance of her country's religious laws, she decides to sing in the street,' according to a synopsis. 'Her performances quickly gain in popularity, and Seti becomes a star for a young generation that no longer wants to be oppressed by the regime.'
Bidad was made as an independent production. 'Otherwise, it would never have been approved by the censors because of its critical tone,' KVIFF highlighted. 'Even so, director Soheil Beiraghi was investigated by the authorities during filming. It was necessary to withhold announcement of the film's inclusion in the festival's program until he and the members of his crew could safely travel out of Iran. A few days ago, the festival team was overjoyed to hear that they were on their way.'
While the stars have aligned for the world premiere of Bidad, the stars have also lined up to travel to the Czech festival.
Swedish film and theater actor Skarsgård, recipient of a Golden Globe award, will return to Karlovy Vary to be presented the Crystal Globe for Outstanding Artistic Contribution to World Cinema. He will also present his new film Sentimental Value, directed by Joachim Trier, which won the Grand Prix at this year's Cannes Film Festival.
At the KVIFF opening ceremony, the KVIFF President's Award will be presented to Krieps (Phantom Thread, Bergman Island), winner of a European Film Award for best actress for Marie Kreutzer's Corsage and 'one of today's exceptional acting talents,' said KVIFF organizers. The festival will be showing Anna Cazenave Cambet's film Love Me Tender, starring Krieps.
Also at the opening ceremony, the fest will present the KVIFF President's Award to Sarsgaard, who most recently starred in director Tim Fehlbaum's September 5. He has also wrapped production on Warner Bros.' The Bride!, which also stars Christian Bale and Jessie Buckley and is set for release later this year. Directed by his wife, Maggie Gyllenhaal, the film takes place in 1930s Chicago and puts a spin on the classic Frankenstein story. In Sarsgaard's honor, the festival will screen the journalism drama Shattered Glass (2003).
Also on the first weekend of KVIFF 2025, namely on Sunday, July 6, Johnson will be honored with the KVIFF President's Award and present her two latest films, Michael Angelo Covino's Splitsville and Celine Song's Materialists. 'Dakota Johnson continues her family's multigenerational acting tradition, as represented by her grandmother Tippy Hedren and both of her parents, award-winning Hollywood stars Melanie Griffith and Don Johnson,' fest organizers said. It should thus not come as a surprise that her film debut was at age 10, when she appeared in Crazy in Alabama (1999, directed by Antonio Banderas).'
In addition to this year's festival honorees, various other big names are also expected in Karlovy Vary. For example, the world premiere of Out of Love will be presented by the film's star, French actress Camille Cottin, whom audiences know from Call My Agent! and House of Gucci, among others. The international premiere of Rebuilding will be presented by Max Walker-Silverman, who returns to Karlovy Vary three years after presenting his feature film debut A Love Song there. Another American coming to town is Jay Duplass, who will attend the screening of his comedy The Baltimorons.
Mexican director Michel Franco returns to Karlovy Vary after just one year to screen his latest film Dreams, which stars Jessica Chastain and had its world premiere at this year's Berlinale. Also, Mstyslav Chernov, winner of a Pulitzer Prize and an Oscar for his 20 Days in Mariupol, will be in town to present his latest documentary, 2000 Metres to Andriivka. Finally, the historical drama Two Prosecutors, which had its world premiere in the main competition in Cannes, will be introduced by its director, Sergei Loznitsa.

Tons of young people are still sharing streaming passwords despite Hollywood's crackdown
If you're under 30, there's a good chance you're borrowing someone's streaming service password. A Pew survey shows many streaming moochers are hiding, despite crackdowns from Netflix and Disney. This means there are tons of freeloaders left for major media companies to target. Young people are avoiding the streaming password-sharing crackdown — so far. For Hollywood, that's both an annoyance and an opportunity. Just under half of American adults younger than 30 are borrowing a streaming service log-in from someone living outside of their house, a new survey from Pew Research Center shows. That 47% figure doesn't include those passwords within their house (or those who are lying). Password sharing is less rampant among older generations. Only 26% of 30- to 49-year-olds say they freeload for streamers. And 15% of those over 50 said they're using someone else's password to watch shows and movies. Netflix pioneered the clampdown on freeloaders to great success. After rolling out "paid sharing," it boasted a banner year of subscriber growth in 2024 that was capped off by its best-ever quarter. Media giants like Disney and Warner Bros. Discovery followed in Netflix's footsteps with Disney+ and HBO Max, though they're taking a gradual approach, likely to avoid generating mass outrage. Disney CEO Bob Iger said in early May that nudging moochers into paying has paid off by jumpstarting streaming subscriber growth. NBC may do the same with Peacock, based on warnings it sent freeloaders, but Paramount and Apple haven't hopped on board yet. Pew's survey suggests there's still much more room for streamers to crack down. And while some in the younger cohort could refuse to pay, either out of spite or because they don't watch enough to justify their own subscription, password sharers who do pay up could gravitate toward the cheaper ad-tier. That would be a win for streamers, considering that young people are the most valuable for advertisers, since their buying habits aren't set in stone. So, for those who are still streaming on someone else's account, beware — because Hollywood's password-sharing crackdown likely won't end anytime soon.

Scooter Braun and Justin Bieber have reportedly buried the hatchet. Two years after their decision to part ways professionally, the 'Baby' singer, 31, allegedly still owed the HYBE America CEO millions of dollars in connection with his cancelled 2022 Justice tour. However, the pair have 'squashed their issues and are in a good place' now, according to The Hollywood Reporter. A source told the outlet that Braun, 44, wanted to make sure this was done before stepping down as CEO so he could 'leave the company, and Justin, in a good position.' As for what's next for the music mogul, he is set to transition into a new role as senior advisor to HYBE founder Bang Si-Hyuk. Braun will also join the HYBE Board of Directors. 'Scooter has been an extraordinary partner, a visionary executive, and a true catalyst for cultural exchange,' Chairman Bang said in a statement. 'His contributions have been vital in establishing our ambitious presence in the U.S. market. I am deeply grateful for his leadership, his astute instincts and his unwavering passion for artists. We wish him immense success in his exciting next chapter and look forward to continuing our partnership in executing HYBE's global vision.' The news comes weeks after Braun spoke out on the current status of his relationship with the 'Peaches' artist during a June appearance on the Diary of a CEO podcast. 'I'm very proud of what we achieved and always rooting for him,' Braun explained, but noted that his friendship with Bieber was 'not the same' as it once was. 'We worked together for so long and we had such extreme success, and I think you get to a point as a man where you want to show the world you can do it on your own,' he continued. 'And I completely respect that. I think at this point, that's what he's doing. Myself and everyone from the old team is rooting for him.' For the time being, Braun said he would be a 'cheerleader from side' for Bieber, as he hopes for all the artists that he's worked with – which include Demi Lovato and Ariana Grande – to be successful in the industry. The music manager also clarified that he wasn't 'hurt' by Bieber's decision to part ways, adding that he'd felt the same way at the time. 'I wanted to find out who I was, I wanted to experiment with a different career,' he shared. 'We were both communicating enough with each other. The writing was on the wall.'
